New Internet Gateway won't connect to Internet - persistent flashing green lights

Purchased the Internet Gateway this week, but it doesn't seem to connect to the Internet.

We have a Linksys router connected to our cable modem. I have tried several different Ethernet cables and verified all the ports work on our router. Have tried this over several days, and our internet connection has been solid the whole time. I have power cycled the gateway numerous times, get the 4 flashes of blue and green... Have also done a soft reset using the gateway's reset button and even connected the gateway directly to our cable modem, but no matter what, the green light just continues flashing. Our router shows that the gateway is connected. Adding the gateway on myliftmaster.com obviously returns an error. Is this a faulty gateway or is there anything else to try?

    Tyson,

    What kind of router and modem are you using? Also, you can try doing a hard reset on the gateway.

    1. Unplug the AC adapter from the gateway.
    2. With a safety pin or paper clip, press and hold the reset button on the side of the gateway.
    3. Plug the AC adapter back in while continuing to hold down the reset button until the yellow LED light blinks.

  • Thank you, Dawn. I tried your steps, the yellow LED light blinked but ultimately the green light just came back on blinking (never going solid).

    My router is: Linksys WRT160N, Firmware Version: v3.0.03 The modem is a cable modem, Terayon TJ-715.

    Thanks for your help and support!

    Something similar happened to me when connecting myQ Garage. When I connected to the myQ with Bluetooth My iPhone was simutaniously connected to a 5GHz Wireless Access Point. The myQ copied the wifi settings from my phone and tried to use the same wifi connection credentials as my iPhone - 5GHz. myQ was not able to use the 5GHz network.

    I "downgraded" my wifi connection on my iPhone to the 2.4GHz radio in the same router - connected to the myQ with Bluetooth- myQ successfully copied the wifi credentials for the 2.4GHz network and was able to connect to the internet.

    I'm not sure if this would apply to the internet gateway as well. -John

  • I have the same problem with Netgear R7000 router.. I have followed all the steps for trouble shooting plus reset router and modem and followed the setup and troubleshooting steps again.
    • Brown-eyed girl. I believe I have that same router and also had issues. It seems I fixed my problem by access the router. Look on the bottom of your router and you should see text that is a web link address like "www.routerlogin.net"; and a user name and password to use. Once inside your router settings go to LAN setup and make sure RIP direction is "both" and version 1 should do the trick. Otherwise try 2.

      Good luck!

    I'm so fed up with my new MyQ device.  I've found the MAC address of it, assigned it a static IP address, performed the port forwarding steps for both Port 80 and Port 2165 (Private and Public, both TCP and UDP ports for this static address), and still all I get is a blinking green light.  All of this is in my Apple Time Capsule.  I'm so frustrated and especially irritated that there isn't a Tier 2 support group to call into.  I'm sending this out in a final attempt to get my problem solved.  It shouldn't be this tough.  I understand networking fairly well and still can't get this to work; how in the world can your company expect the average garage door installer to ever get these to work?

    • I am having the same issues.  I was a network admin so I know a few things.  tried all steps I have seen posted and it wont connect.  I have narrowed the issue to something between my computer and the gateway because when my computer is off the gateway connects.  I have done static IPs etc and nothing will make it work. The gateway is connected directly to the cable modem so the firewall on my computer should have nothing to do with it but I shut it down anyway and still won't connect.  I don't have much installed on the computer except Digital Watchdog software for my security cameras.   I have sent an email and need advanced help not tier one.
    • As a last resort I uninstalled the DIgital Watchdog server software off my computer and the gateway now connects.  there is a conflict between the Digital Watchdog server software and the gateway.  The quest goes on....

  • I am having the same problem. I have also contacted the ISP to verify if any traffic was being blocked at the modem. No problems there, so it is either the device itself or a setting in the router. I get the continuous blinking light and have tried everything. How did they determine that your device was faulty? Thanks.

      SamM. - We need to verify that port 8883 is set to TCP and allows inbound and outbound traffic. Can you verify that it is set to TCP? Also, the other two ports to look at are UDP port 2165 and TCP port 80.

  • Folks, the same thing was happening to me when directly plugged into my router, which is an Asus flashed with the Tomato operating system.

