Unlisted synths continue to appear in Virtual Earth/Live Search Local when exploring collections.

Hello Photosynth team,

I realise that Photosynth.net is very much in a transition at the moment and that we are using features before they are exactly final, so... no worries.

I have noticed, however, that marking one of my synths as unlisted, although effective at removing it from searches and the GoeExplore page on photosynth.net does not remove it from the map when exploring in Virtual Earth. (as in http://maps.live.com )

I understand that when a synth is unlisted it is still able to be linked to and once someone has that link, they can still visit and view the synth. In this case, since Virtual Earth already cached the link to my synth before I delisted it, it still links to it after I have marked it as unlisted. This is logical and I understand that Virtual Earth integration is still very much an unfinished and secondary feature as far as currently released features go, but I would say that this needs to change if you want the confidence of your users.

I have not yet created a synth that is unlisted from the very beginning to see whether it would also appear in VE, but my expectation is certainly that it would not. In any case, please know that I am only looking out for the health of Photosynth as a product. People will expect that when they mark a synth as Unlisted that it will not appear in any affiliated Microsoft websites. There's not much we can do, I suppose, if Google and friends cache the page of a synth before it's unlisted, but since you have a hand in VE integration with your own division I was hoping to see some action here.

As I finish writing this I do recall that as of the update that allows us to mark synths unlisted, we are also given the ability to delete geotags. I suppose that that is some sort of temporary solution although I would like to be able to geotag all of my synths and keep some of them private when appropriate without thinking any more about it, the same as I do when making private collections in Virtual Earth. It is also not clear to me that deleting a synth's pushpin on photosynth.net would necessarily remove it from Virtual Earth's map since I do not know the details of how the publishing works.

I hope to see this acknowledged and addressed as soon as possible.

*Edit: I have now tried deleting the geotag from the synth in question and can confirm that it does not appear to remove the synth's listing in Virtual Earth. I do understand that caches do take time to update and this may be the case of me not giving VE a chance to update, but I thought that the report was still useful information. How does Virtual Earth handle synths which get deleted? There must be some sort of parallel action to take with an unlisted synth.

Hi Nathanael, we do pull unlisted (and un-geotagged) synths from the feed we provide the Live Maps team. They have some processing and caching in place which prevents the data from being pulled immediately but if you check back in a couple of days, the synth should be gone.

So... one to two weeks to see a synth drop out of Live Maps? I believe I unlisted the synth I'm talking about on the 21st or 22nd and today is, of course, the 29th.

In any case, feel free to mark this issue solved, but I'd still like to see the turnaround time shortened. It seems as though it's out of your hands but I can't help expressing the desire for the change to be more prompt.

Thanks again for all of your team's work on continuing to make Photosynth an excellent product.

Hi Nathanael, Can you send me a link to where your unlisted synth shows up in the map. I'm trying to investigate the issue and this would help.

No problem, Nathan.

You should see an email in your inbox presently as it seems a bit counter-intuitive to post the link here. Let me know if it doesn't show up.

Thanks for your time.
