Opener Light Stay On When Configure Internet Gateway

After installing the gateway, the lights on the garage door openers stay on all the time.  I have a LiftMaster MyQ Internet Gateway and a LiftMaster Motion Detecting Control Panel (both are about 2 years old).  When I go online and delete the device, the light goes immediately out.  Other than the light issue, all other function work perfectly.

Keith - I am sorry to hear that you are having a problem with your light. I have not seen the Internet Gateway be the issue when the light doesn't turn off. One of the issues when the light doesn't turn off is the door control panel. I have included some troubleshooting step for you.

Answer Title: Why won't my garage door opener light turn off?

If you still continue to have an issue, let me know.

  • Hi Dawn.  Thanks for the note.  However, the door control panels and overhead openers work perfectly until connecting to the Internet Gateway.  If I connect both doors to the Internet Gateway, it connects and I am able to control the doors via the website and the iPhone application.  However, as mentioned, the light stay on even after 1/2 of no movement.  I am very sure it is the Internet Gateway because when I delete one of the garage door accounts, that door's light immediately turns off and the other one stays on.  Subsequently, when I delete the second door from the website, that door starts to work correctly.  Note: The Internet Gateway has both red light (Internet link) is continuously on and blue light (control panel) is also continuously on during the time when configured to open via the website or iPhone application.  Is there a way to troubleshoot or replace the Internet Gateway to determine if it is the issue?

  • This happens for me too. I have two 3280 openers which I upgraded to MyQ with new control pads. Everything was working great until I added an Internet gateway a few days ago. Now the lights in the openers never turn off.

  • We have the following equipment: two Chamberlin LiftMaster Professional Formula 1 openers Models: 1280R and 2280-976, two MyQ Control panels Model 888LM mounted above/below each other, and one Liftmaster Internet Gateway Model 828LM.

I don't believe adding the internet gateway caused the lights to stay on. I think it's the 888LMs (MyQ Control Panel). When they are installed to close there is an interference that causes the lights to stay on. Her is the information I found on this issue.

      Issue

When the MyQ Control Panel is connected to the Internet Gateway, it creates a two-way communication system which randomly sends out a burst signal of information through the 900MHz radio system. This burst signal has been found to potentially trigger motion sensors of secondary door control panels if they are too close. This close proximity may cause the lights on garage door openers to become erratic.

      Resolution
      • Separate the MyQ Control Panel from the other motion sensor by at least 12" horizontally and 28" vertically.
      • Turn off the motion sensor on the device that is displaying the erratic behavior.

  • Hi Dawn, I appreciate the information to resolve the issue, but is it not feasible to expect a customer to move their control panels the distances your company recommends or to turn off motion sensing functionality.  This is an obvious design flaw and the potential buyer should have been notified prior to purchasing the Internet Gateway of these distance requirements are needed for "normal" operation. If this was disclosed, I would have certainly not purchased the item.  I am very unhappy and dissatisfied with this situation and now have an Internet Gateway that is unusable under normal operating conditions and configuration.  I certainly understand it is not your responsibility and you are only providing the information as per your internal Knowledge Management system.  However, I would like you to escalate this issue to a supervisor or manager to determine if Chamberlin is willing to refund the cost of the unit if I return it.  I am unable to return it where originally purchased.  Thanks for your help.  As initially mentioned, It is truly appreciated.

  • I have the exact same issue... Two garage doors w/ the remote lights. Everything worked fine prior to connecting the devices to the MyQ app. Now the light stays on all the time. I can turn it off at the panel but it comes back on and stays on. I had installed the gateway 6M before connecting the devices to my phone and no issues so the proximity theory is not valid. Something changed once I connected to the app just as the original poster has described.

  • Same as the others.  I have 3 888LM wall control panels and I turned on the motion sensing for the lights on 2 of them.  They worked fine for the 2 weeks before I installed the Chamberlain myQ Internet Gateway, model # CIGBU.

As soon as I connected the wall control panels to the gateway and then to my myQ account, the lights stayed on all the time on the ones with the motion sensing switched on.

Although it's obviously not a factor, my openers are 3/4 HP Chamberlain Whisperdrive openers purchased/installed about 6 years ago.  I also use the latest Android app on my Samsung Galaxy S6 which has the Lollipop 5.1.1 os version.

This is an obvious bug which I hope gets acknowledged and remedied.

  • Hello John, I sincerely apologize that you are experiencing this issue as well. As stated by Dawn above, you can move the two 888LM wall controls apart at least 12" horizontally and 28" vertically or turn off the motion sensor altogether to correct the issue for now. In the meantime, I will forward this information to our product quality department as a necessary improvement to the 888LM wall controls.

    • Randi,

Thank you for the response.  Looking at the reviews on Amazon for the Chamberlain/Liftmaster myQ products, there are MANY out there experiencing the same issue.

Question I have is if the motion sensors are working correctly before connecting the wall control panels to the myQ gateway, what is causing them to malfunction once they are connected?  The wifi signals?

And as others have mentioned, separating the controls 12" horizontally and 28" vertically is unrealistic, unfeasible, and/or impractical for most customers.
    • I found the same issue, two controls too close together.  Disappointing this was not explained in the manual, as I spend a considerable amount of time chasing the problem.  That said, I moved the second controller, vertically down, no change horizontal.  I'd say they are about 24" apart, and this resolved the issue.  used some jumper cable and continued to move the controllers apart, until the light went off.

I concur with the other users on this message thread regarding their dissatisfaction with the existing resolution of separating MyQ Control Panels by 12" horizontally and 28" vertically for the garage lights to function properly. I have three MyQ Control Panels next to one another for a three car garage and It would seem unintuitive and illogical for me to place the control panels each apart by 12 inches horizontally and 28 inches vertically for access purposes. Alternatively, disabling the motion sensor on all the control panels is simply a safety liability for my family that I cannot accept. May Liftmaster/Chamberlain advise on the status of a resolution to this matter ASAP?

  • Looks like I have the same issue.  Just installed the remote light switch (and had to pay an electrician to change my 4-way switch to single pole), located directly under the MyQ Control Panel and now the the controlled light and the garage light were, so I thought, staying on all the time.  However, when configuring an alert of "light stays on" for more than 10 minutes, no alerts were being sent.  I have both motion and entry sensor turned on with 4.5 minute timeout to turn off.  In attempting to troubleshoot this issue, I then set alerts for immediate turn on and immediate turn off.  I started receiving alerts every 4.5 minutes that the light was being turned on and then turned off.  This continued throught the evening until I turned the alerts off.  I sure wish there was a better solution to this issue as opposed to turning the motion sensor off (this defeats the purpose of buying the remote switch) or moving the MyQ Control panel (not practical or convenient).
