Pen Display has stopped working

I bought livescribe pulse last year and its display screen has stopped working. Even when it works the characters are broken and it always indicate battery is low. There is no feedback for me to know if the recording is working or if it is stopped. Can somebody from the company help me with this problem?

  • Hi 'mlachmann'

Many thanks for the tip, that is very useful.

A 30% Discount offered is pretty good especially after 5 Years! Mine failed just outside of the Warranty period (which was now some time ago) - I had not even got through half of my first A5 Notebook (Number 1) when it failed however at the time LiveScribe did not want to know (and still don't!).

I cannot understand how something could fail so quickly and on so many models... the number of disgruntled customers is simply staggering. I supply TV & Film props for movies etc and we have cameras and other bits of tech dating back to the early 90's (and way beyond for other things) with LCD screens that are still fully operational?

How could a modern company have got it so wrong?

Frankly I'm amazed due to the number of pens that have failed that the products have not been recognised as having a design flaw from day one and why there has not been a Class Action brought against LiveScribe so that customers can get their money back for purchasing a duff product?!?!?

  • My OLED died at least a year ago on a pen I bought in Dec '12. I stopped using the pen because I figured the whole thing was dead. After doing some tests it turns out it still works. I discovered this after I bought a new Livescribe 3+ a few weeks ago. I must say, I like the 3+ much better. I like not having to plug it in and upload the pages to a computer. Everything happens automatically via smartphone. Best of all, no OLED to die. Hopefully this thing won't crap out on me.

  • The FSR on the LS3 has been shown to have problems. Look at the other forums. I do not think that Livescribe has ever built a pen that doesn't have a problem

  • I'm a huge fan of the 8GB Echo since buying one in Oct 2012. I use it daily at work and have sent them to others as gifts after they've commented on mine.

However, I have to say the LED problem has dampened my enthusiasm. My LED screen has gotten gradually dimmer over the past year and has now become unreadable. Given this, can I buy a refurbished Echo for a reasonable price to replace my original?

    Thoughts?

I have an Echo Livescribe 4 GB and the display simply just stopped working. Now I have no way to know if it is on or off or recording or not. Can anyone help?

    • Maritza I figured a few things out, including tracing out the menu structure to click it blindly. I have a Livescribe Pulse. Here are some details:

Tip #1. In a dark space - bathroom with lights off and door closed - I can still see the very dim display enough to operate the pen. I'm guessing soon enough it will die completely, but try it with your pen and see.

Tip #2. I definitely use the volume up/down control in the livescribe notebook to ensure the sound volume is adequate. Then when I use the menu navigator up/down/right/left at least I get the chirps from the pen's speaker.
Using tip #1 above I traced out the menu of the Pulse pen. Here it is:

** Main Menu: (click down to get to first item - Applications)
      Applications
      Paper Replay
      Piano
      Movies
      Translator Demo
      Shortcut Buttons
      Settings

** Settings Menu (click right when at Settings to get to 1st item - Rec Quality):
      Recording Quality
      Microphone Sensitivity
      Playback Latency
      Menu Voice
      Display Brightness
      Scroll Speed
      Display Orientation
      Date Format
      Time Format
      Launch Line
      Auto-off Time
      Smart Pen Name
      Locale (Language)

      ** Auto-off Time:
      30 min
      1 hour
      2 hours
      4 hours

Menu Voice (click right when at Menu Voice):
      On
      Off

If you enabled sound volume as in tip #2, then follow the chips as you Navigate the menu. When you reach the top or bottom of the options in the menu you will hear a sound that signifies that you have reach top/bottom of the list. Thus to enable menu voice, once you are in that option selection, just go up until you hear that you are at top of the list - the On option. The go left to leave that setting on.

I hope this helps. Oh by the way the voice navigation of the menu does not announce the items in the settings. Only the top menu items. Thus I am glad I traced out the Settings menu while I can. I only care about the Auto-off time personally. Let me know how it goes.

