I installed MyQ on our Craftsman garage opener. After repeated attemts to sync it finally worked and is working well, except for the fact that it opens the garage door randomly!! We have had that for 2 nights in a row and today I checked in the morning after coming to work and it showed that the door had been open for 1 hr!!!
Any solution? This is a real security issue.

I have wrestled with this problem for 3 months now. Opens at least once a day. This week it opened 8 times. I gave up and unplugged it. To the chamberlain support guy, I reset my garage codes three times already. You guys should update the mobile app so that when it logs opens and closes it also logs the source of the open whether initiated by myQ or not. My suspicion is that the myQ service is malfunctioning and just like crosstalk on the phone, I sometimes get someone else's open command. I will report back in 2 weeks. If I don't have any random opens in this period its 100% a myQ problem. Reason for this suspicion is that my garage has not opened randomly even once for 4 yrs prior to installing MYQ

I apologize that you are having a problem with your door opening on it's own. The symptom that you have described is called "Phantom Operation". There are a few things that can cause this type of problem. The most common cause is caused by a neighbor's remote being inadvertently programmed to your opener.
I believe that when you went tried to sync the opener to your MyQ Garage that someone in your neighborhood activated their garage by their remote and it programmed to your opener. To fix this issue you will need to clear the memory of your opener. Keep in mind once you clear the memory of your opener you will need to reprogram any remotes and keyless entries you may have. You will also have to reprogram the MyQ Garage.
To clear the memory of your opener:
1. Press and hold the learn button on your Craftsman opener until the LED light turns off. (approximately 6 seconds)
To program your remote:
1. Press and release learn button on the motor unit like a door bell
2. Within 30 seconds, hold down the button on your remote that you wish to program
3. Release the remote button when the motor unit light blinks or two clicks are heard
4. Test by pressing the programmed button
To program your keyless entry:
1. Press and release learn button on the motor unit like a door bell
2. Within 30 seconds, enter 4 digit pin number into the keypad and press and hold Enter
3. Release Enter button when the motor unit light blinks or two clicks are heard
4. Wait until the lights on the keypad turn off, then test by pressing the 4 digit pin and then Enter
Let me know if you need any other assistance. You can email me at MyQCommunity@LiftMaster.com

This is interesting. I also have a Craftsman garage door opener and had the same issue in setup and now my garage door is opening on it's own. I will try the reprogramming but it is quite the coincidence.

Yea, mine sits unplugged and unused because of this issue. You really can't even troubleshoot it with no logs.

I fully agree that the "history" tab is weak. It should have a verbose setting to show all activity. Also, the gigantic house logo that becomes a potential "pocket dial" for opening the door should be removed.

Just to let you know I reprogrammed all my devices in the opener according to the instructions and all is well. Thanks Dawn.

I have a similar problem but mine is bizarre, almost spooky. I have the MyQ opener with battery backup and have had it for about a year now. Starting today the garage starting opening and closing randomly. The spooky part is, when I slam the door of my car that's inside the garage, the garage door opens (or closes). I was able to reproduce it every time by slamming the door in my car or even my wife's car which is right next to my car. I unplugged the garage door and plugged it back again after a brief period. After that it stopped doing it for sometime but now it again has started this phantom open/close. How can sound of the car door slamming cause the garage door to open/close - there is no sound sensor in this right? Please let me know what could be going wrong?
Thanks in advance! -

Or is it happening from the vibration? In any case what can i do now? It has become so bad that I have now unplugged the power to the garage door opener!

Dawn, I contacted Chamberlain customer service and they have shipped a logic board as mine is still under warranty. But meanwhile, I had a couple of remote controls in my garage in a shelf and just to check if they are acting as a vibration sensor I moved them about 3-4 days ago. After that I haven't had the phantom operation even once! So it may be the remotes being too sensitive to vibrations and triggering the open/close. I am going to wait for 2-3 days more just to confirm if this is the cause. Thanks for your reply.

Son le - I apologize that you are having a problem with your door opening on its own. When someone else's remote is programmed into your opener, it doesn't stop working for their opener. If clearing the memory does not take care of your issue, there could be other issues. Here is more information on phantom operation.
Answer Title: Why does my garage door opener activate on its own?

I stand corrected. Thought myChamberlain was culprit of same problem and found that one of my neighbors somehow programmed my garage opener. So it does happen. I will keep myQ

Hi, i have the famous ''PHANTOM OPEATION'' problem ! My door opener is installed since 3-4 years, and the problem start 2 weeks ago.The door open every day at about 2pm and 2 am. This time i put the remote desactivation mode and it dont solve the problem. If it's the neighbor's remote problem, the remote desactivtion will cancel they remote, it cancel mine! It's a LIftmaster 3800pld, 07/30/12

Yes, we need the logs! . I started having phantom opening issues since I installed this unit. Yesterday I totally cleared out all codes (hold the button for six seconds). Reprogrammed the myq, a car, and two other conventional remotes. Just one hour ago we're all having breakfast and the door just opens! Chamberlain, please, give us the logs! I'd also make a unique ID for each web enabled device, such as "door opened using Husband's iPhone" or " wife's iPhone" etc.

Also, how secure are the web servers? Could someone be hacking our accounts and opening that way?

We had a Liftmaster 8550 installed. The battery backup did not work on the first model. The second model has now opened on its own twice. I always make sure that the door is fully down when I leave each morning. I have come home to find the door partially open in the evening. It doesn't make sense that it is not fully open.

Same problem happen to my neighbor's garage. The problem was faulty wall switch (882LM).. Nothing wrong with the garage motor or the logic board. Try to disconnect the wall switch and see if that solve the problem. Good luck to all :)

I fixed mine. I bought the new Ryobi door opener. It works perfect and in a year have never had the door open on its own.
-
Thanks for the tip. Will definitely remove defective LiftMaster and get a new Ryobi door opener!

John, if you're having issues with your LiftMaster opener, I'd like to try to help solve it. Lauren

This looks like a very serious common problem that needs to be fixed fast

It wouldn't close on the 10 minute timer stayed open for over an hour

Having security camera that stores to cloud I will be informing insurance so they can recover from liftmaster for losses and damages.

I am sure that will work out for you. This thread is 2 years old.

I have had MyQ for a couple of years without issue and this issue started to happen during random times. I don't believe it's a neighbor because I had my wall control on "lock " status. I think I found the solution- I removed the wall control panel and noticed the soldered leads that make contact with the wire and screw were worn down. So I then decided to add more soldered metal in order for the wires to make contact.
So far I haven't gotten any more phantom operationas.
I also went ahead and ordered another 888lm unit in case the wall unit starts actiong up again.
Attached is photo of how the unit would open and close with the wall unit flashing both red and yellow lights -

cheers.
Like a few have said before, my setup worked for about a year and magically with no changes on my opener or MyQ setup, 1 of my 2 doors is opening randomly on it's own.
