I’m frustrated

Keyrig 49 pitch bend and volume controls inseparable.

I have a Keyrig 49. One day the pitch bend wheel decided to start controlling both volume and pitch bend and the volume slider did nothing. I have tried everything on multiple softwares. Even tried reassigning the midi controls. Nothing works and this problem has dogged my working process for months. I noticed that this is a known issue but have never seen any kind of response or solution except "I think its broken". Which is not acceptable because it's happened to so many people. I think some Keyrig49's are faulty and I would appreciate if someone could reply with a more definite response. For example, have any of your service people ever had to manually repair this problem? What can I do?

  • Hi Jachin,

Thank you for contacting M-Audio. I'll be glad to help you. The KeyRig 49 resets each time its powered on, so if you are having trouble with the pitch and volume there is nothing to reset.
    It would need a repair.

How long have you had the KeyRig 49? Where are you located? What operating system are you using? Have you tested the KeyRig 49 with MIDI Monitor or MIDI-Ox for verification?

  • I am having this exact same problem. I bought the KeyStudio 49 largely for the pitch bend and other such features my old keyboard lacks, and I can't use the wheel without the volume going with it.

  • Hello Jake,

Thanks for posting and I'm sorry you're having trouble!

Are you on a Windows or Mac computer?

There is a MIDI diagnostic software we can use to see what data the wheel is sending. This will tell us if it's the keyboard or something else.

  • I have the answer.

I opened the unit and started troubleshooting. With a digital voltmeter, I took readings of the pitch wheel potentiometer as well as the modulation wheel and the volume pot. I discovered that the wiper of the 10kOhm volume potentiometer was not connected to the wire and plastic connecter that meets the main board.

Sure enough, I opened the potentiometer by bending the little arms on the outer chromed case and exposed the innards of the slider. Sure enough, the little brass or copper spring fingers that make contact with the resistor strips on each side had not been making contact. I bent them downward and reassembled the switch by bending the case fingers back in place and whalaa! Works fine!!

So, if you are not comfortable with getting inside the switch, you might be able to find a 10kOhm fader style potentiometer at Radio Shack and it may fit the holes in the board. If not, you can eliminate the board entirely and just find a small piece of PCB board, mount any 10kOhm slider to it and cut the pigtail off the old board and make the connections to the three slider connections (wiper and each end of the fader's strip). You could even drill a 3/8 inch hole in the top plastic piece and change the slider for a rotary pot and knob.... Just use any 10K pot (I believe the taper is linear not audio, but I am not sure)

  • Hello. I have the keyrig 49 since 2010. What is my problem? the pitch bend keeps moving himself. My DAW receive midi signal when nothing is touched on the keyrig. When i pull down the pitch bend, and keep it down, midi signal not received anymore, and this is good. But when I release it to normal, keeps jiggling(i don't know how to say it) keeps moving up and down fastly. Pitch bend data should only be sent when the control is moved. Anyway, probably i must upgrade to a new one with aftertouch. And not the m-audio's anymore

  • I’m anxious
How did you fix it in the end Jachin?? I've got the same issue and it's proving to be a very serious one.

Hi.. the problem has never gone away. I have been considering following Tim Richter's solution, which involves opening up the keyboard and bending little metal bits around those sliders. I probably will be forced to do so someday. Meanwhile, I know to avoid M-Audio from now on. They have cheap stuff, but cheap stuff breaks, and they have never replied or helped out in any way.

  • I’m thankful
It's served me well for 4.5 years, but now I'll just have to throw my Keyrig 49 away, and get another keyboard.

Thanks for the feedback, you have no idea how much I've tried to fix this!! Now at least I understand it's not a software problem.

  • I had the same problem and managed to fix it.

I simply disconnected the pitch bender and the other wheel wire from the "motherboard" and replaced it with volume sliders wire.

This solution fixes the volume problem with the cost of not being able to use the 2 wheels. For me it was a good trade-off, but for some of you it may not be.

The volume slider wire connector is smaller than the other two wheel connector so put the volume slider wire where the pitch bender would be (at one side). It doesn't fit perfectly, but it stays connected.

The volume is now good and pitch is not affected. I don't really know how it actually works, I just screwed around with the wires.

    I hope it helps someone.

  • thanks to everyone who spotted this - mine started doing this mid-soundcheck and it has been driving me up the wall ... time for some new kit I think.
