A few months ago, one of my Liftmaster 8500 openers failed. According to my neighbor, the opener started opening and closing the door repeatedly, eventually burning itself out. The neighbor called me, and by the time I got home, the opener was as dead as a doorknob..and the garage door was stuck in the open position. Anyone could've walked in and helped themselves to my stuff or my vehicles.
That's worrisome enough. What's worse is that the LiftMaster MyQ did not warn me about the scenario at all. It stated the door was closed and all was well. At a minimum, I would've expected an error message that communication with the opener had been lost.
My dealer came out, verified the motor was bad and swapped it under warranty. I haven't had a problem since. So this is not a request for help. But the bottom line is that while I was 60 miles away, my garage door spontaneously opened. It exposed me to potential theft, and there was absolutely zero warning from MyQ that the door was open, or even that there had been a malfunction. If my neighbor hadn't seen it and called me, it could've been much worse.
I understand technology can fail. But for something like a garage door opener, where access to personal property and in some cases personal safety are at stake, there should be failsafes to ensure it fails secure. Or at the very least, alerts the owner to a malfunction.

Stian November 21, 2017 16:34I spoke with my provider. This failure was apparently the same as the 888LM problem (the 8500 has an 888LM control panel attached to it.)EditDeleteRemove
