Installation Requirements FAQ:

Q: What are Pivot's hardware requirements?
See http://www.getpivot.com/download/ for the full list. Pivot runs best on a Windows 7 machine that has Aero Glass enabled.

Q: What types of Windows systems are compatible with Pivot?
Pivot only runs on Windows 7 and Vista, NOT Windows XP.

Q: Can I install on Windows Server 2008?
Yes, but it requires a trick. Download the installer to your machine. Then run from the command line:
"msiexec /I (path to installer) BLOCK_SERVER_SKUS=0"
Note: The server machine must still have a high performance graphics card that can run with Aero enabled, so be sure to check the http://www.getpivot.com/download/ page to make sure it will work and then follow these instructions to enable Aero: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947036.

Q: Does Pivot run in all languages? How come everything is in English?
Pivot uses English for all of its system strings. However, you can install Pivot on machines with different language packs installed and view content in other languages.

Q: Are there hardware setups that don't work with Pivot?
Yes. For instance, Intel integrated chipsets cannot run this application and you may see a failure during install or once you are using Pivot. Other graphics cards that are not new or do not have dedicated VRAM may show unpredictable behavior including crashes, visual artifacts, or failures in installation. We may not be able to do much about these failures if you hit them with this build, but tell us about what you are seeing and we can prioritize improving this area for the future.

The Details:
- Pivot will not work on Intel integrated chipsets that don't have additional graphics hardware (e.g. an additional ATI or NVIDIA chip)
- Pivot is not likely to work on graphics card with less than 256 MB memory
- The most common issue with graphics cards and Pivot is the lack of Vertex Shading 2.0 support (which is why standalone Intel integrated chips don't work)
- If you have Wacom tablet drivers installed on your machine, you may see very slow text input or the history may behave in odd ways. Pivot will work much better on a machine without these drivers.
Q: How come I see a warning when I install?
There are graphics cards and drivers that have been shown to crash in our visualization code. We wanted to alert users if they have cards that have seen these issues. You may see nothing, but if you do have an odd visual experience, at least you can understand that in this experiment we still have issues with hardware compatibility.

Installation Problems FAQ:

Q: Installation crashes or fails during history import.
You may have a history item we did not know how to handle. Try this trick to skip import entirely. You can do this by downloading the installer and then running "msiexec /I (path to installer) SKIPIMPORT=1"

Q: Getting an error code 2738
This error is often caused by a misconfigured Windows Script Engine. Try this:
1) Run regedit.exe
2) Check to see if the registry key "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{ B54F3741-5B07-11CF-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}" exists. If it does, delete it.
3) You should be able to successfully install.

Making Collections FAQ:

Q: I have some images and facts that I want to share. How do I make these into a collection?
http://www.getpivot.com/developer-info/ - This page has all the answers. See the collection building tools, explanations of how to prepare your images, and our XML schema to organize the data. If you have other questions, ask them here!

Q: I want to start right away! What do I do?
The quickest path to a collection experience is using our collection tool. See this page for more information: http://www.getpivot.com/developer-inf...

Q: How do collection images work?
The details can be found on http://www.getpivot.com/developer-inf... Pivot renders using Seadragon technology, and this page explains how to get your content into the right file formats.

For information on Seadragon and their Deep Zoom tools, visit their developer tools page.

Known Issues FAQ:

Q: Does Pivot have compatibility issues with certain web pages?
A: Yes. Because of the experimental nature of Pivot, we do not load all pages correctly. Some errors you may see are on pages with plugins that don't work in our rendering system. Some examples:

* Java applets will not load
* Some ActiveX plugins are not compatible and may not load, leading to rendering problems or crashes
* Sharepoint datasheets don't render correctly, depending on the version of the Sharepoint ActiveX control
* If a site is ajax intensive (gmail, hotmail), going forward and backward may not always do what you expect.
* Pivot cannot open links with javascript in new tabs
* Meta tag refresh does not work in Pivot

Q: I have an issue not listed here.
Please start a new thread. Here is what we would like to see:
Look in this folder:
C:\Users\(your username)\appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Pivot
Do you see any files that start with UnhandledException* or EventListener* ? Any files that are called Pivot.log?
Please share these files with us.
