MYQ Control Panel (888LM) dies and garage door opens with no warning
-
Got thru to Chamberlain at 800-528-5880. The customer service lady said that they are now aware that date code 2013 and 2014 888LM units can sometimes fail. They will replace the unit after the customer calls. They are sending me 2 units to replace my 5/13 and 7/13 888LM garage switches. Not pleased that they didn't reach out to me or others about this problem prior to it happening.
-
This is probably going bad. My garage door opener is also not working and as per customer service it's online and responding well. I have used this product for a year or more and I guess its done.
It's not reliable, it has sometimes sent incorrect notifications but it's not secure enough for me now.- view 1 more comment

Just happened to me last night. Without warning, the door opened by itself. The remote was not working anymore. The unit 888LM just died leaving the door opened. Hopefully I was home and not on a 1-month vacation. Trying to find a solution. I don't want to buy the same unit because based on reviews, it does not last and I don't want to find the door opened when getting home. (Manufactured: 02/14)
-
-
Same thing happened to me 4am last night. Set the garage alarm off. I went out there and tried to manually shut door. Nothing worked. I had to disengage door from opener motor and shut it manually. Went back to bed. Later that morning I diagnosed the 888lm unit is bad. Without it, shorting wires opens and closes door. With it I can't get it to do anything. This is a obvious large security risk. I was planning on being out of town for a few weeks and it would have been a disaster had it happened then. Waking up to an alarm T 4am is not cool either. Failing is one thing. But failing and opening the door as the last thing it does when it fails is a disaster.
-
-
I have had the same thing happen now on 2 of 3 doors. Definate flaw. Huge security risk. I have noticed the new wall units have a new date stamp on the backs. I hope they last? I am surprised I did not burn out a motor on the opener. I was away all weekend and it could have been going up and down for days. Not good Chaimberlain.

-
I had same problem. As a fix I disconnected the 888LM, and hung one of the wireless remote controls nearby instead. Works fine. I'll happily give up the timer-to-close feature to get rid of 888LM security nightmare. No need to hand more good $ to LiftMaster for another of these fatally-flawed wall controls.
In my case I was lucky to be home and also lucky that the garage door noise woke me up (at 3am), but it should never have failed like this. Check out the 1-star Amazon reviews/comments and you'll see it's a very common problem.
Note to Liftmaster: Triggering "door open" when the device dies is a horrible design choice. Redesign it, test the heck out of it to verify the fix, and be sure to tell us at-risk 888LM owners when the new model is available.-
Good news, bad news. Liftmaster rep called me and went out of her way to make me a happy customer by sending 2 replacement control panels - a replacement 888LM dated 11/17 and also a 378LM. Arrived a few days later. The 378LM was offered since (here’s the bad news) the rep couldn’t guarantee the new 888LM wouldn’t fail the same way as the old one (ie: door open).
So I connected the 888LM long enough to get the 378LM paired to my 3800PLD motor unit and wireless garage light. The 378LM is a simple battery-powered wireless 3-button control panel. It doesn’t have the nice extras that I’d purchased the 888LM for (timer-to-close, and MyQ app compatibility) but using the 888LM would have left me losing sleep knowing a repeat failure might happen again.
Maybe they've fixed the 888LM flaw but mine is staying disconnected in its box until LiftMaster openly recalls/replaces all old units with an independently-verified fix or until 4-5 years go by with zero reported failures of the newer units.
The main selling point of the 888LM was peace of mind knowing the door would automatically close (and certainly not to randomly open by itself), unfortunately there’s nothing yet that gives me confidence to trust the replacement. Until then I’m going with the 378LM. Still, thanks LiftMaster for sending both units. -

I purchased this for the auto close feature. I accidentally left my garage door open one night and was robbed, all my power tools and a bicycle. Now last night my 888LM failed and the garage door opened. Fortunately I was not robbed this time, but am very disappointed in this design flaw.
-
-
My 888LM died the other day. It appears the two supercapacitors leaking(1uf 2.7v). I did some reading in this forum in search of known issues and i could not believe, that some people claiming the garage door opens by itself until it happened to my garage door. It had removed the 888LM and the wires were not connected to anything. I woaked up with buzzing of my wireless sensor indicating that the garage door is open. MYQ any solutions short of going to someone else?