    To troubleshoot...

    - I executed all the steps Liftmaster phone support instructed me to do. Unfortunately, to no avail. I took the matter into my own computer science and software engineering hands.

    - I connected the gateway to a Netgear Universal WiFi adapter, which was wirelessly connected to my home network. The gateway then connected to the Internet for the first time.

    - I then "learned" both MyQ Control Panels (Model 888LM) to the gateway. I have two control panels because I have two garage doors that I independently operate.

    - I then unpluggd the gateway from the Netgear Universal wifi adapter and plugged it back into the router directly.

    - After doing so, the gateway connected to the Internet again (this time connected directly to my Asus router) and remained "learned" to both of the MyQ Control Panels (Model 888LM) mentioned two steps above.

    - The gateway has been working flawlessly ever since.

    If you have some sort of wifi adapter available, it's worth a shot to try the steps above. They worked for me.

    Buona Fortuna!

    All,

    I just purchased a Chamberlain Internet Gateway yesterday and had the same blinking green light issue that is littered over several forums.  As I became more frustrated making sure all ports described here were open in both directions of my firewall (I certainly wasn't going to buy into this compatible/non-compatible router bit), I finally gave up for the night and decided to sleep on it.

    I'm quite secure about my networks at home (yes, I have several) but this morning decided I would give this device's IP address free reign on ports, inbound and outbound, on my firewall.  And it worked!  After registering the device with the MyQ app successfully, I set the rules back as described here (and then some) and the gateway has maintained it's connection for two hours now. My Liftmaster garage door is now connected and working through the app.

    Firewall rules to get the gateway to connect to Internet:

    Policy=Allow Protocol=TCP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=Any
    Policy=Allow Protocol=UDP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=Any

    Once the Gateway connected to the Internet and registered with the MyQ app, revised rules are:

    Policy=Allow Protocol=TCP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=80
    Policy=Allow Protocol=TCP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=8883
    Policy=Allow Protocol=TCP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=2165
    Policy=Allow Protocol=UDP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=53
    Policy=Allow Protocol=UDP Source IP=<IP Address of CIG> Source port=Any Destination=Any Destination port=2165

    Chamberlain/Liftmaster support:  while some might think this is a very simple device, we really should take security more seriously.  Rather than using unencrypted port 80 for cloud connectivity consider port 443 instead, at a minimum.  At least that will provide more security as I suspect that most people will just be connecting these devices directly on their home network.  Just my $.02.

  • I had similar issues to what others reported: blinking green light, after plugging the gateway into a switch on my home network. Curious what was going on, I ran a packet capture from my router, to see why the device was failing to get an internet connection. I could see very quickly that the issue was the 828LM was failing to resolve DNS for connect1.myqdevice.com (and then connect.myqdevice.com), at which point it just tries connecting to some non-existent host (6.11.0.0) on port 8883.

    My router, like probably many other people's routers, is set to handle all DNS requests by default, and if it doesn't know the answer, it forwards the DNS request to my ISP's DNS server (that's the gateway DNS, for those who know what I'm talking about). I didn't look closely at the DNS request being sent by the Liftmaster 828LM, but my guess is it's not totally well formed, so some DNS servers would reject it. That probably explains why Liftmaster maintains a lengthy list of routers which are "incompatible" with the 828LM. If you have the ability to, just change your DNS and DNS 2 settings to some well-known DNS server, like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). I tried this on my router, rebooted the 828LM, and lo and behold, it was able to resolve DNS for the myqdevice hostnames, and I got solid green light within a few seconds. Worth a try, if you have the ability to customize the DNS servers your router provides to DHCP clients.

    Also of interest, it doesn't look like any port forwarding needs to be setup, which is an unnecessary security risk. After analyzing the traffic of the 828LM on startup and operation, it only needs to make outgoing TCP connections on port 8883, and never connects to anything on port 2165 (maybe other MyQ devices do, or it only does it rarely). If forwarding port 8883 to the device magically makes it start working, you more likely have a NAT issue.