    • Having also several Livescribe pens with this 'display problem', I indeed use now with succes only the menu in the Dot Paper booklet. By navigation and controlling with the headset it doesn't have to be a problem while preparing for an interview or a lecture. Of course it isn't ideal. Thank you Stan

  • The first 3 Echo pens (2*8gb 1*2gb) that I bought had this problem with the LED. The service department is useless they first ask for the pen serial number ( read the screen) when you find the log file and the number they use this information to tell you the pen is out of warranty.

I bought two more (2*8GB) on ebay one has the same problem and the other still works.

There must be a way to get these repaired CAN SOMEONE PUT A YOUTUBE ON LINE FOR HOW
    • Display can be replaced. I haven't found a source for these OLED displays (except from dead pens with bad CPU but working display.) If Livescribe won't repair, why not sell replacement parts to 3rd-party repair services? Some instructions and links at http://amasci.com/elect/livescribe.html

  • I’m Extremely Dissapointed
display died just when my warranty expired?
and i still have like a year or more on my Evernote account.

Livescribe Support claims their OLED is good for 4-6 years with a warranty for 2!
and offer 20% discount to buy a new device?

so basically, ever 2 years you spend another $100+ to test their product.

Keep it up livescribe! lets see how long you survive with selling defective products.

    • I started doing the same thing user Stan C. did last night--using my pen blindly since the display is dead. I noticed in the manual that one of the functions on the Sky is Voice Enable On/Off. I don't know how to tap into it to turn it on so that I can hear the functions as I tap. I contacted Livescribe so that I can get the menu path, but the customer service on chat was NOT smarter than the average bear and kept telling me that the only thing I could do was increase the brightness. Did he not understand English when I wrote that the display is dead? Geez. Anyway, if you could send me the path, that would definitely be the solution to all Sky users with dead displays--turn on Voice Enable by tapping blindly into it.

  • I spoke with a shop that fixed broken phones They just need a supply of the LED to fix. Where do we source the LED
    • > I have found an OLED consultant

I'll buy a bunch. Those 18-pixel displays, not the standard 16

Also, does your OLED person know about display life (as in, is there a pricier techology with 10X more life than the displays being used? And, might this be an issue of biological contamination, like metallophile corrosion rather than simple chemistry? Pass all the displays through an industrial food-irradiator to halt the degradation in its tracks? Maybe the black-spots problem is an actual disease!

  • As you can see this is a 5 year old thread so your problem is not new. ALL Pulse, Echo and Sky pens have this problem. The displays will fail after a number of years. The company knows about the problem but my guess is they can't afford to fix the million or so pens that have been sold over the past 8 years.

This is why they and other smartpen companies now rely on your phone or tablet for the main functionality.
    • Not true: if they were legit, they'd be providing the critical repair parts.

This especially is an issue for big education buyers and govt repair depots doing bulk parts-purchase and performing large scale maintenance on early life failures, where every repair is the same thing.

And for individuals, if your iPhone's glass panel, or the loudspeaker is screwed up, you just go online and buy one. No big deal.

    • You won't find a jeweler, or most of the time a mobile phone shop that is properly equipped to replace the OLED display.

A jeweler just doesn't have the right electronic equipment, full stop. Most mobile phone shops also won't be able to do it; they do work on electronics, but they work on electronics that are ultimately modular. A mobile phone display can be replaced by doing some fine mechanical work to separate the back of the phone from the display, then unplugging a cable and plugging a replacement in before reassembly.

The OLED on the Livescribe pens is held in place by some very fine solder joints on an easily-damaged mylar cable. You need an electronics specialist that can do custom, very fine soldering work. There aren't too many of these around any longer, though they used to be much more common in the early days of computing.

You need an independent shop because any chain isn't going to want to touch custom fine electronics work with soldering. The employees aren't sufficiently trained most of the time and they also don't want the liability.

