Liftmaster MyQ Gateway to Replace Craftsman/Assurelink Gateway

I have a Craftsman opener (Model 139.3043) with Assurelink. It says it is compatible with MyQ - and the wall control has a program setting to add MyQ devices. Recently I decided I wanted to be able to use some home automation applications that only accept MyQ garage door openers, not Assurelink. I registered for a Chamberlain MyQ account, but when I tried to add the Assurelink gateway to it, it told me it could not register that model. So I bought a Liftmaster Internet Gateway (Model 828LM) to replace the Assurelink gateway. I plugged in the Liftmaster gateway and went into my new MyQ account and registered the new gateway. Then I tried to "add device" (in this case, my Craftsman garage door opener) following the directions online and in the app. I press the Learn button on the opener when the app says to do so, but the app just times out and never finds the device after it says "waiting for device". Usually when I press the Learn button on the opener, the light blinks once right away and the lights go out. Then if I press the Learn button again, the Learn button stays solid. But either way, the app (or online) never finds the opener. Funny thing is, the new Liftmaster gateway shows a solid green and blue light, and I can still control the Craftsman opener remotely, and I still get the Craftsman Assurelink notifications when I open or close the garage door. So the Liftmaster gateway is working exactly like the Assurelink gateway it replaced, I just can't add my opener in the MyQ app. I feel like this should work. Am I doing something wrong?

    Jim,

Have you removed the garage door opener from the AssureLink account? The opener can only be added to one gateway at a time, so if it's attached to the AssureLink gateway, you will not be able to add it to the LiftMaster gateway. After you remove the opener from the AssureLink account, do a hard reset on the LiftMaster gateway. This will clear the blue light.

How to do a hard reset:
    1. Unplug the AC adapter from the gateway.
    2. With a safety pin or paper clip, press and hold the reset button on the side of the gateway.
    3. Plug the AC adapter back in while continuing to hold down the reset button until the yellow LED light blinks.

Let me know how it goes.

Ah ha, that was it. Thank you so much, Dawn. Once I removed the opener from the Assurelink account and hard reset the Liftmaster Gateway, the MyQ app found the garage door opener immediately. I never would have thought to do that (I was going to leave the old setup in place just in case the new setup failed.) Now I understand, however. Thank you again!

  • 2/12/16 UPDATE: See my "solution" below!

I'm in the same boat, but I didn't buy the LiftMaster gateway (828LM), rather the equivalent Chamberlain MyQ Internet Gateway from Home Depot. From everything I've read, the devices are identical. My GDO is the same: Craftsman Garage Door Opener Model 3043 (139.3043).

    - I've removed the AssureLink gateway from my Craftsman account
    - I reset the MyQ gateway by pushing in a pin while plugging it in and I wait until the yellow LED blinks
    - The only light that's on is the green one (blue is off)
    - I open the Liftmaster (or Chamberlain) app (they're both identical) and add the device
    - I enter the serial and it prompts me to press the learn button on the app.
    - As soon as I press Next, the lights on the gateway change to solid green and yellow
    - I run out to my garage, and press the big yellow learn button on my Craftsman
    - The app changes to "Waiting for device..."
    - I run back inside my home and the gateway now has a solid green and blue lights, indicating that it has learned a device.
    - The app still says "Waiting for device..." and eventually times out.

If I go through all the steps again, resetting the gateway, I get the same results. I've also tried using the website instead of the app and I get the same result (screen shot: http://take.ms/fkp0f). It just says "Waiting for device..." but at the same time (almost immediately) the steady blue light turns on my gateway as soon as I press the learn button (or as far as I can tell, running inside the house). After a minute or so, it times out and gives me the message "Adding your device timed out. Please try again later."

If I back up all the way in the app and go to "Manage Places" and delete "Home" (the place I added), then the blue light on the gateway turns off and leaves it in the same state as when I perform a reset.

No matter what I've tried, I cannot get this to work. Any ideas?

Side note, the OP/Jim said "It says it is compatible with MyQ - and the wall control has a program setting to add MyQ devices". I have the exact same model as him, but I don't see that anywhere, nor do I see any reference to MyQ on the wall panel -- unless I am missing something!

    UPDATE 2/21/16 (the next day!!)

I opened up the LiftMaster app and low and behold, my garage door device was there, but it wasn't working. So, I deleted the device, then re-added it by entering the serial number on the MyQ gateway, pressed the learn button and BAM! All is good now. I swear I went through these same steps 10 or more times yesterday. So, whatever happened to make it work today, I'll have no idea. But it did work without me having to jump through any hoops other than to wait a day #weird

  • I have a related question.  I purchased a Sears GDO (model 54918).  It did not come with the Assurelink Gateway.  I would like to use the MyQ Gateway instead because of its integration with the Wink app.  Based on your experiences, should I be able to use the MyQ gateway instead of the Assurelink?  It seems that a couple of you were able to accomplish this.  I won't have any issue with accounts that you have run into since I don't have an Assurelink account set up yet. I would appreciate any information you can share.

  • I own the craftsman Assure link opener. The mobile app is woefully behind the times and doesn't work with wink or anything else for IFTTT.  Can I just use the assure link gateway device and connect it to MYQ or chamberlain? I know you guys make the hardware... if so how do I go about setting it up.  For what its worth, I think most craftsman purchasers will likely migrate quickly if this is possible.

    • Mark I'd love to hear what your results are. I'm looking for ultimately voice control through Alexa or Siri. Also looking for possible IFTTT integration. Honestly the craftsman app is good but I specifally want apple Watch integration and possible Alexa.
    • OK, I added the MyQ Gateway to my Craftsman opener over the weekend.  Setup was quick and simple.  I created a MyQ account and was able to add the opener to my existing Wink hub/app.  The Wink app allows me to set up "robots" integrating other devices with the garage door status.  I have not attempted yet to access the garage door via Alexa.  That's next on my to-do list.  I'll report back on my results.
