Firewire 410 and OS X 10.8.2

Brian Keith Dalton My Firewire 410 is dead after the 10.8.2 OS X update. Can someone at M-Audio please tell me if you're working on a driver? Or, have you decided to stop supporting the product? I'd like to know so that I can make a decision about buying a new audio/midi interface. Thanks.

  • I checked all places where I could find the HZ and put everything to 48. Same as before, maybe more grit. Not funny.
    • Re:M-410 operating into WIN8 O.S. I have been experimenting using two separate sources of 'sync' into the M-410. Both work. I have (1) a Sony DAT PCM-R300 machine and (2) a Tascam CD-RW700. Both machines have SPDIF and Optical IN/OUT. When connected to the M-410 Input, the M-410 works as it should - using 'External Sync' in its setup. I do not know what the sample rate of the Tascam is, but the Sony is set to 48KHz. I can 'A/B' these two machines so that either provides the 'sync' - and both still make the M-410 work. Ergo - get an external Sync source if you are having problems with the M-410. You can get one on e-bay, I imagine, much cheaper than ditching the M-Audio!! Try it! Just make certain that the CD player or DAT player has either SPDIF or Optical Output. In test I find that the DAT sync gives a cleaner sound without distortion so maybe the Tascam is set to 44.1KHz - but, unlike the Sony DAT, it is not a selectable option. So do bear that in mind. Michael
    • BTW, my WIN8 O.S. is 64bit

turn the Firewire to 44.1 then back to 48

then check Audio MIDI set up (Utilities folder) and make sure all devices, in and out, are set to 48...

    hang on a minute...

actually Audio MIDI Setup says the 410 is set to 44.1 (in and out) BUT the 410 interface says it is set to 48
and I just did a short session with no problems!?

Maybe I don't know what am talking about? (very likely)
Or maybe U should try this too?
Weird! Thought I had it all 48.

    It is alchemy after all.

AND check your project is set to HZ as well

And don't forget to cross your appendages and stroke your lucky rabbit's foot.

  • I’m happy mine is working
Ignore the lock symbol (it doesn't seem to lock anything). Just click on the up and down buttons under hardware/sample rate. Careful, as sometimes these little buttons seem to jump 2. Then hit the reset button under settings on the right.
    • Thanks, Rob, I'll try that again. Before my last comment I had tried changing from 48 by these buttons - even by clicking on the '48' itself - but nothing budged... Ought it to be adjusted from boot-up before other progs are opened?
    • When I set it to external sync source the sample rate goes red and the lock unlocks. I change it back to internal and it goes green and the lock locks, yet I can still change the HZ. Maybe one of us should read the manual?

I know nothing about PCs so if there is some master sound control panel for sound I'd make sure that it matched HZ. Maybe U need a PC expert?

I reached out to M-Audio and they said Avid now owns the Firewire 410. Avid's support seems impossible to find any info on. I think this is a lost cause. On my new Mac Pro (10.8.2) the FW410 will record for about 2-3 minutes in Logic or Adobe Audition before it begins to generate nothing but static. When I stop recording the inputs go dead until I change the sample rate or clock source. Once I change that and then change it back I can typically use the recording for another minute or two before there's an issue again. Basically, it's unusable. I've tried different drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling... I'm at a loss here.

  • Yes, that's almost exactly my experience, but I actually managed to sing two demos yesterday!

My solution was to go to the M-Audio Firewire preference panel and try to change the sample rate. It changes back to 44,1 when it's locked to Sync Source: internal, but it does the trick. I was lucky and got more minutes than you. And occasionally I even unplugged & hot plugged the 410 again.

This didn't work before 10.8., any hot-plugging or unplugging of any FireWire was a no-no since it screwed everything with M-audio big time... So, at least this cloud has some silver lining...

But for sure, if I win the lottery I'll go for UAD...

    Hi Brian/everyone,
I sincerely apologize for the experience you've had lately concerning your 410/new driver compatibility.

