M-audio CODE w/ Ableton Live MackieControl Setup Issue

Just got my brand new M-audio CODE midi keyboard and for some strange reason it forgets the settings in the midi preferences almost immediately, according to the setup guide by M-audio this keyboard needs to be setup as a Mackie Control Surface but it won't remember the setting for Mackie Control Surface. Below are screenshots of my Live preferences and the M-audio setup preferences.

I'm hoping someone has some insight on using Mackie Control with Ableton and why it can't remember the settings. I've returned it once for a new one and have the same issue so it's not the keyboard....

Any help with this would be great

  • Hi,

    Thanks for posting!

This all looks fine to me and your right in saying it is not an issue with the keyboard. Does the control work ok with these settings?

At what point does Ableton not "remember" these settings? After closing/reopening? after closing this window?

Have you contacted Ableton about this?

  • same problem here. i have the same settings as you (and tried all the others), mackie 'mode' just does not work. I am using ableton 9.5 which i suspect is the problem. i will report back if i find a fix.

does anyone else know a workaround to make the faders and knobs always do a specific function? I don't want to have to use a template project. If i understand what mackie mode does, it should give the knobs on the code49 for example, control over whichever macros are available (or unavailable) in the active / selected track. (the DAW treats it as a controller interface rather than a simple midi device?)

the same would go for the faders, mackie mode (when it worked for all of 30 seconds for me) automatically assigned the master fader to the master and the numbered channels would ALWAYS represent channel slots 1-8 rather than the audio or midi channels that we can move from slot to slot.

just looking to make the faders and knobs stay in sync with whatever my push is doing. any workarounds appreciated :D

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for reaching out!

Mackie is a control protocol. Like making Ableton and the Code speak the same language so that they're controls line up and make sense. Everything would have a specific function per track: faders control volume faders, encoders control pan, buttons get mute/solo/record etc.

Are you sure that you went through everything to get Mackie up and running? I noticed above that you mention it's plugged into a USB hub. Have you tried without this and with a new cable? Typically that's the problem if you are having trouble connecting, but I also see a few customers forget to put the board in Mackie Mode:

    - Hit the mode buttons until they turn green
    - Hit Edit, hold shift and press the "MACKIE/HUI" key until the screen reads "MACKIE"

If you don't want to use Mackie, your next best option may be to just manually map with CTRL + M. Your faders should then at least follow your tracks if you move them around, but you would have to create a template if you wanted to retain the same mapping across projects.

I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

  • I’m frustrated
Hi I just bought my code 49. I've managed to install ableton and selected the code 49 as my input and output remote/track. But barley half of the buttons are assigned to do anything! Only B2 to E2 are working when I setup a synth and none of the faders or sliders do anything at all. The x/y pad dosent do anything either.

Why isn't anthing working and how do I set it up?
