A Synthy Home Tour

  • Question
  • Updated 5 years ago
HI, I’m Marisa_abellahomes and I currently created 3 synths. Have you ever thought of using this for Real Estate Sales? I do like this as a better alternative than the common “video Tour.” What about “A Synthy Home Tour?” I created my synths with the intention of linking (to/from) from my own website or various website where I post my listings. I’m disappointed that I’m unable to do that :-( Do you ever think it would be possible in the future? It could potentially create revenue for MS and for Realtors like me. I’m always looking for more creative ways to get exposure for marketing my listings.

Yes good point indeed. We will be ussing Synth the same way for the real estate and tourism.

I wish there would be a SDK or API coming soon to the theater near us!

MS, any chance we can do more with Synth sometime soon?

Thanks for the quick response:-) This would be an ideal way to innovate a new trend in “Home Tours.” Given the current state of the economy, this is a wonderful time to explore new possibilities. I’m not a believer in business as usual. Now is the time to be creative! It could change the more commonly used “Video Tour.” No matter what business we’re in, the key is to be successful in the future!

Any chance for the short term, that I could get a link setup to/from my synth page to advertise my photosyths? You might want to consider creating a feedback/comments section? Just a thought.
Thx, marisa

Hi Marisa, you can get a link to your synths by using the user profile page. For example, my profile page is at http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage..., just put your Photosynth username in there to link to your own synths.

You can also embed the viewer (with your synths) in your own web page by using the embed logo on any view page (the embed logo looks like this <>).

I believe Bert meant http://photosynth.net/userprofilepage... (without the comma at the end).

Another e-pro Realtor like myself wants to try and synth her homes. I asked her (Mary Lockman) to post her comments/suggestions to MS labs. The more who ask, the more it will get noticed!

So Marisa, it's been a year, did you ever get it to work? I'm a real estate photographer and want to be able to upload synths like I do stills and tours. Thanks.

Hi John, No unfortunately not:( I’m unable to use it. There are plenty others out there but non like this, it has been a disappointment. I don’t get the impression that MS will being doing much in the future with it? :(

Yikes, that was a quick reply, good job! How about if a separate listing website was set up and the synths "embedded" there, did you try that?

I was able to embed it in my personal website but it’s too much trouble & I'd have several synths. I'd prefer to have it in a single viewer & stitch together. I can't use photosynth in the MLS

Marissa, please forgive me if I'm not understanding, but you would only want to stitch together synths of different rooms in the same house, wouldn't you? If that is the case, couldn't you just make a single synth of the entire house? It does take some careful photography to ensure that it all connects, to be sure, but it is certainly achievable.

Were you, instead, hoping to have a single page which lists multiple properties, which would allow you to highlight a property's title and have the appropriate synth load up within a single viewer on that single page? This too is possible, but would require a website designer to help you add this dynamic swapping functionality to your site.

On the other hand, having a separate page on your for each of the properties that you represent - each with their own embedded Photosynth viewer is another possible solution. It's a little difficult to tell exactly what your needs are.

Forgive me for not knowing, but what is the MLS? I'm finding too many possible links when I perform a web search for MLS in conjuntion with Realty. Could you share a link with me? I'd be interested in talking with their technical staff to see whether they could enable the Photosynth HTML embed code.

I get your point but it would be a really large file:( Some rooms you can do without like a hallway leading upstairs or laundry room, etc... I'm referring to home tour, still pictures with music/voice over. It really isn't virtual at all, it's cheesy. There isn't a platform for photosynth like these others have for marketing home tours.

I'm not in the business of designing an application for a Home (Virtual - Synthy) Tour. It would be great if someone could develop a Home Tour meant for synths. My personal website is home grown & it would be easy for me to add a Home Tour page to my website. Yes, marketing properties would be separate. They should each have their own "Synthy Home Tour."

The MLS (Multiple Listing Service) for home sales. Every state has one. You can visit the National MLS and make a play for it. It's very restricted with what you can download & file size would be the issue:(

Full disclosure: I'm just a Photosynth user. Let me see if I can get someone official to chime back in on this.

For what it's worth, though, a synth is somewhat unique in how it loads. Only the parts that you actually look at are ever downloaded. With the photos, if you view them at a smaller size on your screen, only a small version of each photo is ever downloaded. If you zoom in to part of a photo, only that particular portion of the higher resolution of the image is downloaded. I'm not sure whether that addresses your concerns of filesize or not. Also, it is not immediately clear to me whether the MLS's filesize limit is because they currently host a copy of photos|current virtual tours themselves or not. In Photosynth's case, the entire issue of hosting is simply handled by Microsoft.

As to a dedicated Virtual Tour program that just allowed you to plug in several Photosynths and record some voiceovers, I really think you're on to something, there. I know that it's possible because I've seen the Stargate Universe website and the Sherlock Holmes movie's site (unfortunately the Sherlock Holmes game site has been taken down, but you can still read about it) both use Photosynths in a more interactive way, displaying more information outside of the Photosynth viewer when people navigated to different parts of the synths. There isn't any reason why a developer couldn't hook into these same triggers in a synth to playback particular audio at certain points, but again, it's going to take someone with skills that you and I haven't acquired to build something that's simple for people such as ourselves to use.

Jeez, Nathanael, I thought you were one of the developers with keen insight.
Looks like we all have questions and nobody who views this site has the inside scoop.

I called Picture Path today (the service I use to load my virtual tours to Realtor.com) and of course they'd never heard of Photosynth. But I talked with a customer service representative for awhile and she said she'd bring it up at the next meeting. I sent her links to some of my fledgling real estate attempts for examples. I'll report back what she comes up with.

John, within any Get Satisfaction community, you can tell who are employees of that company by the green outline around their avatar. For example, above, you can see that Bert and Aseem are notated as employees of Microsoft Live Labs. For the full list of those who can provide you with authoritative answers, please visit this page.

I did contact David Gedye yesterday evening and he promised to look in on these two discussions. Hang in there!

Thanks for the headsup. I'm a veteran of many other forums but a newbie here. I'm looking forward to their insights.

Nathanael & John, thank you both. It's seems like my voice is finally being heard. It think it could be a great opportunity for someone to develop a Home Synthy Tour. I'm sure there is a market for real estate agents & photographers. I have 3 synths listed under abellahomes on photosynth. I appreciate you both trying to run with this. I've been traveling a bit. I would welcome the opportunity if you both would reach out. Keep me in the loop & I would like nothing more then if something could get devleoped, I'll test it out on my own website.
