M-Audio Code Live Performance

I am looking to buy a new MIDI keyboard controller and I was looking at the M-Audio Code. I wish to know whether there are delays if it is used as a live instrument, connected with a laptop and an external AMP to produce live music.

I've been using Code 61 live with MacBook Pro running NI Kontakt, Ivory and other NI stand alones with great success. I'm also using an Apogee Duet USB as D/A and it sounds awesome. The Code is a bit tricky to program but the User Manual is quite comprehensive. I've run into a couple of programming eccentricities but have managed to find workarounds. It seems that there isn't a way to disable Zone program changes when switching presets and I haven't been able to assign Sustain to more than one MIDI channel at a time. But other than that, excellent! All of the pads and controllers are programmable so one can build some cool control presets. And I'm assuming you mean latency when you ask about delays, and the answer is no. Response is great.

  • HI David,

    Thanks for posting!

The response from the Code has been pretty positive and I don't believe I have come across any instances of latency. At least nothing that pointed to the Code as a problem. Usually, MIDI latency, is more a problem with your computer and OS than it is with your MIDI peripherals.

If you're not familiar already, I'd recommend to check out our optimization guide for advice on managing latency in your system:

    I hope this helps!
    • I think you are right, any latency would be from the software. I use FL Studio and when I use a normal USB QWERTY keyboard I experience delays, but I think MIDI keyboards work in a different way, reducing latency from the driver. I know I should not compare normal keyboard to a MIDI keyboard but that is all I have right now. I was considering Ableton Live as a software.
