I’m frustrated

Can not add device to existing place

I've added a place with a device (1st garage door opener) in it. But when I try to add a 2nd device (2nd garage door opener) to *that* place, it doesn't. It instead creates a second place.

But, interestingly enough, I have a 3rd garage with a different opener (the 888LM) that has a different process for adding than the first two (the first two connect to my wifi directly, the 888LM uses the 'learn' button), and it does add to an existing place.

So now I have 2 places, with 2 devices in one and the remaining device in the other.

How can I fix this??

Anthony - It sounds to me like you have two Wi-Fi garage door openers. These are the openers that you connect directly to your Wi-Fi. What you will need to do so that you only have one place on your app is you need to delete the second place. Once deleted, you will clear the Wi-Fi settings on your garage door opener (Press and hold the adjustment button, the button between the two arrows, until you hear three beeps).

Then when you choose to add a device, choose to place. It will then ask if you have a Wi-Fi garage door opener, choose no. And then you will be able to add the second Wi-Fi garage door opener to your existing place.

You wrote ....Then when you choose to add a device, choose to place. "It" will then ask if you have a Wi-Fi garage door opener....

What is "it"? I'm not seeing this prompt. The iphone app and website only wait on device to respond after learn button is pressed. Which of course, it won't. Please update your apps and website to accept MyQ serial numbers for adding devices to existing place as an option.

  • I have figured this out at least for my situation and perhaps this will help others.  I have two wifi garage door openers for my main and 3rd car.  Here are the steps I used to set them up so that they both show up in my "Home" place.
    1. Ensure your MyQ app does not have the place you intend to use for the garage door openers.
    2. Ensure both garage door openers are not on the Wifi as we need to set them up in reverse order of how you want them to show up in the MyQ app.  In my case I setup the 3rd car opener first.  To clear the Wifi just check the manual but it is holding the button between the up and down arrow buttons for 6 seconds until you hear the 3 beeps.
    3. Starting with the opener you want listed second in the app...press the learn button once and connect to the new "MyQ-xxx" Access Point. Set it up on your wifi according to the directions.
    4. Go to the MyQ app and add a new place and then add the new garage door opener by typing in the serial number.
    5. To add the second garage door opener to your existing place you should not have this on the wifi.  Hit the "plus" sign in the existing "place" (e.g., Home) and follow the directions in the app.  This will add the new garage door opened and it will be listed first in your app.
That should be it.  The first garage door opener will send the wifi configuration (SSID and password) to the second wifi opener over some proprietary RF interface or using the AP.  In any case that is the key to getting them setup at least in my case.

Hope this helps someone as this was not intuitive to me...the first thing I did after the install was put them both on Wifi and then try to add them to the MyQ app which is not the correct order.

I just easily did this (using an iPhone):
    1.  Set up the first garage door opener as per the instructions.
    2.  To add the 2nd opener do the following:
         a.  click the + icon in the top right corner of the screen
         b.  click "Add Device to Garage Door"
         c.  click "Garage Door Opener"
         d.  Click next on the following screen and push the learn button on the garage door opener motor unit.
         e.  The next screen asks for the Serial Number of the 2nd unit.  Type it in and click submit in the top right.

    Name the 2nd door.

It took me two attempts, but it connected and works perfectly

Do NOT have your smartphone connected to the WiFi signal sent out from the openers.  Have your phone connected to your home WiFi SSID.  The 2nd garage opener piggy-backs off the first one that is already connected.  You do not have to hit "program-->wifi setup" on the wall opener, or do anything else with the wall opener.

Unfortunately, you cannot order the doors in priority on the app or computer.  This needs to be enabled (i.e. my door I don't use much comes up first on my app, because I added it second, and I have to swipe over to the right to get to the main door.....I know, sounds idiotic, but that is something for them to fix, hopefully).

    Hope this helps

I tried the solutions listed here with no luck. My openers are both new Liftmaster 8550W. I can create 2 places and it will add perfectly just can't get the second one to add to the existing places.

  • I called support on this issue and they asked for the part number of the 8550 I was trying to add, then said they needed to send me a new logic board.  I asked them about the first 8550 (that I got one week ago) and they said it shouldn't need one (how would they know, they didn't check it's part #?).  Anyway, they are sending me a logic board.

Hmm.  This is the email i got from them yesterday:  "I understand you would like all three of your garage door openers under one place on the app. This is an issue that we are aware of and we are working diligently to fix it. At this time the only fix is to have the three separate places. I can send you a follow up email when the issue is resolved."  Doesn't work on web interface either.

I was able to add second door by adding another 'place' and naming it 'exactly the same as my existing place'.  It worked fine.

    • Thanks for this. I was stuck on the "spinning" page before I figured out how to add the second device. I would never have gotten there without this.