    • Same here.  Liftmaster's phone support people need to note this!!!  No firewall holes are needed.  Rather than change the DNS for the whole network, I'm using static DHCP assignment for the 828LM, so I set the primary DNS for this one assignment to one that could resolve the two FQDN's that Jason listed.  One can test this by using nslookup and making sure the server names resolve to ip's.
    • Jason absolutely nailed it here. I am fairly savvy IT Server dude and I lost an hour to troubleshooting until I found this thread. I'm a Time Warner-Spectrum ISP hostage and apparently their default DNS settings did not like the MyQ DNS traffic. My router is a Linksys E2500 and all I had to do was alter my DNS1 to 8.8.8.8 and DNS2 to 8.8.4.4 while setting DNS3 to the TWC-Spectrum address. So far so good and thank you to User260510 as well.  As previously stated this device and configuration should not require ANYONE to to have to configure DNS to use.  I will give Chamberlin - Liftmaster a few weeks before I post my honest review of my purchase with Amazon.

  • I have the same problem with the Liftmaster 828LM Internet Gateway. The device is connected to a Ubiquiti Unifi switch and there is a SonicWALL TZ 500 firewall at the location. I have followed every other troubleshooting step they recommend per their support article but I think the unit is being blocked unless the device is no longer working.

    My port 8883 is opened on the outbound but I see it is closed on the inbound. Is that required to be opened? Since I couldn't assign a static IP to this device I am not sure how I could direct port 8883 to it? I don't see a MAC address on it to assign to. Not really sure how else I could direct incoming traffic to it on that port or any other port?

    Please let me know if you have any other suggestions.
    • view 3 more comments
    • I ended up locating the MAC address of the device, assigning a static IP to it, giving it the 8.8.8.8 DNS along with the DNS from my ISP.  It still did't seem to communicate properly although the green blinking light was now solid.  I think it may require inbound port 8883 to communicate through my Sonicwall.  I port forwarded 8883 to it and was able to setup access again.   The tech support really doesn't know anything with regards to this device, and access through any advanced routers or firewalls.

      Also, the MAC addresses for the Internet Gateway should start with 64:52:99
    • At this point, while this thread doesn't have all the answers, it is the best collection of data for anyone having such issues that I've found.  Thanks for the update.

  • I'm having an issue where no lights come on, I've changed out ethernet cables, I did all the resets and talked with a tech to go through all the resets. I can uplug and replug it and the lights flash blue and green at the same time and then nothing. So frustrated.
    • What is your setup with this device?   Are you plugged into a router or a switch?  Anything else you can offer about your network.  Per "user260510" above I think ultimately it comes down to the device not being able to "see out" and obtain a connection with the MyQ systems.  This seems to be a problem with the DNS settings in the router or outbound ports being blocked.   If you can provide a bit more detail about your own setup we might be able to offer suggestions.

  • unable to get the hub to connect to my new Asus N-600 router, It did connect to my Cisco E3000 but would drop often due to what I think was low signal hence a new stronger router. have tried multiple things such as setting the 2.4 channel to 1 instead of auto ( best channel for me anyways) and to only N instead of mixed. Still no go. Have tried with the hub in the same room as the router so signal is not he issue. I did read on your site that hubs have challenges with some AC routers. How would I establish if the hub is faulty?

  • I've spent hours and hours trying to get my internet gateway to connect. I'm an IT professional and tried all of the above. I use the private network of 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0 and it would not for the life of me connect. I tried absolutely everything I could think of. In the logs of my router I noticed the device kept on asking for DHCP leases every second. I didn't know why the gateway would not accept the DHCP address that the router leased out to it.

    I thought the device was defective. I factory reset the router as a last resort and once the subnet reset back to 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0, the DHCP address stuck. The internet gateway must have a list of "good" local subnets that it likes. So dumb and horribly designed.

  • I suffered with this for a week and finally it worked. I had to press and release the LEARN button on the garage door opener 4 times until it finally beeped once and LED started blinking (to indicate it was in Wi-fi learn mode). Then, on my phone, I went to SETTING, Selected MYQ-xxx network to connect. When I was connected to MYQ-xxx, I selected 'Learn more about recommended setting to Wi-fi.."(see picture) which took me to LiftMaster (see picture) where I could change my Wi-fi setting or erase the Wi-fi setting
