Specify that only a subset of images appear in the displayed synth

In Photosynth creation, it would be good to have some way of selecting a subset of images for display, either before or after synthing, with the rest merely being used as "scaffolding" which I wouldn't want to appear in the final synth (making them less prominent could be another option). Before is probably easier to implement and I'm pretty sure I’d have a good idea of which pics I definitely wanted to have in the synth, so would be happy to mark those specifically. In any case, it's probably easier to select those images before synthing than picking through the synth after.

On the other hand, it would be convenient also to be able to throw out rogue pics after the event - eg, some image is blatantly mispositioned in the synth, so it would be convenient to point at it and remove it. (Perhaps a compromise would be to have some filename tooltip or similar when you point to an image in the synth so that I can easily identify which one is "wrong" to be able to remove it and try synthing again - currently matching by eye is a fair amount of effort.)

Great Idea Gavin...This is exactly the thought I was planning to post until I saw your comment. I understand the need for the scaffolding but also agree that it would be great to focus greater attention on some images than others. Another way to think of it would be two buckets : one for pics used in the display view and one for those that aren't. Theoretically you could allow either the creator, the end user, or both to move photos between the two buckets, right?

Yes to the bucket idea. The creator owner has the control to say if the end user can see both buckets, or just the display view bucket. Of course some will have no idea which should be in which bucket... there could be a lot of messy synths...

I also think this is a great idea.

I like the ideas too. It's like some other ideas. Synth "splitting". Delete/hide pics.

I've been thinking that writing this into the synther would take more work than writing a mod for the viewer. I was just flipping through the graph view today and wondered if you could make something as simple as using SHIFT to select a range or CTRL to choose individual items and then only display the highlighted images when you switch back to 3D.

It seems like this could immediately capitalise on existing data, rather than developing extra attributes for the next version of the synth model. I'm no developer, and I know that this would be a relatively quick fix (as compared to having a full fledged control integrated into the synther tools) but wondered what your thoughts were.

Yes. I'll grant some of the noise is probably behind some of the synth goofs (only use sweet light on stone buildings, I'm guessing), but I've been working with taking a lot of relatively uninteresting and superfluous shots to help things synth up right. I'd love to drop those and the errors.

I mean, I don't mind the CPU time and bandwidth on a 1000-photo synth (kilosynth?), if you guys don't, but it'd be nice to keep the synthiness while turning them into a 100-200 photo collection of the best shots.

So that a huge number of images could be used to create the point-cloud but only certain ones would be viewed, this is a good idea :¬)

good idea, but currently it seems the choice of subset is automatically made by photosynth. i have tried to make a few, even some I for sure know can be stitched into panoramas, but all fail in photosynth. of 10-20 pics only 3-5 are used in the final output in photosynth.