Back in the day, there were shops that did "computer repair" the old fashioned way—not by undoing some screws and then plugging and unplugging entire assemblies (drives, expansion cards, etc.) but on discrete components. The kind of places that can restore '80s vintage computing systems (say, an Amiga or a Commodore) or do alignments on old storage mechanisms are the kinds of places that would be willing to do this kind of work.

A few laptop repair shops might be able to do it as well—look for someone that re-waves BGA flat-packs or similar—someone that works at the component level.
    • > does anyone want to buy an OLED?

I'd buy a handful! Someone should start selling these on eBay. Right now I'm buying stuck-error pens on eBay for $10; extracting the working displays.

If you're a hobbyist who's done SMT soldering, the display isn't that hard to replace. Not for beginners though. It's about the same as working with the large 0805 resistors and capacitors. Here's the first one I tried (complete with filthy fingernails) http://amasci.com/graphics/echopen/pe... Worked fine for about 1.5yrs on a used eBay display, before needing yet another one

  • I am in a similar boat. I have a Sky 2GB whose LED is almost unreadable. Again, it's too bad because the pen, notebook, and Evernote integration are otherwise flawless. I loathe contributing to e-waste, but once I cannot see the display anymore it renders the device almost useless.

    Sad, really.
    • No disagreement about the short life of the display! We all have said "that's sad", too.....

As you read the other posts, you will find that you will want to squeeze every bit of use you can from the pen because you have so much invested in the pen "in hand". Transfer to pen with a bright display is out of the question. Continuity is lost.

Dark display pens still work even though they are dark. Turn the volume up and the tones will guide you as to function. That's probably the best advice to start.

Good luck, all is not lost, just inconvenient.

  • I have had a live scribe echo 4GB for 4 years and the display died on it as well, pen is working and seen by computer just no display.

I had a lengthy chat with customer service and explained that I felt they should issue a free replacement, since this is obviously a known issue. No solution was offered other than letting me buy a new pen at a 30% discount.

This experience has left me with a very bad impression of Livescribe, when there is a known issue, I expect the company to stand behind their product and take care of its customers.

If there was an issue with the LCD that caused them to extend the warranty to 3 years, what would really make sense is to just have a lifetime warranty on the display part of the product. There's no reason it should fail within just a few years on what is a premium and expensive product.

This was on the livescribe website when I just checked. This company is disgusting for not addressing this issue right away. These are expensive investments. Especially for college students for whom them marketed very heavily. Someone get a lawyer to get a class action lawsuit going against these guys.

  • I’m really frustrated
Right now I wanted to get ready for a conference where I intended to use one of our school's Smartpens (3 Pulse and 3 Echo) - and none of them was able to show any life sign on the display even though they seem to work when connected to the computer.
This is more than bothering since there is no customer service in Switzerland that offers help in these circumstances.
How exactly are the responsible people addressing the obvious flaw in the construction of the pens? Is it possible to get replacement displays so that we can care - on our own risk - for repairing our 6 pens? For a number of the pens we are extremely far from a lifetime of 5 years - as all seem to agree.
    • Contact livescribe, all you get is an offshore 3rd-party fulfillment group who obviously doesn't speak english. If you ask about buying the display, they give you the standard response: they'll sell you a new pen at a discount. No, I want to buy a large quantity of the displays! Ah, they'll sell me a large quantity of the pens at a discount! They absolutely refuse to answer direct questions, or refer messages to their sales department. I suspect that they don't know what the words "bulk purchase" or "internal parts" mean. But somewhere in my messages I've said the word "repair," so obviously I MUST have a broken pen, and they insist on selling a replacement pen. Okaaaaaay I give up. Sheesh. (Hint, if you try this yourself, don't claim to own a pen, and certainly DO NOT write the word "repair" in any message.

I have suggested to Livesribe that they make these available at cost so that we can individually find a skilled technicians to do the replacement. I have 5 of these Echo pens and only one still has full function though all work but the screen is the issue. The new owners of the company direct you back to the loop of Livescribe who basically waste your time until you get board with them Great pity as the concept is a good one

    HI

I am writing this message to all the users/ reviewers who have written to Livesccribe about an issue / workaround / suggestions etc but I assume now everyone has come to one conclusion : They Don’t Listen

The max you can get is a response that the idea is under consideration which never happens or they choose to remain mute .

