Need to create rule to notify if garage door left open at night

Hi, I would like to have a rule for my Liftmaster 8550W opener that notifies me if the door is left open after 9:00pm and before 6:00am. I read that rules like that need to be broken into two parts, so I created one from 9:00-11:59pm and one from 12:00-6:00am.

The first rule I created is:
Garage door is open
For longer than...10 minutes
Only from 9:00pm to 11:59 pm
On these days....M, T, W, Th, F, Sa, Su
By sending me a...push notification
Rule enabled...on

The problem is, this doesn't work. I think it will only work if the door is in the closed position and then is opened after 9:00pm. So if the door has been open since 5:00pm, the rule doesn't work. I would think the rule would "fire" at 9:10pm in that scenario, but it doesn't seem to work like that.

I have the basic push notification when the door is opened or closed any time of day, and that works fine.

Is there a way to do what I want?

Thanks,
Jim

  • The need to be alerted when a garage door is not in the closed position (especially late evening) is so fundamental to security that surely Liftmaster will address this shortcoming.

Every MyQ Liftmaster owner would benefit by having available a notification like this.   And surely the software update to do this would not be rocket science.

Excellent suggestion Jim.  I second your motion!

    All in favor say 'Aye'!

A thunderous "AYE" is heard from coast to coast and around the world!   Even non-owners are joining the enthusiasm.  They too may benefit if this update comes to fruition.

The 'Ayes' have it.  Motion approved.  :)

Ball is in your court Liftmaster.

The thing is, the alerts SHOULD work the way I described in my first post. If it's useful to know that the garage door has been open for 10 minutes any time after 9:00pm, it doesn't make any sense for there to be a distinction of whether somebody first opened the door at 5:00pm or 9:00pm. In either case, the alert should occur at 9:10pm. This is an EASY fix for Liftmaster. Incredibly easy.

Knowing that I left the garage door open from earlier in the evening could be the difference between my kid's bike getting stolen or not. Come on Liftmaster, please make this SIMPLE change to your app. Thanks!

I've been waiting for this function along time like many others. Not sure why they don't address .

  • This is the main reason I bought MyQ...It is presented as having this functionality.  My family has a bad habit of leaving the garage door open at night.

  • I just recently launched a new cloud automation platform that supports MyQ enabled garage doors.  Here are some highlights:
    • Automatically closes your MyQ enabled garage door(s) at night (whatever time you specify)
    • Receive text alerts if you're garage door has been left opened.
    • Check, open, or close your garage doors by sending a simple text/sms message from your phone - no app required!
    • Multi-user access:  Allow your babysitter, house cleaner, mother-in-law, etc. access to open your garage door via text message.

That all sounds nice, but I think Liftmaster can and should provide most of the functionality in its app, which won't cost me a monthly service fee.

I agree with you Jim... but I am tired of waiting for Liftmaster (and other device companies) to provide the functionality I and many others want to automate our homes/businesses.  My service also provides a simple interface that my mom/grandparents can use (a.k.a. text messages) as well as automated, time-based capabilities (e.g. close any open garage door at midnight).

Is Liftmaster actually monitoring this discussion?  I have yet to see ANY response from them - either to acknowledge this as a worthwhile feature - or to tell us that they cannot see a way forward on this.  As a 40 year veteran systems analyst/programmer I feel quite confident that if the right person at Liftmaster was tasked with getting this done that it would come available within days.  It isn't rocket science...

VERY uncharacteristic of a company that cherishes it's customer relations to just ignore such a simple and straight forward request.   Come on Liftmaster.  At least acknowledge that you heard us.

  • After buying the myq system thinking it could do all they things they say only to find out it cant I'm wondering if a lawsuit would wake them up. it seems like a simple request to have it alert you if its open after a certain time of day rather than a set amount of time, yet they ignore us. Samsung had an app that would do it but chamberlin told them to stop using it because it was messing up their system, which is code for we dont have the server resources to handle all the traffic it was creating. They could buy more servers/space and upgrade their software but people are already buying the units so why bother, the false advertising is making them money and they dont have to spend a dime :(
