M-Audio Keystation - Trouble in Studio One and Live!

I bought the M-Audio keystation 61es and the Oxygen 61 to use the midi features for recording and adding instruments, elements, and effects to my recordings. I have downloaded Studio One 2, Ignite, Audacity 1.3, Reaper, and Ableton Live 9 Live softwares for my recording efforts. The 2 keystations do not work at all. I do not get any tone or key response from the keyboards. I have read the manuals, looked at tutorials online and on youtube, called M-Audio tech support repeatedly and I am still at square one trying to get the keystations to perform any action or work in any manner. Yes, I have tried changing the sound settings to no avail--nothing works. I have nothing but top of the line, latest state of the art equipment--Presonus innerface, 200 watt stereo PA, ANAS 9 computer with windows 8, Fender guitars and amps, professional quality cables and hardware, and I can not get the key stations to activate a midi function or make a key board sound. I have been trying to solve these problems for a couple of weeks, working at it for 5 or 6 hours a day with absolutely no positive results at all. Nothing works!

  • Hi Don,

Thanks for posting. Sorry to hear you're having trouble!

If you're already in contact with the technical support team, please continue with them. One on one troubleshooting with them will be the easiest way to get up and running.

More generally, the Keystation and Oxygen series are both MIDI controllers. They do not produce any sound on their own. Instead, they control sounds built into other sources like those available with Studio One, Ignite, Reaper, and Ableton Live.

You can email back your support representative and they'll be happy to continue helping. And certainly I'll still be able to help with any additional questions here!

Studio One 2 - go to:
    Studio One -> Options

Go to: 'External Devices' tab (you may have set up the keystation traditionally as a keyboard already) if not do so here by selecting add then the top option of 'New Keyboard' once done repeat and this time from the huge list of devices select 'Mackie Control' (we are adding a 2nd set of 'MIDI in' information
Then: Select midi input as 'MIDIIN2' - No need to worry about output at this stage.

Select 'Mix' (this brings up your faders and such)

Select the button (bottom left of this pane) 'External' you should see your device!
Right click the one that says 'Control' and then select 'Edit'.

Select the tab that says 'Keyboard' or whatever you named it and you then click 'MIDI LEARN' press some keys / pads and right click deciding on whether it is either a button / fader / knob and so on then right click on your daw / vst and set the control from that option.

A bit tricky to explain on here but maybe if this is in anyway helpful I might make a quick video to help.

    Regards! - Rich.

  • I’m confused, frustrated, & po
I found and added mackie control. there is no place to select and add MIDIIN2.
There is a mix at the bottom right corner, but there is no external and I can not see my device, can not click control and select edit. It is not there to be seen...

None of your instruction apply or work or are an option. I simply don't see the things that you say I should be seeing. I added mackie control--that's it and nothing has changed. It still does not work. So much for the easy plug and play bs.

I have to basic studio one 2 artist version. It is nothing but a headache and it is not compatible with M-Audio keystations. It is so frustrating to get instructions that do not apply to my circumstances. I would love to actually see and be able to apply your detailed instructions, but it is not an option. I simply don't have access to what you are seeing and suggesting that I do.

  • Hi Don,

Any DAW software like Studio One or Ableton Live are compatible with the Keystation.

I'm not sure that the free version of Studio One has a Mackie Control or any built-in sounds.

If you could provide more details about what you seeing, it may be easier for us to find the problem. If you could, upload some screenshots of where you're running into trouble or where things seem to be missing from what Rich had suggested. The more details, the more we can help.

I explained in detail that I do not see the things that was suggested by your tech support. I can not find the proper steps to make repairs when I do not have access to the things I am instructed to go to, or to open, or see, etc. I would love to be able to go to external devices, as instructed, and make changes. I was able to select Mackie Control, but that was the last thing that I was able to see. I did not see a way to select, or add, MINIIN2. It is not an option! I can not open mix. I do not see a button to the left of mix for external so I can click control and edit. They are simply not there and can not be found. Please give me some instructions that I can actually follow on my STUDION ONE 2 artist software.

This reply from Dan R is no help at all to me! I replied to the previous email detailing what I am instructed to do, but it is impossible because I do no see the options or categories to make changes.

I have been at this for weeks, working every day, and I am not receiving any help. No, Dan R, the studion one 2 is not compatible with the keystation. This is confirmed by your tech, Chris. He can not get it working either.

