Five months of Locusing

I am just about to finish a five months mountanbike trip through spain (http://www.alpenzorro.de/rehabilix/ for some pictures), with about 10 hours of playing around in Locus every single day. All in all, it behaved quite nicely. No data loss, all tracks properly recored, no crashes, everything went more or less fine.

My only wish is: menion... please become a mountainbiker!

Or at least come cycling with me for two weeks, into areas without perfect OSM coverage, into areas without perfect 3G coverage, into areas of 40 degrees with bright sunlight and dark sunglasses. All those weird UI design choices and strange quirks and click orgies in Locus would go away really soon afterwards, automatically :)

Yes, menion, join joeloc on one of his trips - you will NEVER forget :-)
And we won't either, thanx to his live-coverage which is AMAZING!!!

Thanks, menion, for this app!
Thankx joeloc for using this app and sharing your experience! Glad that you are well again ;-)

BTW: Menion, could you include indoor maps of world-war I fortresses?! (that would help joeloc a bit) ;-)

what should I say :). Our discussions are always very similar - you see Locus GUI as full of unnecessary clicks and GUI stuff, I see it as a nice and clean. Never-ending discussion. But I hope, that you see, that I'm trying to make GUI less "quirky and full of click orgies" :))

Anyway, glad you use Locus, glad you post interesting posts that force me to think more about stuff I do

Lars: you may display own maps (or create them for joeloc) simply by calibrating images in Google Earth and storing it as KMZ files.

To be honest, I have kind of given up on the GUI issue. Something as simple getting a track from a tour portal (a one click operation for OruxMaps) is complete requester-madness plus scrolling-madness plus need-to-remember-filenames-and-guess-track-names-madness in Locus. Do that ten times a day, every day, for 150 days in a row. Then you will know what I mean and why I sometimes silently curse you... :).

But there are other things besides the GUI that are kind of bad, especially on a handle bar. I will flood this forum with a few new topics if you dont mind, only very simple things but they would still make life on the road A LOT easier. No need to rush though, the trip is over. Plus we can always use OruxMaps for the simple things and switch to Locus when the tasks get more complex... sucks... but what can you do :-).

joeloc, one serious issue with zoom-lock done, other request are expected ;) ...

just please consider, that you're not only one who use this app. Changes I make are done to fix most people as possible. So I don't want to change Locus to JLocus that will fix exactly what you need when you travel :)

I support joeloc ́s ideas. At least after the redesign of Locus the track menu is very clumsy to handle. Isn ́t locus a travel app too? Maybe I didn ́t find it, but is there any possibility to implement a shortcut into the track menu for faster handling?

Best regards idefix

Clicks required to get into Locus shop (something that maybe happens once a week or even less): two.

Clicks required to get to the list of recorded tracks (something thats required *very* *frequently*) : FOUR(!)

But sorry... I wanted to shut up about the UI :)...

hm... it's 4 for me: menu -> data -> tracks -> type (the last level is kind of new and quite frankly totally sucks, but i havent yet found a way around it)

- menu:

= 3

but maybe there is a way (in the future) to create a shortcut to "tracks" in the right panel..

hm. i always start counting from main menu. if i'd start counting from toolbars, i'd have to add the (threefinger)click they need to appear. but yes... in case the toolbar is already visible, your THREE is obviously correct :).

... and after selecting a track: with an OK- or only the Back-button immediately back to the main map screen :-)

I agree with joeloc. There are too many steps to get to the very important places
- tracks menu - the path to them was shorter until the category division was introduced. and sometimes i need to wait a few seconds until the tracks will load. this is insane - I need to wait for track being loaded at the start of Locus, and then at getting to the tracks menu.
- maps - now I need to click additionally on: Personal and then on MAPS. It should remember the last used category ( between Locus restarts) and i should automatically unfold the last unfolded map folder ( in this case MAPS )

So this is not going into right direction. The menus used more often should be one-click. and they arent. this is painful especially on bike, or in rain, or when the phone is sluggish, because there are other apps in the background

I understand Tracks screen, but in case of maps screen, Locus should always return to exact state in which screen was when you left it! This is not happening to you?

Not always. Sometimes im landing on the Online tab ( which I was not using recently) and sometimes MAPS folder is closed ( and I didnt close it). Tabs should be long-clickable to make them favourite and always opened at entry to map manager. Im sad that Quick Map Switch doesn't work as is should. I dont know why, but Nearest maps - personal are very rarely showing me the map I want to choose. The other thing is, there should be also "Recently used maps" area for personal maps. Or better it be to merge "Recently used personal maps" with "nearest personal maps" so this will create some kind of intelligent menu which will really guess your needs

Quick map switch has been a mess since day one :). Menion introduced some funky "logic" here to guess which maps I want to see, but it almost never gets it right.

Maps that cover my CURRENT POSITION are ALWAYS more important to me than maps that do not. Locus needs a simple list of those current maps, sorted by scale, like any other gps app or gps hardware.

I want to see

SAT5k-Matterhorn.rmap
SWISSMAP25-Zermatt.rmap
SWISSMAP50-SwitzerlandEast.rmap
KOMPASS50-Switzerland.rmap
SWISSMAP200-Switzerland.rmap
MICHELIN400-Alps.rmap
MICHELIN1000-Europe.rmap
GMAP8-World.rmap

in exactly this order when quickmapswitching on the peak of Matterhorn. I DO NOT want to see any map that does not cover my position, even if it is only ten kilometers away.

PLEASE :)

I do not introduced any funky logic, because there is almost none logic :). Quick map switch was introduced in times, where almost only supported maps were SQLite, and these maps do not have any simple mechanism for defining bounding boxes or some areas ... anyway as in many other areas, Locus has changes and I really understand your concern. So next item on prioritized TODO list ...
