WiFi or Ethernet connections
Is there any way to add this device over 802.11 AC and not use the ethernet port? It appears to be ethernet only.

Nope. You would have to buy a brand new opener; they just added WiFi to the openers. With the Retrofit Package, you have to use their own proprietary wireless. It should work fine through several sheer walls and within about 100'. I know it's frustrating, but the retrofit product does work as advertised (I own a lot of automation stuff that just doesn't work; this one does).

They are brand new, just install two out of the box from Amazon, and as a bit of a nerd myself, I can't believe you aren't able to even ping the dam thing.
Thanks for answer -

No, you need a new Garage Door OPENER https://www.liftmaster.com/for-homes/garage-door-openers/elite-series/model-8557w The retrofit MyQ is NOT WiFi compatible...

You can use a Ethernet-to-Wi-Fi adapter, such as a Netgear WNCE2001 or similar product. These adapters take an ethernet input and convert to Wi-Fi (example uses: TVs with only ethernet connection, etc.). The MyQ Internet Gateway does work with the Netgear adapter and should work with other adapters.

JMurray, I 'm trying to install myQ Internet Gateway with a Gate Controler which is about 350' away. will I be able to use this Netgear device to get it within range for it to pair with the gate controler?
