I have the same issue!!! It used to work! I am only able to open the door, I am not able to close it using my phone. I have called myq customer service numerous times....they have no clue whats wrong......I did an internet search on this and several of us are having this issue!!!

Zac - When the door won't close, does your MyQ Control flash red and yellow?

No it doesnt

Just had this exact same problem happen minutes after installation of my 828LM Internet .
The first issue, was the gateway couldn't pair with the opener despite a solid green light on the gateway. After reading a few posts here, that was remedied by hitting the reset button on the side of the router.
Next, had my wife install the app on her phone (she's 10 miles away) and she was able to open the door. When trying to close it again, it received the too many failed attempts message. Thank goodness I was home, otherwise the garage door would have been left open!!
When attempting to close the door with the wall button, it would go down for maybe 2 seconds before reversing and flashing lights, as though the eye beam was broken. There's nothing in the way, and the eye beams have solid lights.
After 5-6 cycles of this, I finally pressed the wall button once and quickly a second time to 'cancel' the request and only then was it able to finally close all the way.
I gotta say, this is major security issues minutes after installation. Unless I've missed something obvious that needs needs fixing, I think this is too much risk to have in my home!!-
Dthrall - If there is an issue with the door, such as the safety sensors, the app will command the door to close but it won't close(and lights flash). If you attempt to close the door a 2nd time from the app, and the gateway will notice the error and will no longer command the door to close. The app will show a Close Error. The user must identify the situation and resolve. You must also command the door with a remote control or door control before the app will command the door to operate.
I know you said after multiple times trying to close the door at home it finally closed but there may be a slight misalignment with your safety sensors. I would suggest you realign the sensors just to be sure the issue doesn't happen again.

I uninstalled the app and manually opened and closed it two times from the wall. Re-installed it and it works like a charm!!

I have the same issue and this didn't work for me. It looks like I started having this issue after the last update (iphone app update). I was able work around it by using the Chamberlain app instead of the Liftmaster.

Kevin, that's it. You need to delete the app and reinstall. I am on iOS 9, iPhone 6+

Hi Dawn,
That was my first thought as well that the alignment was off, however that was the first thing checked and was mentioned in the posting that the green light was solid

Hi Dawn. The wall and car remotes work all the time. I have refrained from using the app because of the experience seen. Trying it just now, it worked for 3 cycles in a row. One was on local wifi and two on cellular connection. Will keep trying to find a pattern that causes it to fail.

Dthrall - Can you reach out to my via email? I would like to confirm some information with you. MyQCommunity@LiftMaster.com

Add me to the "Me Too" list. It's been working fine for a couple of years, but for the last 3-4 weeks it fails to close with a "too many failures" message. Opening the doors works fine, never fails. The doors close fine from the remote in my car, the buttons on the wall, and even from the keypad on the outside of the garage. But closing from the app fails almost every time.
I tried uninstall/re-installing the app, unplugging the openers and the gateway, moving the gateway closer to the garage.
After reading through this thread, I downloaded the Chamberlain app, and will give that a try, although it looks to be exactly the same app with different branding. -
-
Did the Chamberlain app work for you? Also my wife hasn't updated her app and she's not seeing the problem. So liftmaster needs to do a better job with updates and not break things.

My remotes and wall buttons work. But the app will only open my doors. I get then previously mentioned error when trying to close them. This only started when I updated the iPhone app. Anyone have real solution? Has Liftmaster acknowledged the problem with their update?

Use the Chamberlain app. It works perfect until they fix the issue

UPDATE for Apple users: We have seen success with this issue with the update to iOS 9.1. You should be able to update your phone and then use the LiftMaster app.

I'm updated to iOS 9.1, and still getting the "The Door cannot be controlled..." message periodically. Will try uninstalling and reinstalling the MyQ app to see if that helps.

I apologize that you are still having the issue. We are working diligently to come up with a fix for this.

Dawn, I'm still having the issue, with iOS 9.1. I think I have it figured out in my case. The app doesn't want to close the garage door after crossing the electronic eyes. The web app works perfect. The iOS app works as long as you don't cross the electronic eyes. There's some issue with either the motion sensor or between the eyes and the wall unit. The eyes are lined up fine, as every other method works.
-
-
To those of you having this issue with the retrofit wall button and internet gateway, I've figured out my issue. It's the electronic eyes on my opener. I've figured out how to get it to work reliably (so far).
1. Use the web app.
2. Do not cross the electronic eyes until the door reads as open in the web app.
3. Wait a few seconds after crossing the electronic eyes to close the door with the web app.- view 2 more comments

At this time, you don't walk through the sensors until the door is in the full open position.
-
-
And when a leaf blows by or direct sunlight tricks the sensor?

My app tells me the same thing and I closed it this morning with a remote only. Never attempted it with the app today at all. So not sure what's up with that.

This used to work great. Now my app only works with opening the garage door. It doesn't work with the close command.
-
-
Why is this even an app issue? Isn't this firmware related?
-
-
-
-
We have updated the app as of this morning which will correct the false close errors that you have been seeing.
-
I just got a "The Door cannot be controlled" error with the new version 3.3 when crossing the door sensors before the door was fully up. Looks like the problem isn't solved yet.

