Where is the start synth button?

  • Question

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have downloaded the photosynth software which signs in to my account correctly. But when the software opens and I add the photographs, give it a title, add tags etc etc I cannot find anything that resembles a button to kickstart the synth. Can you help...please?
PS I use windows XP and IE8

Hi, Greg,

As long as you've added at least three photographs and given the synth a title, the 'Synth' button in the lower right of the 'Create Synth' window should light up and become pressable.

Is that not the case?

Hi and thanks Nathanael

I have looked again and there is no button marked create synth. Everything else seems to be there title, tags, licence, add photos but nothing i can press. I have even downloaded the software twice. I am perplexed.

Well, you may actually be having a problem that I haven't encountered, but here's a snapshot where I've circled the button that I mentioned before. Does this stay greyed out for you even after you've added three photos and given a title? It's disabled until you do those two things but it should become accessible thereafter.

If you're on an 800x600 screen and the taskbar is covering the buttons, click in the description box with the mouse, press the tab key four times, then press the space bar.

Thanks Nathanael and Bitplane.
I have tried altering the resolution bitplane and what you suggest but still no button is visible. It just isn't there. But the funny thing is when I just give the synth a title but leave the tags blank the return button works instead!

Hi, Greg,

I'm glad you've found a workaround. :)

Don't feel like you have to do this, but I'd be very interested in seeing what you're seeing. I've not heard of the buttons just not being there and I'm sure that the guys at Live Labs would be interested in seeing this as well. If you could post a screenshot of what you're looking at like I did above I'd appreciate it.

If you're up for the challenge, here are the steps. (If you're familiar with this I apologise for overexplaining.)

1) when you've got the Synth window open, press the 'Print Screen' key
2) open Paint or any other image editor
3) press Ctrl+V to paste in the image of your desktop
4) from the 'File' menu, choose 'Save As'
5) choose JPEG or PNG from the 'Save As Type' dropdown list
6) notice the folder you're saving in and click 'Save'
7) reply to this message and use the 'Add an image' link in the lower left corner of the text entry box
8) click on the 'Browse' button, find your screenshot, and double click it
9) click the 'Upload' button back here on the webpage
10) you should see the appropriate html code injected into your text box
11) type anything you care to say and click 'Post reply' as usual.

I am experiencing the exact same problem. The button simply does not exist. It's not like it's greyed out waiting for pics to be uploaded, it is just not there. I have un-installed and re-installed. Even re-installed the OS (for other reasons) and tried again to install synth. To no avail. Here's a pic.

Hi, Bird,

What error does it give you? If you could quote the error message it would help to figure out what is going wrong.

BJ,

You should be able to browse any synths that have been completed by visiting http://photosynth.net. Are you having problems when you try to view synths? Do you get an error message and if you do what is it?

As for the button not activating, can you please confirm for me that you have filled in the first blank in the top left hand corner of the Create Synth window?

I think this is straying off of the threads subject. We need to stick to the current problem which is the button does not exist! Start a new thread with a new problem if there is one. No one has even written a comment about the pic I posted and the lack of a button.

Hi Big Bad Brune,

What is the monitor resolution you are using? Or are you using a netbook? It looks like the buttons are cut off due to small screen size (the white space circled in red is smaller than regular). The current synther dialog is about 530 pixels in height. Thanks.

I am using a netbook, an MSI wind which I believe the resolution is 1240x600. Is there any way to stretch from where you circled? I'll try and report back.

So you cannot alter the window size to show buttons. It Seems that the bottom of the window is cut off but I can slide it up aand see the bottom and still no buttons. Luckily just pressing enter like a previous poster says works for now.

Hi, Bruno,

Glad that you can at least get synths to start synthing. I was able to duplicate your problem by dropping my resolution to 800 x 600 and launching the Create Synth dialogue. As you reported the buttons are simply not drawn in the window. If you leave the window open and then raise the resolution, you will be able to resize the window to much larger and the buttons will still not appear even though they now have enough room, however, if you close the Create Synth window first, raise the resolution second, and then click the Start a new synth last of all with a monitor vertical resolution greater than 600 pixels, you should immediately see the Synth and Cancel buttons.

I realise that on your netbook a vertical resolution greater than 600 may not be an option for you. One option may be to visit the Advanced Settings in Display Settings and use the 'List All Modes' button to see whether your computer will generate a resolution higher than the physical pixels of your LCD screen. This is a bit risky though, if your video drivers don't play nice with higher resolutions and you may find yourself needing to restart in Safe Mode to reset the resolution.

For anyone else reading this, the solution seems to be that once you've got three or more images and have titled your synth as Big Bad Bruno has demonstrated above, you should be able to click in the Tags, Description, or even back in the Title field where he has written Grand Central Station above (after you've clicked in Tags or Description) and press Enter to begin your synth.

my netbook has a resolution no greater than 600 vertically. Atleast we have a workaround though. I got my synth to work so that's good. Thanks for the help!
