  • Hi,

    Thanks for posting!

When a keyboard cuts out like that after only a few seconds to a minute, it's usually a problem with the USB cable or a USB port.

Please make sure to continue to try different cables and to test different USB ports on your computer. USB 3 ports can often cause problems like this so make sure to avoid those. You should also avoid any USB hubs or USB cable extensions as well. Test with a different computer if necessary.

Lastly, try resetting your MIDI Studio:

    I hope this helps!

  • I have a 1st gen Keystation mini 32, and cannot get anything to work on my 2015 Macbook Pro, 10.11.2. Tried in Logic, Garageband and Ableton. The keyboard will show in OS Audio Midi Setup and show up in Ableton MIDI settings.

I know the keyboard works, I plugged it into an older Macbook, 10.8, and the Keystation worked right away in Garageband.

Cannot get anyone on the phone, cannot get support code from product registration. Please help.

    • Nothing from the keyboard with the MIDI Monitor.

I am using USB 3 ports. Are you saying these will not work with USB 3? Do I have to get a new keyboard now?
    • When this keyboard was released, 3.0 didn't exist or was very limited. 3.0 is just now starting to be widespread. So, as a USB 2.0 device, I can't guarantee that it will work properly with those ports and it seems very likely that's the problem you are running into. To be honest, this is the only M-Audio keyboard that I have seen have trouble with 3.0 ports.

One more option you can try is using a USB 2.0 hub. We generally don't recommend this if avoidable, but I have seen it properly adapt 2.0 devices to 3.0 ports in the past.

      I hope this helps!

  • Is a proper solution planned (drivers, firmware update etc.)? Just bought this keyboard and it's completely unusable. I'm on the latest MacBook Pro + latest OS X. Obviously, I don't have any USB 2.0 ports and not planning to buy any. I got the keyboard because it's compact and portable, and the idea of having to carry around an extra USB hub requiring external power source is completely atrocious! USB 3.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so it beats me how you managed to engineer something that actually isn't.
If there are no plans/no way to solve the problem, please specify in the product description that it doesn't work with the modern hardware. Or even better, stop producing it. Continuing to sell it this way is completely unfair and deceitful to the customers.
I do hope however that the problem will be solved with software.

      Hi Kirill,

Please test this with a different operating system. This may not be an issue with 3.0 ports in general, just the way this OS handles the ports. A quick google search of El Capitan and USB 3.0 ports will show users with all types of products having similar issues due to changes in the OS. I think in particular it may be related to specific USB cards in the computers.

The Keystation Mini 32 is working perfectly fine with USB 3.0 ports and OS X 10.10 here.

Regardless, you always want to try and use any USB 2.0 devices with USB 2.0 ports. 3.0 ports SHOULD be backwards compatible, but it's up to the OS how this is processed and unfortunately this is not always the case. Clearly, if it works with 3.0 ports on one system and not the next, it's not the device or the 3.0 port, it's the processing behind it.

Make sure to go through the tests above:

      1) Delete and reinstall your MIDI drivers (if there are any)

      2) Reconfigure your MIDI Studio

      3) Test with a MIDI Monitor:

Open MIDI Monitor with all other programs closed. In the "Sources" section, check the boxes for your controller's ports.
Now MIDI Monitor will list all incoming MIDI Messages. This will help confirm if the controller itself is responding properly.

      4) Test with different USB cables and ports.

      5) Test with a different computer and/or operating system.

      I hope this helps!

  • Perhaps I didn't clarify exactly what I'm experiencing. The keyboard stops recognizing any key presses a few minutes after it was plugged in (the lights are still on). MIDI Monitor stops showing any input when this happens.
I tried resetting SMC — no changes. I removed all 3rd party MIDI drivers (there was one, with the exception of MIDI Monitor) - no changes.

I tried a different cable — the keyboard wasn't even detected by my laptop. But the cable I'm using now comes with the keyboard, so if it can be considered to be faulty then the whole product is.

I'm pretty sure it will work with an older OS or on an older device — but I have no plans on change any of those. I will test tonight with an older MacBook (but running 10.11) and report the results here. The only other devices I have access to are all modern Macs with USB 3.0 ports and 10.11 installed.
Yes, the USB driver stack on OS X 10.11 has been rewritten — but according to what I could find online, it's now less tolerant of devices not adhering to the spec, which this keyboard seems to be an example of. Also, worth noting, I have a number of other USB devices (including two other keyboards, one of them also from M-Audio) and an external audio interface —experienced no issues with them working on USB 3.0 ports.

  • An update for OS X just became available on my machine which does specify “ Fixes an issue that caused USB audio devices to disconnect ” — going to install it now, let's hope this will solve my issues!

The update didn't help. I have purchased a USB hub which seems to have solved the problem. Unlike I thought, it doesn't have to be connected to a power outlet. Not perfect, but works.

  • I FIXED IT ! (At least worked for me)

I bought the maudio keystation mini 32 and i had the same issues logic pro x 10.3 didn't recognise it and i searched the internet for a solution so i followed everything and again nothing. So i found something about usb 3.0 and usb 2.0 that this midi it's not compatible with usb 3 or something like that.

so i grabbed a belkin usb hub that i had in a very old drawer and when i plugged the midi on the hub and the hub to a usb 3.0 port worked flawlessly

I attached the hub that i used and worked in logic pro x I DIDN'T SEE IF THIS TRICK WORKS ON LIVE OR ANOTHER DAW!

I don't know why so much struggle for midi keyboard. please maudio do something about it

    sorry for my english

    Take care ;)
