M Audio Keystation 61es sending wrong midi (permanent sustain and wrong notes played)

Hi,
I have a M Audio Keystation 61es MIDI keyboard and I have a problem. When I press keys, they stay sustained for ever (sound still continues to play after I release keys), also it sometimes plays wrong notes. So basically it sends a bad MIDI.
I tried different softwares , different cables and result was the same.
When I connected the keyboard to my friends laptop, it started acting normal again. After that, when I connected it to my PC, everything was working great. But, few days after that, same problems started again.
Does anybody have a similar problem or advice how to fix it?
MIDI Monitor shows that keyboard is sending a wrong midi. (It shows notes different from those I play).
Thanks for your answers.

  • Hi Mali,

    Thanks for posting!

Do you have a sustain pedal connected to the Keystation? Do the notes continue to sustain if you disconnect it? If not try disconnecting it, holding down the pedal and connecting it again. You could also try leaving it connected, turning off the Keystation, holding down the pedal, and connecting the pedal again.

If the notes are playing incorrectly, check the transpose settings:

    - Press the Advanced button (edit mode will engage)
    - Press the key labeled "Transpose" (edit mode will disengage)
    - Press both the + and - Octave buttons together to reset the transpose settings

Let me know how this goes!

  • Hi Corey,

    Thanx for answer.

I don't use a sustain pedal, never did.
I tried to reset transpose settings and it didn't solve the problem.
Yes, sound is still present when I disconnect the keyboard.

I am trying to figure out why the keyboard started working normally when I've connected it to my friend's laptop, and why it continued to work normally (only for a few days) when I've connected it back to my PC after that.
It's like connection to that laptop had reset something in the keyboard...
I think that figuring out that situation could give a clearer picture of a problem.
    At least, I hope.

  • Hi Mali,

Connecting it to a different computer could not have reset anything in the keyboard. This is very likely software related or it's a poor connection with your computer. What software are you using? Operating system? What operating system is your friend using?

You've tried different USB cables? Different ports on the computer?

  • Hi Corey,

I am using Native Instruments Maschine software (with mk2 mikro hardware), but the keyboard is also acting funny when I try it on NI Kontakt 5 and Lounge Lizzard.
I am using Win 7 Ultmate SP1 64 bit. My friend uses the same operating system.
I have tried different USB cables and ports.

I'll try to reinstall everything next week, and I'll get back to you with details.

    Thanx

  • Hi,

I have reinstalled everything (sound card driver, DAWs...), and the problem is still there.
So, it is definitely problem in keyboard, not softwares.

  • At this point, you'll need to contact our support team to take a closer look and provide service options if necessary. Here are a couple of options that you could choose from:

    • Submit a Warranty or Service Inquiry with our Technical Support team by logging onto the M-Audio Support Page. Select Warranty or Service Inquiry from the drop down menu. This will not require a support code.

  • I'm having the same problem, with increasing frequency. The same symptoms as above happened to me twice last evening, within 15 minutes of each other.

The last time this happened was over a month ago. This has happened maybe 4 times total since the 2 months I've been using it.

Description of event: (usually symptoms start after the keyboard hasn't been touched in several minutes) When I press a key, my synth plays a sustained note. When I press the same key, it will trigger another infinitely sustained note, or transpose the pitch. The only way to end the sound coming from the synth was to turn off the keyboard, then turn off/on the synth.

Power cycling the keyboard used to fix it, but as I said this issue happened twice last evening. I was using a new midi cable into a korg radias.

Are there any recommended courses of action for this?

  • Hey,

I was told that Keystation 61es series have some kind of error which was reported many times.
If you still have warranty, contact M audio and ask for a new one.

My warranty expired long time ago so I ended up buying new keyboard.

  • Fortunately it was a gift from a sibling who no longer used it, so I hadn't paid for it. I'll check on the warranty situation anyway. Thanks for a super quick reply!

  • See if you can get some other model, cause you can end up again with the same problem.

    Welcome
