I’m frustrated

M-Audio Code 49 : Setting "omni" for sustain pedal MIDI channel seems not working.

Hello all,
I just bought a Code 49 that I use as "keyboard extension" with a Roland Juno Stage for live performances.
For playing music I don't use a VST on computer, only the Code 49 and the Roland Synth, connected by a MIDI cable from the OUT of the Code to the IN of the Juno Stage.
I've chosen this model because it's apparently the only one (as far as I know and in this range of price) which provides at least 2 freely assignable split zones.
For this I'm totally satisfied and even more with the very good response and playability of the keyboard (I didn't expect so good!) and the ease of presets programming with the PC editor.

But... I'd need that the sustain pedal sends on all channels, or on all zones channels.
In other words, I'd need that the sustain pedal acts for any key of the keyboard, whever it's splitted or not and whatever the midi channel.

When setting the sustain pedal midi channel, I see that in addition to "global, 1-16, zone 1-4" it's possible to chose "omni" (not mentionned in the manual) which looks like exactly what I want.
Unfortunately, this setting seems to have absolutely no effect : No sustain at all.
When I press the pedal the display reads SUSXXX (XXX reads different numerical values depending on the key I've just played) but no sustain on any zone.

I've updated the Code's firmware to v1.2.3, I use Preset editor for Windows v1.0.6, and everything seems to work properly.
There's obviously no hardware problem because everything works fine if I set any other option (global, 1-16, zone).

Is there something I don't understant in the principle of "omni"?
Or is there a firmware problem?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my random english, I'm french.

  • Hey Pierre,

    Thanks for posting!

The Omni setting will allow you to send data on all channels regardless of the Zone you are using. In the image below, I have configured a Code 25 (a Code 49 will work the same way) to send a sustain control message on all channels:

Try configuring your editor software like in the image above. After you have sent the preset to the Code, you can test that it is sending on all channels with this software, MIDI-OX:

This video will get you set up quickly for Input Monitoring in MIDI-OX:

I hope this helps you! Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Dear Nick.
    Hello.
Can you check that with connecting midi port?
I wonder that can on only Connecting USB port.
    Sorry for my bad english..
    Thanks.

  • Hi Nick,
Thank you very much for your help.

The first answer (between the lines) is that I had well understood the way Omni works! :)

The configuration you show in the image is exactly what I did on my Code 49.
This, with Jiho's post in addition, makes me worried about what could be the second answer:
Would it work ONLY for USB MIDI...?

Indeed, as I told you, for playing music I use only the 5 pins MIDI ports to connect my Code 49 to my Juno Stage.
Testing wirh USB MIDI, as you suggest, says nothing about what's happen with the 5 pins MIDI interface.

Unfortunately, I'm currently totally unlucky because my Code 49 broke down yesterday evening (purchased 2 weeks ago...) with a small sizzle and a bit of smoke outing below the display.
So I carried it back to the music store this evening and I hope I'll can test again in about 10 days, if everything works fine...

Anyway I'll keep you in touch when I'll get my keyboad back, but if it's what I'm afraid of: Why having limited the MIDI Omni feature to the USB interface?

    Thanks again,
    Pierre.

  • I've bought a code 61 and have the same problem. The pedal does not seem to work at all in OMNI when I use MIDI out. Did you find a solution?

  • Have any of you found the solution for omni-sustain via the 5pin MIDI port?