The Firewire 410 is an older M-Audio product that Avid discontinued long before inMusic acquired M-Audio. There will not be any new drivers developed for the 410 moving forward. You can try testing Profire series drivers with the 410 but M-Audio cannot guarantee successful operation- as we will not be testing/supporting the 410 with any new drivers in the future. I hope this is a clear answer for you and helps with your decission. Take care.

    Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the information. This is very unfortunate as the 410 has always been a solid piece of equipment for me and I'm not in a situation where I can downgrade my OS for this. I'm sad that I'll have to look elsewhere for equipment, but I understand these things happen. Thanks for the response - at least now we have a solid answer!

I think the important point to take away from this is that we are no longer customers, and I think we ceased to be customers once the transaction was made - which is why the drivers are so old and outdated not only for the 410, but other devices as well, and why it's taken so long to get any kind of official response.

And that's why I'm taking my business elsewhere.. Not because I feel stung because my 410 is now a brick, but because I really couldn't be confident that if I purchased another device from M-Audio, that it wouldn't suffer the same fate.

The sad part is that I probably wouldn't feel that way had an announcement been made months ago that the 410 was no longer going to be supported. I'd more than likely just have dropped some cash on the latest interface.

    Ho hum.

UPDATE: Although M-Audio will not be testing/supporting new firewire drivers with the 410 moving forward, our resident community manager/tech ninja @DMorris has a work-around that might help some of you trying to use your 410 with Mountain Lion.

    1) Bypass Apple gatekeeper

Our brand-mates at Numark have streamlined directions posted on how to bypass gatekeeper here.

    2) Download the 10.7.4 driver

Again, this is not an official M-Audio qualified option, but if any of you have success with this work-around please report back here. Thanks @DMorris!

So I too have a useless Firewire 410 device if anyone wants it! But I just setup my shiny new FOCUSRITE product and it works flawlessly with 10.8.2 and sounds great!

As someone who has purchased a number of M-Audio products over the years, you've now just lost a good customer forever. I won't be buying any more products from you again for fear you'll stop supporting the product while it's still useful. So much for your forced upgrade strategy. And really, how resource intensive would it be to update your drivers? Just stupid customer loyalty strategy.

One simple work around might be available to some. Partition your hard drive, call it Snow Leopard, install SL on that partition along with Logic, the 410 driver and anything else you like to use. Obviously you have to have the space on the drive, for the basic install of Logic and SL I used only a 25 Gb partition (which is plenty but no 50 gig full install of Logic unless you've got a very big drive with lots of partition space).

Now, when you want to run your studio, boot your computer while holding down the 'option' key and choose the "drive" (partition) with SL and Logic on it. Done.

  • I’m sympathetic to M-Audio
OK, got the new iMac, OS X 10.8.2

Browsed through the M-Audio FW4109 downloads to get 1.10.2 not .3!

Added the Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter to my 800 to 400 adapter to my FW410.

    Worked first go!

If you're partitioning drives, etc. There's something basically wrong with your set up. Check your Audio MIDI Set Up (utilities), run Onyx or some other system cleaner.

If there's no blue light: Make sure the cables are working (e.g. unplug the FW410 and plug in a firewire drive) because 8 times out of 10 it's a bad cable.

But don't blame M-Audio because the FW410 just keeps going.

And post back here if you get it working.

    • I agree 100%. If M-Audio / Avid / inMusic can't take better care of their customer base by providing simple driver updates, let's all take our business elsewhere. There are hundreds of competing products out there. I think the Firewire 410 was a very solid piece of equipment when it came out and it still has lots of life left, but the fools at "M-Audio / Avid / inMusic and their disregard to their struggling musician customers and their lack of support (regardless how old), is the type of company we should avoid. Getting a driver updated is trivial. I'm a software developer and it would cost them very, very little to have the driver updated, especially offshore (e.g. India.) Shame on them for focusing only on pushing new products down our throats. I'm never spending a penny with this company again and will preach this to all my fellow musicians.

