I’m frustrated

CTRL49 random MIDI disconnects over USB

I've been having an issue where my CTRL49--plugged directly into my 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Sierra--frequently drops its connection.

I can't reliably reproduce the problem. It happens with various plugins (e.g. Velvet), often when switching from, say, VIP in standalone, then quitting, then opening Live or Cubase.

I have to go to OS X's MIDI devices and refresh, then it works.

Not fun, and it's the only keyboard I have (or have ever had) that does this.

Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hey John,

    Thanks for posting!

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the CTRL49! If you're experiencing disconnections, let's first remove the driver from your computer so we can reinstall it. The CTRL49's installer utility will also allow you to uninstall the driver. That can be downloaded here:

    M-Audio CTRL49 Driver - OS X

Run the .dmg file to mount the installer then run M-Audio CTRL49 MIDI Uninstaller in the window that appears. Follow the prompts until the driver is removed. When that has completed, let's restart your computer.

When your computer has restarted, mount the installer again and this time run the installer itself. When that has completed, test your CTRL49's connection with an instance of VIP standalone and VIP as a plugin to verify whether you experience dropouts.

Try that and let me know what the results are!

    Hey Nick!

That seemed to work! I've been in and out of different hosts, VIP standalone, and standalone versions of synths (e.g. Arturia stuff) with no issues for a good hour now.

Slightly embarrassed that my troubleshooting method of "just reinstall it" didn't come to mind, especially since I went to 10.1.2 as an upgrade with VIP stuff already installed.

So, lesson learned: if you upgrade your OS, reinstall drivers.

    Thanks!

  • I have the same issue with mine CTRL49, and I have tried the above solution, but I still got randomly dropped notes when I’m playing.

After almost 2 weeks with problems I’m about to give up and return the keyboard.
    • Hello Mikael,

I see you've posted here and there regarding your CTRL49. It is possible that there is a hardware issue with your controller. I would advise you to contact the technical support team to work with a representative directly. Warranty and non-warranty claims cannot be handled here on the forum but I can point you in the right direction! Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

      • Submit a Warranty or Service Inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the M-Audio Support Page. Select Warranty or Service Inquiry from the drop down menu. This will not require a support code.

      or

      • For faster support, call or email your nearest Support Office or International Distributor. Select your country to find the nearest office.

Make sure to reference or link to this thread to help out the support team.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions.
    • That would not be necessary, I’ve returned both my CTRL49 and my Oxygen61 IV yesterday. The Oxygen61 was okay if it wasn’t for the inability to change the Pad notes to whatever I like.