One of your techs, Chris, phoned today, took command of my computer to get my software and M-audio up and running. I thought he had it fixed, but now I have no sound at all. I have gone to control panel sound and I can not restore my sound settings. Y'all are screwing up more than you are fixing. I need help returning my computer to it's original settings and then I am returning this piece of junk M-audio keystation to the store and getting my money back. Your tech support is not capable of getting my keyboard 61es to work with STUDIO ONE2, or any of the other softwares that I have access to.

  • First let's clarify; if you have a Keystation 61es (silver color), then there are no Mackie Control options because the Keystation does not have buttons for these.

In this case, you only need to configure a "Keyboard" type device in Presonus Studio One to get the keys to function in Studio One. See the picture below:

After this, you will need to be familiar with virtual instruments Presonus has provided in Studio One and how to enable them to play back sound. Here is a video for that:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUFO3...

If your version of Studio One does not come with virtual instruments, you will need to contact Presonus for more information on what is supposed to be provided in your version and how to add it.

If there were also problems with your audio interface / soundcard setup, this would result in no audio playback but would not be related to the Keystation.

Perhaps this video would get you started, though:

    I hope this helps.

  • I am Don Fletcher's nephew, I also purchased an M-Audio Oxygen 49 and I am having an audio issue with Studio One where the controller is making a piano tone sound when hitting certain keys, so matter what VST voice I pick. Also, it is toggling through the "controls" as I play, opening items on Studio One as if I was utilizing the keyboard shortcuts. I need help getting the Oxygen to allow me to play the VST instruments when I want to just play, and utilize the keyboard shortcuts when I want to use those features.
Currently I have the following set (because its the only way I get to use the keyboard and get sound):
Under External Devices in my Options I selected
    Device Model: Mackie Control
    Manufacturer: Mackie
    Device Name: Control
    Receive From: Oxygen 49
    Send To: Microsoft MIDI Mapper

I also have set up under External Devices in my Options
    Device Model: M-Audio Oxygen 49
    Manufacturer: M-Audio
    Device Name: Oxygen 49
    Receive From: Oxygen 49
    Send To: Microsoft MIDI Mapper

I appreciate your advice and expertise.

  • I’m depressed
When you send your illustrations, displays, and tutorial videos, I NEVER see the same thing as a display or option on my STUDIO ONE 2. I have absolutely no presets! My keyboard 61es is useless. It does nothing and has no functions at all. There is nothing that relates or corresponds with any of your instructions. I do not see any thing that relates or is identical to what you show that I should be seeing or doing to complete the step by step set up instructions. I have tried every possible variation for setting up my PreSonus audio box--nothing works! The same applies to the M-Audio Keystation 61es--nothing works! I have spent hours working on this every day for weeks and I have accomplished absolutely nothing--nothing works. I can follow instructions, but your instructions, and what I see on my computer and the few options that I have, in no way relate to your instructions. I am so frustrated and disappointed in this expensive investment being a total failure. The tech support personnel has been very patient and you have tried repeatedly to help me; but nothing has worked. I apologize for venting on you techs. This is so aggravating that it would even piss off Gandhi! My software has absolutely no instrument presets. I can not see any presets for any function: instuments, elements, whatever. I can not get a single note for my keyboard. Your tech support, Chris, assumed control of my computer and he was able to get a sound from the keyboard, but it was just a single note or noise; then when I got control again I got nothing from the keyboard. He made changes to the sound options and switched the sound to audiobox and I was supposed to have the option to switch it back so I could use my other sound settings for my Rosetta Stone languages. However, when I turned my computer on again, I had no sound at all. I tried going to the sound set up on control panel, but it was locked up. I had no sound! I was forced to restore my computer to an earlier "restore setting" to fix the problem and get my sound back. It is always something like that which is negative and I am still at square one after all this time. I have STUDIO ONE 2 software, PreSonus audio box limied edition innerface, ANAS computer with windows 8, and M-Audio keystation 61es. Can you create a format for setting this up using this equipment, please? Thank you.

  • Hi Don,

The tech support team will contact you to continue helping. I'm afraid this is not something we will be able to effectively solve on a forum. Continuing your troubleshooting over the phone is the best method here. They'll get it!

I really don't think Keystation is the cause of the trouble here. I think it is something related to Studio One and/or the Audiobox setup. I'm betting it's something we'll be able to fix.

In terms of these "presets", it's possible there is something missing from your Presonus Studio One installation. You might want to contact their support team to double check this.

In either case, our support team will be happy do their best to get things up and running. Thanks for your patience! :)
