"barnaclebarnes: not having businesses, ratings or comments approved straightaway just doesn’t work. I'm not sure why this is done? You need instant gratification otherwise you think "what's the point". Maybe as a half way stage on the mobile app you can add a business and it shows up for you so you can rate, rave, etc."

"Lorraine: The businesses do have a manual process, we're working on how we post raves and other posts onto the site as we go through Beta but you will see things speed up and after a certain point posts will go instantly."

We've got to get permission from the businesses before we can list them in the site so there's a manual contact process. We're processing as fast as we can though!

Why? I don't know if any other site like this that needs permission? Menumania lets you add restaurants, foursquare does, etc. What if a business doesn't let you list? People will think the site isn't that great as it is not comprehensive.

That's the optimal business process for us at the moment and it's free for a business to list. But we're speeding it up and automating it as fast as possible."

"mandamonium: moderation. Fine, if you want to check me out the first few times I add things that is cool - but don’t make me wait all weekend to see it go up!

"yingkong: I suggested two business (plus a review and I couldn’t ad a photo) on the iphone, where can I view whether or not the business has been approved. It doesn’t sync to my online profile (on the website) so I can’t check it anywhere.

We're getting permission from the businesses before we can list so this is the hold up. Once it's there you'll be able to see raves etc

I honestly think this is a fundamental problem with the business model in the early days. I know you have "business reasons" for this but they mean nothing if the users get frustrated (as you see a few of us have) .

Right now I think things are to heavily weighted for the businesses being listed and this is one area where you just have to be different from Yellow, etc. We all know Yellow sucks because they are to pro advertiser so you know what we do? We just use Google. Same thing could happen here if you are not careful.

So this is just a big heads up warning to Localist - I think you really need to consider this very carefully. If in the end you decide to still require pre-vetting of businesses then fine but I really think you should proactively clean the data rather than put a brick wall up for users. Engagement will (and has even with #the100) suffer.

Just my 2 cents. I'll shut up about this now ;-)

Thanks. We hear you. Legal processes are a minefield for us and trust me, we are trying to 'break the mold' as fast as we can. Trying to make this site as dynamic as possible is something we need to achieve to be a credible social media - but getting businesses to 'opt in' is something we might not be able to avoid. One thing I would say is that 'talk' is another way to just post anything to the site. We are trying to make this feed the place that you can promote anything from a garage sale to a volunteer hunt to a general shout about something you like. The balancing act is quality content versus quantity of content. Now I will shut up too! Sheryl (head of marketing)

It would be good if the business that we suggest come up in our online profile. This way we can track the process/progress, this would be great for transparency and would easy frustration.
Maybe it could be three step process
1) Contacting business
2) Waiting approval
3) Declined/approved

What is the current turn around time for post appearing, I still have lots pending, some from earlier in the week. These are existing businesses not new ones.

Hi Linda,

They should be happening daily. I've just checked your though and can see some that have been missed. Sorry about that and we're on it (as well as fixing our process in the back end!). In good news though, because you've put so many quality reviews into the site they should appear instantly.

Cheers for feeding back and for all of your patiencec as we sort stuff out.

Do business have to approve the reviews...? I'm curious about this statement from the email:

"If it's a negative rave that's still fair, you still earn points, even though it's passed back to the business not published."

No they don't. The philosophy behind the site is to talk about what's good around here. So if a business has done a bad job and you take the time to feed back on that we pass that back to them. Your star rating still shows so people can see that you've given them a lower rating and weigh that up agaist the other ratings on the site. However we only post the positive raves on the site.

So a good review appears in both stars and text, but a bad review is only reflected by the stars, is that correct?

Correct. The star rating counts and influences how high up they appear in search - it's a measure of what we're calling popularity. We decided not to publish the negative comments as many similar sites both in NZ and overseas found this led to many problems - including sites being used as a battleground for warring parties. We may tweak this slightly in future when we have a chance to build new functions. Localist site V1 is really just the starting point.

Glad I discovered this thread as I was wondering why all three of my average/negative reviews had been sitting as 'pending approval' for so long! Wish this had been clarified more at the beginning, I wasn't sure if I would have bothered writing such an essay on Wagamama! Apologies about that by the way, I was thinking you probably meant me when you said you weren't looking for 'essay length' ones! However I was just trying to justify my 1-star rating. Overall, will probably just stick to 'raving' about the places I do enjoy from now on... Upon launch would recommend you make it more clear that anything written with a 2.5 star rating or below is not going to appear on the site?

Wagamama not flash then!! Good point and we are writing all the guides now for the site to help users navigate their way around. All this feedback has been of great help in knowing what other users will ask.