Chuck, not to start a flame war here, but patel99p already stated very clearly in the last sentence how you can help him out (and all the rest of us as well)...
"Recall and replacement with fixed switch should be required."
What's with you and LiftMaster acting powerless to fix this? -
-
-
-
I have 3 of these and 1 died last night, kept opening and closing the door. I got an alert from my nest thermostat that my garage was critically cold ( it was 20*F out last night). This is a big concern for me since I have a lot of plumbing in my garage that could freeze. I loved these up until now, does anyone know if the new ones have been fixed? Or will I just be in for future failures if I replace it? Thinking I should disconnect the other 2 now to be safe.
I've had them for 3 years now.
If a support agent want to contact me they are welcome to. -
-
I felt the same way. I really like the product. Just can’t trust the switch anymore. I want a known fixed 888lm date code 2017. I actually want 2. Liftmaster should send a recall to all known users and replace with a properly tested product that will fail safe with the garage not opening and closing repeatedly. By the way I tried calling chamberlain all day Saturday with no luck getting a hold of tech. Another bad part about this situation is that I have to tell about 6 people I told to buy this system to uninstall it and go back to a standard switch.
-
-
I did the same today, called everyone I knew with one and told them about the issue. This doesn't seem like an if it will fail, but rather when it will fail.
-
-
Wow...I can’t believe the number of people who are having this problem.
Today, I had a failure in one of the two 888LM ‘s in my garage. The door opened on failure of the 888LM wall control unit, leaving my home, contents, and family in serious jeopardy. Not serious...in danger.
What kind of crazy default is this unit programmed for? Opening the door upon failure? Can they not see a problem here?
I can see where Chamberlain is not admitting to selling tens of thousands of these units with a serious inherent problem, as they know a class action liability lawsuit that they would face would cost them tens of millions of dollars. I will be calling them tomorrow. -

Our garage door opener just started doing this recently. I didn't have the notifications set on my phone the first time it happened (I actually thought we just left the door open by mistake). We don't have the auto timer set. This morning, I looked at my phone and had a notification that the door was opened at 7:15am (no one had left the house). Luckily, I caught it at 7:35am and went and shut it. About 30 minutes ago, same thing happened. I shouldn't have to be worried about my garage door opening in the middle of the night on its own.

Just last week one of my garage doors opened in middle of night. I heard it and went in garage to find 888lm control randomly beebing. After half hour of trouble shooting, I removed the unit and shorted the control wires to close the 10’ tall door. I have two of these controllers with manufacturing date of 03/14. How do I get replacements that have this design defect corrected and under warranty?

I had this problem. My vendor came out and replaced the faulty 888LM under warranty. However, I have FOUR of these things.
Is there some kind of recall program for the others? I wasn't home the last time this happened, and the door was open for hours because my neighbor (who saw it and called me) was not physically able to disconnect the opener and pull the door shut (they are big doors.) I'm worried about it happening again. -
-
Stian, thank you for sharing. We will provide more details as soon as we accurately diagnose what's happening.

I have 3 888LM controllers connected to MyQ. Over the last 3-4 years, I have replaced all three because the garage doors just start randomly going up and down. In the middle of the night, when I am at work, whenever. It’s really unnerving. I just had another one go bad the other night. As we head into another winter in Wisconsin I am thinking I need to get rid of the MyQ system all together or risk freezing my insulated heated garage and the water lines in it. There is also the problem of theft.
Of all the problems for a garage door opener to have, randomly opening seems like the worst one possible. As I now have had 4 controllers fail, doing the same thing over several years, I have to assume the devices are fatally flawed somehow. Not sure getting a new one will do any good unless LM says they have actually fixed something. For now I just open the one door with the two wires. Just touch them together and it opens. Not high tech, but safe. LM do you have any ideas?
By the way, the MQapp will not tell you that the door is opening and closing when the 888LM fails and starts cycling the door up and down randomly. It seems to be entirely disconnected from the system by that point. The app just says the door is closed, even though the door is actually not closed. So they way you find out is to come home to your door open or wake up and see it open when you enter the garage. Nice.
Does anyone know of an alternate wall controller system/app that can be used with regular (two wire control) LM openers?-

I called yesterday to complain that our garage door was open for a day and a half while we were out of town. We also have the 888lm model. We have our door set to close after one minute and we receive notifications on our app when it opens and closes. Funny thing is, it opened at 4pm Christmas Day, about 3 hours after we left town. We didn’t receive any notifications of it opening. It was wide open for the entire world for a day and a half. I decided yesterday to check the app because he hadn’t been getting any notifications while we were out of town which was weird because normally we get them several times a day. It showed that our door had been open for a day and a half. Not sure why we didn’t get any notifications! Lucky for me, I was able to shut it from my phone and have a friend come over to check to make sure we hadn’t been robbed. When I called, the gal on the phone didn’t seem to concerned even though I explained everything in detail. She told me she was going to email me some instructions on how to check to see if there is a short somewhere. I have yet to receive those instructions and this was 24 hours ago. We are not happy people. Something needs to be done about this problem!