my FW410 is working as a basic sound card, its just useless when im using logic as soon as i press play on a track i got clicks and hops, thats why its a stylish paper weight
i get better response with my imac internal board
as far as my set up its a fresh install of 10.8.2
i ́ve tried all the drivers and workarounds i could find on the web
the FW410 works fine on my BOOTCAMP partition with older drivers, on my OSX partition is a paper weight
making a new partiton with an older OSX isn't practical
the FW410 its still a good piece of hardware its only company policies and greed to make money that leeds to discontinuing support to FW410

Gave up with M audio firewire410. It always worked fine on 10.7 but just sat there blinking stupidly on 10.8. Got myself an Akai EIE pro....sounds better too! Shame about M Audio, but they let us all down badly. If they had at least posted up practical workarounds in good time to warn all us Mac users, we might not have got so pissed off. But they didn't, and it does imply a lack of concern for their customers. Bye bye M Audio...

OK, Ryan we got the message, it took a while but finally it's clear that we are orphans of M-Audio's "customer support", especially students of music with low income.

So, what is the procedure to get rid of the M-Audio FW410's sound card in an ecologically, friendly way?

This site does not say anything about it.

Can you specify how and where to do it?

    • Good post Cliff.

      I agree 100%.
    • As Cliff states, "Personally, I won't buy or recommend an M-Audio, Avid or InMusic product again (as a customer, I don't really care who is to blame, all 3 of these companies are directly involved). I'll recount this story and instead recommend that people invest in a company with a proven positive track record in supporting its customers until a product is truly end of line (i.e. superseded through technological advancement)."

  • I upgraded to 10.8.2 not realizing the 410 would not be supported.

I think 10.7 is a great OS, Logic 9.1.7 runs fine on it and my 410 works great with them.

If you have a spare drive bay, grab a small fast drive and put 10.7, Logic, the last available driver for the 410 and everything else I need on it.

Boot up holding the option key and choose that drive and you are back in business.

(I just partitioned the drive on my Macbook Pro but if I had a spare drive bay on my desktop then even better, good luck)

I just downloaded the most recent driver from M-Audio (for Lion 10.7.3), installed it, and restarted as required by the installer, and it still wasn't working. I want to give my two cents to this topic.
I had the same problem as all of you here with the FireWire410, OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion and that nerve wrecking noise this combination produces. I call it the M-Robo-effect :-P

I tried the solution DMorris suggested a few months ago.
With the FW410 1.10.3 driver the M-Robo came and went every few minutes. Switching from 44100kHz to 48000kHz solved the problem but only for a few minutes. Then I had to switch back and forth but the noise came back again after a while. I now tried the 1.10.5 driver which only appears compatible for the FireWire Solo. Follow these steps and I hope you’ll get rid of this annoying glitch. Gatekeeper should be turned off before you start, who needs that anyway.

    1. Download the FireWire Solo 1.10.5 driver for OS X 10.7.4 on M-Audio’s site

    2. Uninstall the 1.10.3 driver using the uninstaller contained in the old FireWire_OSX_1_10.3.dmg which you shouldn’t have deleted from your drive. If you had deleted it, download the 1.10.3.dmg again and use this one.

    3. Restart your Mac

    4. Install the 1.10.5 driver

    5. Shutdown your Mac

    6. Connect the 410 and boot that sucker again

    7. Open M-Audio control panel and switch the sample rate to 48000 or do as I did and switch the sample rate only inside your DAW ( in my case Ableton ) this switched also the sample rate in the M-Audio control panel. Don’t know if only Ableton does this, but it worked for me this way.

    8. Try your DAW with the 410 and enjoy your old trusty :-/ audio interface again.

Big thanx to DMorris for the solution. I got the 410 few weeks ago on ebay for cheap and I was ready to sell it again.
So far I've managed to play for about 5 hours today and nothing went bananas as before. I even lowered the buffer size of Ableton to 64 samples and still everything rolls perfect. Try it and hopefully this helps. I will report back in a few days and tell you how the FW410 behaves.