I brought this pen in 2012 , wrote to Livescribe about custom papers and change of ink feature , got standard replies : Under consideration and then nothing happened. I never used the pen after that although it was around $200.

Recently I picked up my pen and checked the site again about the improvements etc but the features I asked and numerous users asked for was still not implemented. Almost 5 years and no development , this speaks volume about the attitude of company towards customers. This company is not selling a cheap product , but a quite expensive one and still no customer support.

I came across a product feature about adding a clip instead of a cap on the echo pen and the buyer was kind enough to actually backed his suggestion with potential drawing, but as usual : No Response .

I have come across several posts like these where users have submitted requests with illustrations, but have not gotten a response to acknowledge , forget about implementing the idea.

If a idea is not feasible user should be made aware of technical difficulties and it should be closed , just keeping a post open for 5 years with a response here and there is not we paid good money for.

Guys , If you like your smartpen but have set it aside because it lacks the features you desire , or you don’t get what you were looking for and now way past the date to return the pen , here’s what we can do .

Go to Livescribe’s various Facebook pages and just make the potential buyers aware of this company’s attitude. Having a great product is not enough , company should back it up with excellent development team and customer service team .

  • It's obvious to me. The original Livescribe was a bunch of guys with a good idea and some backing from deep pockets. Subcontract out the manufacture of their design to someone in China, and only market the product. That's why their are no spare parts or repairs offered. It was their intent to spin off the company and walk away millionaires. It seems to have happened:

"The writing is on the wall for more consolidation in the world of startups... both literally and figuratively. Today (posted Nov 6, 2015) Anoto, a digital writing company based out of Sweden, announced that it would acquire longtime partner Livescribe, another a smart pen maker, for $15 million in a deal that is expected to close this month.

Specifically, Anoto says this is an all-cash deal and is based upon an enterprise value of $15 million “equal to estimated annual sales for 2015.”

This is a bargain of sorts, but a poor return for investors: Oakland-based Livescribe, founded in 2007, had raised at least $68 million from backers like Qualcomm, Crosslink Capital and Scale Venture Partners."

  • Yes , I agree , the founder of the company some Jim Magaraff did a good job , but eventually sold the company to bunch of losers who cannot take the idea forward, checked Jim's profile and it still chairman in this company. Not sure how much truth there is , but one thing for sure , I will not be buying anything from this company or the new company this guy has setup with another good idea.
All they do , develop the idea, do some work , sell it and walk away millionaires. Anyways spread the word , this forum is not enough , do it on FB , Twitter etc etc , whatever you have a online presence. This is the least we can do to punish these cheats. Please spread the word and encourage others as well , we as customers cannot take them to court but we can surely hit their bottomline if we continue raising awareness about them . Takes no more than 5 mins to copy paste somewhere ,

It may be worth noting that if the pens were sold in the UK then they come under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which was replaced by the Consumer Rights Act which came into force on 1st October 2015.

Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.

Fit for purpose means both their everyday purpose, and also any specific purpose that you agreed with the seller (for example, if you specifically asked for a printer that would be compatible with your computer)

    More information is here: http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-right...

You have 5 years in Scotland and 6 years in other parts of the UK to claim.

  • I’m frustrated
Bottom line, this is my second, and I'm twice disappointed. Actually the first model was better. People should work the bugs out before they market their products. I have the Echo Sky wifi. I probably didn't use up two pages in my notebook. By the way that's a good indicator of the lifespan of the LIVESCRIBE. I bought 4 books when I purchased my first one. Two of those books are still brand new; not a word was written in either, and no more than a quarter of either of the other books was used. The concept is GREAT, but that's where it ends. If another company make the pen, I may buy it, but LIVESCRIBE, no way.
