Does the 819LMB MyQ Home Bridge replace (or do the same functions as) the 828LM Gateway?

As the title states, does the 819LMB MyQ Home Bridge replace (or do the same functions as) the 828LM Gateway?

I have 3 Liftmaster 8500 openers in operation that I am interested in accessing on a android device, just trying to figure out what I need to accomplish this.

Thanks!

  • DGMAX 99, let me touch base with the technical team and I'll be back with you shortly. Lauren

  • DGMAX99 I'm really not sure what Lauren is referring to or if I've misunderstood what you are trying to do.  As I read it, you have 3 8500 openers (as do I) and you are simply wishing to be able to control opening and closing those via an app on your phone.  If that is the case the internet gateway (828LM) will give you that ability, provided that the signal from it will reach the openers.  In my case the gateway is connected to my router in my home office which is directly above the attached garage.  It runs that opener as well as the two in the detached garage (probably about 30 feet away.  I also use it to control 2 WSLCEV Light controls one in each garage for the florescent overhead lights.

  • That is pretty much my goal. All three of my openers are mounted next to each other (3 bay garage). I have a router/wireless range extender not far from all of the openers. Does the 828LM Gateway need to be hard-wired to the router or does it have wireless capability (for the internet access)?

  • It is wired directly to your router.  Not sure but I think that the bridge will do the same thing as the gateway only wirelessly.  Your milage may vary, but like I said my gateway is probably a good 30 feet away from the two furthest doors maybe a bit more and it's sigmal has to pass through two walls one of the house and one of the detached garage to reach those two and has no issues at all.  I originally thought that the range might be an issue and was prepared to extend the antenna of the openers but I didn't have to do that, although I still might as the remotes in the cars don't seem to have the greatest range.

I like the idea of the gateway over the bridge in that there is one less wireless device, no chance of interference, and the gateway stays in the house away from weather and huge temp swings (the detached isn't heated)

  • The part about, "...the bridge will (may?) do the same thing as the gateway only wirelessly" was kinda my initial question. Although I am also not a big fan of "wireless" devices, (I hard-wire my stuff  whenever possible), I still wonder if the bridge will work as a wireless interface between the doors and my range extender/router.. My range extender/router has several ports not being used so I could easily just connect a Gateway up to it. BTW, thanks for the help!

  • Yes, I cable whenever possible.  Wireless is great but can also be a huge headache.  If there's anyway you can do a cabled run I'd go that route and the gateway.  Less wireless less headaches, especially when you are talking about net clients from a non network company.  I can tell you that the Gateway will require DHCP which I flipping HATE but most commodity gear requires it.  If it wasn't for low end tech that will only work with DHCP I'd never run DHCP.  What I end up doing is bumping up the DHCP scope by one when I add a new device that requires it and then configure a static DHCP entry for it.  That way you don't have just any old thing jumping on your network that you don't know about, and you know exactly what every IP on your network is from a device perspective.  You can also change DNS or Default Gateway options for a Static DHCP entry if you want to shut the kids off of the net for awhile (point there DNS to bogus addresses or their gateway to one of your LAN addresses that doesn't exist.  :D
