Driver problems with Axiom AIR 32 Mini

Windows 10 x64
Laptop (tried two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports)

First attempt of making it work: tried plug&play. No luck, "Device Descriptor Request Failed" with code 43. Tried different ports, still doesn't want to work. Allright, downloaded the Windows 10 driver. Yay. Seems to work, appears in all my DAWs (tried FL Studio 12.2, Pro Tools 12 and Cubase 6.5) as MIDI in/out and HyperControl. Fine. Knobs work, pads, work, everything fine.

Now. Gone through manual, found how to map transport buttons to MMC there and set it up. Didn't work in FL Studio at all. In fact, it didn't work in any of the three DAWs. However, after installing HyperControl profile for Cubase, transport works and Volume/Pan knob modes work as intended.

However, noticed that once I start playing a bit heavier (some chords + a note for bassline, that's like 4-5 at a time after several seconds the connection drops. The device itself still lights up (sustain/edit and +/- buttons), but it just forgets the thing. To recover it, I need to unplug and plug again, then go to settings and disable then re-enable the device. Needless to say, it's super frustrating. Moreover, since a few days I noticed it triggers BSOD with SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on MAudioAxiomAIRMini32.sys if I plug the keyboard after starting my DAW.

Here's what it looks like in MIDI-OX. Notes all fine, then it just drops with no clue of what happened.

Can this be a driver problem? Should I remove everything and try going class-compilant again somehow? Or maybe it's a cable/port problem? Help!

  • UPDATE: Tried uninstalling everything, on one port there was "Unrecognised USB Device", uninstalled it. Tried another port, it found Axiom AIR Mini 32 device with a yellow triangle warning. Uninstalled it as well, checked to remove drivers as well. Now the fun part. Unplugged and plugged again, it found "Axiom A.I.R. Mini32" by itself (note the dots between AIR, that's something new" with no warning. Quickly fired up FL Studio to see what changed. No BSOD, doesn't seem to lose connection so far even with crazy complicated playing. Still to check are MMC controls and HyperControl. But this shows promise. For people who're having the same issue: it might be not the cable, try other port and uninstalling.

  • UPDATE 2: Too early to call it done it seems. Still loses connection from time to time, but no BSODs. And FL shows "MIDI devices have changed, refreshing" so it's just a matter of unplug -> wait 10-20s -> plug back again. Still, in Cubase that's opening settings, disable-enable, which is kinda annoying.
