Official Smartthings support

Smartthings hub integration would be nice so my garage doors can become part of my home automation. Despite my best efforts I have not had much luck getting MyQ notifications to work. Connecting MyQ to my Smartthings hub would allow for reliable notifications, part of the reason I bought the MyQ bridge, and for my garage doors to trigger automation routines.

I wrote a nice reply to this topic, but it's becoming more apparent that you're not integrating with SmartThings due to lack of technical ability, not for any other reason.

Liftmaster - you need to explain yourself as to why you pulled SmartThings integration.

    Why are you blocking SmartThings?

Why would you take this away from your users?

I wasn't able to setup my MyQ gateway because of an issue with your software.  I spent hundreds of dollars trying to get this setup, but your software didn't work.

I waited MONTHS for you guys to fix your software.  Finally!  It works!  So I go to add it into my SmartThings only to find out LIFTMASTER/CHAMBERLAIN pulled support!  Actively BLOCKING SmartThings.

I have had over 1500 people purchase MyQ garage door drivers since January based on MY recommendation.  That stops TODAY until LIFTMASTER/CHAMBERLAIN add SmartThings support back in.

As a large company with the power you have in your industry, you have a responsibility to do the right thing for your customers.  Not playing nicely with others doesn't help your clients.  It's YOUR responsibility to be friendly with other large companies and do right for your customers and community.

This reflects TERRIBLY on your company.  If you guys can't play nice in the sandbox, i want nothing to do with you.

    • Completely agree.  Many people bought this with the intention of using it with Home Automation and pulling support for SmartThings hub has a lot of people upset.  I for one am thinking about selling my MyQ and buying a Linear Z-Wave Garage controller even it means spending twice as much to get the functionality that I want.  I have lost faith that Chamberlain/LiftMaster will ever deliver on the promise of official support for SmartThings due to their refusal to publicly address customer concerns.

Ha!  Thanks for the support, mvalenty.  Being serious, not sarcastic.  Your reply was just so simple underneath my giant rant of insanity, the juxtaposition tickled me.

Why have we still not heard a WORD from Liftmaster/Chamberlain?

I'm guessing it's because someone has a personal issue with Samsung/SmartThings over at Liftmaster and/or Chamberlain and is afraid to out themselves.

Umm, my 828LM and dual 8500 openers on my new shop need OEM support for Smartthings since the community work-around was OEM broken on purpose...   OEM, get the lead out and integrate ASAP!!!
    • Yeah, it USED to work... Then they pulled it.

SmartThings didn't change anything - the code and API are the same, I code for ST all the time.

OEM let's WINK do it, but blocked SmartThings.

Two large companies joining together to TRY to push out the largest, consumer-grade automation tool in use today - SmartThings.

And OEM - don't try to deny it.  Check the SmartThings boards - a bunch of devs have tried to hack it only to find that Chamberlain is BLOCKING ST's IPs.  They could reach the API from home, but not from ST servers.. Hmmmmmm.....
    • Wow. How is this still not fixed? Looks like I'm going to find another solution that doesn't involve Chamberlain / Liftmaster.

  • Based on the fact that Liftmaster can't even be bothered to support a reasonably secure encryption standard on this website, it is little wonder that they can't figure out how to securely support a Smartthings integration.  My patience is waning quickly.  If I can't find a reasonable integration in the next month or so, I'll just sell my MyQ devices and buy something that can be integrated into other home automation systems such as smartthings.  Enough screwing around with this crap.

  • Awwww, Todd - you're going to put that MyQ Liftmaster on someone else?!?!  I feel bad for the people that buy it.  ;)

Well said - Liftmaster claims to be the leader, but that is going to change if they don't get their heads out of the sand....

    • Piling on. It is inconceivable in 2017 that one of the largest garage door opener companies is incompatible with the largest smart home automation company. Liftmaster needs to get a new technology leader.
    • Yup, couldn't agree more.  I think they just need new leadership altogether.  The fact that no one from Liftmaster will TOUCH this thread is ridiculous.

I guess they don't have the guts to face their customers - even over the internet.  Figures, most executives I've met are just as spineless as these folks appear to be.

  • I'm bailing on MyQ. I just used a Home Depot gift card so generously gifted to me to buy a GoControl unit, which integrates almost every opener in to Smartthings the way I've always wanted myq devices to work. I believe that my opener is on it's last leg anyway. On principle alone, I'm not likely to buy a Chaimerlain/Liftmaster again. Please take note, Liftmaster. This stuff is important

  • Here here!  I concur, integration is a must!  I'm not purchasing Liftmaster again unless my existing openers become compatible with at least Smartthings (and without purchasing a new gateway device).

  • Thanks for all the posts. I was about to purchase a 828LM and will now purchase another device that will integrate with my Smart Things! This should not be this challenging. Just think about all of the increased sales if these companies would just SIMPLIFY!

  • My LM 8500 is the best GDO I have ever owned... simply love it.

I've been with SmartThings since the beginning. For those of you that really know SmartThings, I have to ask do you really want it to provide access to your home? I don't, as it simply isn't (or has it ever been) reliable enough.

I use SmartThings to send me a text if the garage door is not closed when it should be. If I get one of those, I simply use the MyQ app to close it. Doesn't happen very often, so why automate it with a service that is less reliable than it should be... and there is no way I'd let SmartThings open my garage or unlock any doors.

I don't recall Chamberlain ever mentioning that they would be integrating with SmartThings. SmartThings announced they were working on it, but like so many things they've announced, it didn't happen. There were some third party integrations, the initial one of which I was a part of, but after discovering that such an integration was against Chamberlain's TOS I abandoned it.

It is not that the integration would be "challenging". SmartThings reliability has been the real challenge, and I am not surprised Chamberlain has steered clear of it. And there have been other extenuating circumstances that have prevented SmartThings from accomplishing other third party integrations, many of which have to do with data-mining and just how much data is cached.

So, while I have no inside info pertaining to why MyQ and SmartThings never hooked up, my experience over the years has me feeling it is SmartThings' inflexibility in addressing valid concerns Chamberlain may have had that killed the deal.

As for blocking SmartThings IP addresses... I have seen several of those third party integrations that simply pounded the MyQ servers with endless and unnecessary queries, so it's not surprising they put an end to it.

You can certainly return your Chamberlain stuff if you want to... but to me that seems like getting rid of the best GDO available because it won't work on a system that has no business providing access to your home anyway. Of course, YMMV.

    • Hi Lauren, I realize that and it will be to your detriment.  MyQ is trying to be the tail wagging the dog.  Most home automation companies have conceded that creating open interfaces that can be integrated with any home automation hub without subscription  is the way to go.  Proprietary closed systems requiring subscription to a service is left to ADT and their ilk for customers that can't be bothered to do their own home automation.  You will be left on the scrap heap of failed technologies.
    • Todd, of course I don't agree with that opinion, but thanks for sharing. Lauren