Still having the same issues with the updated app, albeit less frequently.
-
-
I just started having this issue yesterday and I have the latest app
-
-
I have been following this issue for several weeks hoping for a resolve as the issue of crossing the eyes before the door has opened will cause this issue with an iPhone. It is still an issue. Found that I need to wait until the open notification comes across to my iPhone before I can cross the eyes and get a successful closure through the app.
-
-
As Kristin said, you still cannot cross the eyes before the garage door is all the way open. I suspect crossing the eyes before the door is closed will cause an error which will not allow you to try to close the door again. Also, there appears to be some issue in the app that even if the door is open, you have to wait a period of time after crossing the eyes before sending the close command, or the app will just hang.

1What I have seen is that, yes, when you cross the safety sensor beam when the door is moving it is throwing the close error message. When the lights on the opener time out (approximately 4 1/2 minutes) the app will allow you to close the door. We are still trying to figure out a fix for this. -
-
Does this affect both the phone app and the web app? I just got this error for the first time today. I looked at a security camera in the garage and the beam was tripped while the door was still opening. I am going away and needing to open and close the garage to allow boxes to be delivered. Is there any known 100% work arounds at this time?
-
Use the web app. Do not cross the beam while the door is moving. Wait 30 seconds after the beam has been crossed before closing the door.

Can't answer the first question. Second question answer is: Delete the App on your phone. Reinstall. Log in with credentials. Fixed. At least that's my experience.

I've had this opener for a long time now and have never had this issue until recently. Now it happens every time I use it. This is obviously something that is very easy to recreate as it happens every time I use use it so it should be pretty easy to fix.
So what's the story? Is the firmware in the gateway the issue? Can it be updated?-
I have no idea what they are doing to fix the issue. The workaround is to not cross the beams while the door is in motion and to wait at least 15 seconds or so AFTER crossing the beams to try to close the door.

@Dawn,
So what's the progress report? This is getting a little crazy. We shouldn't have to wait 4-5 minutes for the opener to time out before we can try to close the door again. I haven't tried recently, but my buddy with the all in one opener/wifi (821LM) guy doesn't have this problem. I suspect that is because the 821LM doesn't get any feedback from the garage door eyes, it just tells it to close.-
I'm going to do what I did with my other garage doors putwthe beams up in the ceiling so they are never broken

Delete the app on your phone and reinstall it. That worked for me.

Did it before. Still get the errors. I even did it again, "just in case". Still get the errors.

I have a loaner car and so no remote to open the garage. I open from the house drive the car out and use the app to close. Guessing that is the issue as soon as I get out of the garage I press close on the app. It usually closes but still get the error message.

TonimusMaximsus,
Are you getting this Close Error with the Apple MyQ app version 3.3.3? Or do you have an earlier version of the app installed on your phone?- view 6 more comments

I worked with the support team on this problem a while back. I believe they mentioned some Underwriters Laboratory requirements about not allowing the door to go down after the beam has been crossed via a device that's not present (i.e. the app). But I had the impression they were going to fix this timeout or find some other solution in he last update. I still have this issue just like everyone else. It's more than annoying.
-
-
New version 3.4. Still can't break the beams while the door is opening without causing an error, and you still have to wait about 15 seconds after you've broken the beam before the close command will work.
-
-
Is there any official word from LiftMaster on whether this is their expected use case or do they want to fix this poor user experience?
-
They are working on it. I spent some time on the phone with one of their tech guys. There's a bunch of code that's going to have to be re-written.

The app functions much better now. With iOS 9.3.1 and the most current MyQ app, I note the following:
-Moving through the door while opening will no longer generate an error in the app.
-You still need to wait about 12-15 seconds after you have passed through the door before you try to close it.
-If the door's safety is engaged while closing and the door reverses, after about 45 seconds, the app will tell you there was an error and will let you try again. -
-
I had this same problem. So, I replaced the button battery in the sensor that is mounted on the garage door, and it all works fine now.
-
Hi Harry I missed reading your response before I posted. The door sensor battery was a suspicion of mine, but I am kind of in shock that such a simple fix to what seems to be a relatively common issue wasn't in FAQ or some other easy place to find. For example, maybe the app could suggest a low battery. What a novel idea.

I haven't seen a reasonable permanent solution to this problem. I am not an Apple user, but rather Android. My MyQ Garage Door Controller has worked fine for almost a year and the Close Error happened about a week ago. I have tried to remove and re-add the device multiple times and the error comes back every time. I am not crossing any sensors. What can I do to get help with this?
-
-
@Nick Hauss, did you replace the door sensor battery with a fresh battery?
A Close Error will occur if the MyQ app attempts to close the door twice in a row and both attempts fail closing the door (or the door sensor not reporting the door is closed).
If support is needed, contact LiftMaster technical support via email or telephone. -
-
my app was working fine till around a year ago. My assumption is the Application update messed it up back then.
Since then I replaced sensor batteries, reinstalled the controller several times but the error still comes up every other day. I have hope with every update but no improvements.
If I close the Garage manually after the error appears, it works again without problems.
Like this morning, I had an emergency and couldn't wait till the door closes when I left and my app was messed up. when I saw the error, I was already couple miles away on the interstate.
Is there any way to reset the message remotely?
I tried to set a close schedule what triggered but still shows open.-

another case, went riding my bike for 3 hours. Came home to open garage.. NOPE Sorry.. too many attempts.... Had to call my wife and she had to come home. Unbelievable
Just really bummed out
What i find hard is that even if you close the app on the phone and open it again the error message is still on there and there's no way to open the garage door.