Recieved my replacement buttons today, unfortunately they still use the same brand of capacitors. Maybe they've fixed the defect, but it doesn’t instill confidence. Manufacturing date of 11/17. I’ll still install them since chamberlain was nice enough to send them, but i’ll also be installing additional door sensors along with them.
Also, a thank you is due to the customer service staff, they’ve been outstanding.-

I’m about to purchase an 8500 because it’s the only style that will work for my garage, but these reviews have me wary. Has there been any long term fix for this??
-
-
Damean, the issues you're seeing with the 888LM are specific to a small number of units and we're actively addressing them. You can be confident in the 8500. Lauren

Hello Lauren,
First of all thanks for representing LiftMaster in such a professional manner, we all appreciate the quick responses.
Have you guys narrowed the failures down to specific manufacture dates of the 888LM? I have two which were purchased at the same time (in 2016); one has already failed, and I expect the other will go at any moment now...what criteria have you used to determine that it is a "small number" of units? Thanks in advance. -

I just had this very thing happen to me just 2 days after leaving the state on vacation. Luckily I have an attentive neighbor who keeps on eye on the neighborhood otherwise my garage would be wide open for 10 days.
What is very strange is one failed 2 days ago that opened the door, my neighbor clipped the wires and manually closed the door. Last night the other unit failed blaring its alarm from 3am until my neighbor again clipped those wires.
Why 2 failures in 48 hours, power surge? Is there a line conditioner that i could install for the door opener?- view 2 more comments

We have been having issues with ours for over a month now. We have our timer set to shut ours after one minute in case it opens on its own. We also have notifications set so we know when it’s opening and closing. We left town Christmas Day and shut the door. Apparently it opened about 3 hours after we left, didn’t shut after a minute and we didn’t get any notifications!! It has been open for almost 2 days!! I just shut it from my app. I just happened to go look at the history in the myq app because I thought it was interesting that we hadn’t received any notifications. This problem needs to be fixed!

I think I speak for many of us when I say we would really like to see an official statement from Liftmaster that:
1) Admits there is an issue
2) States which revision of the 888LM definitively fixes the issue
3) Offers a recall program for customers to get those new units
I see a lot of people being directed to customer support, and I will be calling in myself. But I don't want to go swap all my control panels only to find that the new ones are also defective. Currently, I have no reassurance that the problem has been found and fixed, and I have stopped recommending LiftMaster to family and friends as a result.
Lauren, Chuck, any chance you guys can escalate this up far enough to get some executive to take action?-
These are canned responses that show the company doesn't care until they get sued for someone getting robbed or worse due to this know security flaw. The engineering team that developed this idiotic design should be looking to correct it instead of the Lift master mailing out more of these garbage units as a temporary fix. I'm telling everyone I to stay away from Liftmaster at this point.

I was watching TV a few nights ago after putting the kids to bed and heard my garage door freaking out. Went out to the garage and one of the two doors was opening, closing, opening repeatedly. The wall controller was blinking and was unresponsive. Came here looking for answers and it looks like I found the problem, the 888LM went bad. I figured it must be the case because after pulling it from the wall and putting the old "dumb" switch back up it was fine. Is there a fix for this problem? Is my other switch far behind and going to leave my garage door open? This is a security problem for sure!

Agreed - there seems to be a huge disconnect between the phone agents and the online (here and email) support group.
And I wish they would acknowledge that this is a real issue with the LM888 and provide formal notifications to owners. It's a little scary and frustrating to come home to an open garage door (twice, in my case). -

I have now had two of the 888LM's go bad. This one has a 2014 date on the back. I don't know if it is an older unit that has problems but This is so frustrating. Chamberlain was great and sent out a replacement the first time, but I don't know why this is an ongoing issue. Is there a different wall controller that I can use? These units seem to have an inherent flaw.

For weeks I've been scratching my head trying to figure out why my garage door is opening. Finally decided to google it only to find TONS of postings and complaints about the 888LM failing and randomly opening the door. I had to create a open door alert to be notified when it opens so I can close it remotely. Works during the day but not exactly a great solution at night! Like others I have a garage full of tools and other things plus of course you can get into my house from the garage. Unbelievable to have a failure that causes the garage door to open. Now that I know the reason why it's opening I'm removing my 888lm immediately. I guess i'll just short the wires when i need to open and close my door.....

I have 6 garage door units that operate off of the 888LM wall switch. 3 units in California and 3 in Arizona. I have made the trip from Arizona back to California in the middle of the night because of an open garage door, sounding alarm and police response. This past week I got the alarm call in California that our Arizona home has an open garage door issue. Luckily we had friends in Arizona to go to our home and check out the situation, which by now I already knew what was going on. Had them disconnect the garage door and shut it manually. Reset alarm and all was good. I have now gone to killing the AC to the openers when we are out of town. It is hard to believe that there is still not a fix for this situation. Lots of customer service responses on these pages, but no fix