  • I just bought a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6. It blows the 410 out of the water. Read the reviews at sweetwater.com. Audio quality wise, it can hold it's own againts RME or other high end interfaces. It's USB class-compliant, meaning true plug and play and no drivers needed on Mac. It uses Cirrus Logic DA converters and the audio quality is pristine. I hear things I never heard before. The unit itself is German engineered and solidly built to last with an aluminium design, similar to the build quality of a Macbook Pro.It's built like a tank. It's truly awesome. No more wasting time with M-Audio drivers and crackly audio. It's also bundled with a nice selection of Native Instruments software (limited versions of Guitar Rig, Kontakt, Traktor). Highly recommended. My 410 is now a useless doorstop or paperweight.

  • Well, bummer. I too have a firewire 410. Thankfully I have not yet upgraded to Mountain lion but I have a Core i5 Mac mini with 10.7 on it now. I guess I will keep it that way for a while. I would really like to upgrade.

Hopefully Avid will reconsider this in the future.

  • Seems like this has been solved. But some users users will struggle for a while since the newest driver isn't listed on the firewire 410 driver list...

  • Oh that blows. I love my 410 but now I have a brick. M-Audio I understand you want to move on, but lots of us still love this product.
Come on guys, it's just a driver! Plleeeassssseeee!

    • Hi CMeadows, thanks for the reply. So as Avid owns it, does that mean it's no longer your baby to nurture? If not and M-Audio still have a stake in it, how about open-sourcing the existing software and drive so some else can take a crack? Would that be a possibility since no one but us customers want this orphan? Cheers ;-)
    • I don't think AVID understands what is at stake here, if they buy M-Audio they need to take care of M-Audio customers or suffer the consequences of being a bad company without a good name. If this continues AVID will go down as a bad choice for products. Are any higher-ups at AVID aware of this issue? Or is this just being addressed by office goons without decision power.?

  • So not too sure if people are still having problems with this here's my experience:

So I have an Early 2011 MBP running 10.8.4 - just upgraded to use Logic Pro X.

So my 410 is obviously just using the drivers from the previous OS version (10.7).

Plugged it in and worked fine... but audio inputs were coming out extremely distorted - kind of like a bitcruncher/ring modulator effect. Sounded cool but not for a clean electric!!

Anyway kinda followed a suggestion above - went into settings and the m-audio firewire settings. Changed the sampling rate from 44 to 48 and back to 44. That seemed to fix it! I was able to do it with Logic open and it worked fine on the fly.

    Hope that helps....

  • I'm not sure why but my new iMac 27" running the latest mac os and my 410 is working just fine. I'm using thunderbolt adaptor to my mac and haven't skipped a beat since I was using it on my old macbook pro 2009 running 10.7. I didn't even know there was a problem until I came here. I'm using it with Logic X, final cut X after effects etc with no issues at all.

  • No way? Really? Okay, am going to test it out on my 27" at work. I'm using it on my old MacPro and it's always been problematic.

Yep - after updating my OSX to 10.8.4 my fw1814 is apparently dead.
Even tried on a win xp machine but nothing.
Current UK tech support have not offered any useful answers after a week and have gone dead quiet when I told them my unit is a pre Avid lifetime warranty item!
I have bought several m-audio items previously and even considered several new purchases, but it seems m-audio's once respected name is now dirt in the industry!
    To be avoided!

    Hi Craig,

The 1814 is the property of Avid and is considered an M-Audio legacy product. M-Audio, under new ownership, will not be developing drivers for the 1814 moving forward. We will continue to host resources for legacy products on M-Audio.com but will no longer support ongoing development.

    • These devices do not belong to M-Audio. They are Avid products. M-Audio doesn't create drivers for another companies products.
    • Funny as my box has m-audio written on the front (and the top for that matter) - if you want to dispense with the legacy and support you should dispense with the name!

  • Wow, you little kids have no idea what you're doing...Blaming m-audio because apple breaks drivers with almost every update in one way or another? 'open source the driver'!? HAHAHAHA

You kids don't even know how to bypass gatekeeper and find the idea of uninstalling previous driver data (a common apple problem...) outlandish, there's no way in hell you can contribute anything meaningful to the source.

Hey children, maybe get a real OS (you know, one that isn't targeting a userbase under the age of 18), learn how to use your damned hardware and stop whining.
