BX-5 D2 Static noise through speakers

Hi guys,

I'm after some help with running my BX-5 D2s. I am experiencing the dreaded "static noise" issue when they are connected to my PC and have searched all over the internet for a solution, but nothing has helped. I was hoping for some help from professionals so I came here.

If anyone is able to try and help me I will explain my issue in more details and list out steps I've already taken.

  • Hello,

    Thanks for posting.

Does the noise level stay the same if you disconnect all audio cables? (connect only the power cable)

If so, it is likely that you're just hearing the noise floor of the studio monitors themselves, especially if both monitors have the same noise level. This does not indicate any problem with your BX5 D2s.

All speakers will have an inherent noise floor. This is often more noticeable with pro audio reference monitors like the BX5s, not only because they more accurately reproduce very high frequency information (unlike typical consumer speakers), but also because you are often in very close proximity to the studio monitors, as opposed to a home theater system for example.

    Hi Dan,

Thank you very much for your reply.

With the audio cables disconnected there is absolutely no noise. The monitors are perfectly quiet.

I do not imagine the issue is with the speakers, your speakers are of too high quality for something like this to happen :)

If you aren't able to help me with this seeing as its nothing to do with the monitors them I completely understand. I was just hoping maybe someone here had a similar issue and has been able to resolve it. I have searched the internet far and wide but to no avail.

  • Oh no, I'll be happy to help! Just need to narrow things down a bit :)

First, a little process of elimination. Connect the audio cables to the speakers, but nothing on the other end. Don't hold the unconnected ends (to avoid hum/buzz from your hands), just let them dangle there. Does the noise occur now?

If not, see if it occurs when you plug it into your source. By the way, what are you connecting them into? (brand/model)

I can look up the info on that device and possibly determine the best means of connecting and gain staging them.

    Thanks!
    • Hi Dan (not sure if you are still working for the company).
similar to dfibunch2001uk, i have static static noise as well as reoccurring humming every 1 to 2 minutes interval, each for about 5 to 10 seconds.

this is happening on 2 setups of mine and only when i connect audio cables to speakers.
i did you suggested steps and just connected the audio cables to the speaker without connecting them on the other end and that is when sounds starts.

      first setup:
      MacBook pro
      Komplete Audio 6 (audio interface)
      M-Audio BX8 D2

      second setup
      Mac Pro (trash can model)
      Apogee Duet 2 (audio interface)
      M-Audio BX5 Carbon

Thank you Dan, that's really nice of you.

I've done the things you asked and also I'll give you some info on things I've tried.

    1) Audio cables connected to the monitors with no source = no static, perfect quiet

With audio cables connected to the monitors:

    2) Front PC headphone port as source = static
    3) Rear PC soundcard port as source = static
    4) Smartphone as source = no static
    5) Laptop as source = very very low hum but not the same kind of static

I do believe the issue will be with my PC but I'm trying to work out whether I need to replace the whole motherboard (as the soundcard is an on board one) or if I can simply purchase a soundcard, in which case I am open to recommendations.

I use these monitors simply for producing music from time to time on my PC and to just listening to music. Nothing special.

I can get the mobo/soundcard info if that helps but I've updated the drivers, messed around the BIOS numerous times and still nothing. I'm a software engineer so I am comfortable with those steps, its once it gets down to hardware that I struggle :P

BX-5 D2 Static noise through speakers

Hi: I'm sorry for your case, but mine is worst.

Like you, I need some help with the running of one new BX-5 D2. I am experiencing a terrible all kind of loud noises that grows sudenly and apears each two or tree minutos. it sounds when is connected and disconected from the audio cables, away from lamps, bulbos, leeds and away from magnetic fields. I ask help to M-audio, but nothing has happend cause they do not want. They allways send you to visit the list of technical service but there is none in my country and the warranty only works in Usa and more will be the cost for the sending and back from there, than the monitor cost original. If there's not solution with the help of anybody I will send the monitor to the garbage, where it belongs.
I suggest to everybody stay away from M-audio BX5 D2.

  • Hi, I'm looking for the answer at the moment as well! My theory for my own case is that it may have to do with the graphics card. When I play mp3's, not really any noise. But mp4's, other videos, there is. And I noticed it picks up even worse when I'm playing a game on my desktop.

  • This is disgusting! 2 years and no solution! M-Audio I have bought these speakers for a lot of money expecting quality, and I can't even listen to music loud because I start hearing the static! I can't show off the quality if my speakers can't sound louder than my headphones on maximum volume!

  • I managed to fix mine using this item:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

Was really skeptical it was going to work but it's done the job very well. Of course, you may have a different issue to what mine was. Mine used to pop really loud whenever my house heating came on (very strange I know) which I narrowed down to a surge in the circuits.

The above item balances the signal going to the speakers so it doesn't create the interference sound. May be worth researching or giving it a shot, good luck!
