M-Audio M-Track Latency on 2017 MacBook Pro

I have an M-Audio M-Track connected to a 2017 MacBook Pro via USB to a USB-C Hub. The MacBook only has USB-C ports on it. Recently, I'm having problems recording with QuickTime Pro. When I record, my voice sounds like it's slower than normal. I've tried restarting and closing extra applications, but it's still happening. There are no drivers for the Mac for this. I've read a bunch of different articles on latency, but nothing seems to help. What can I do?

    Hey Albert,

    Thanks for posting!

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble. Audio latency can occur when your buffer settings are too high. Buffer settings determine the amount of time it takes your computer to process incoming audio. At lower settings, record monitoring will have reduced latency but at a greater cost to your CPU. Higher buffer settings will decrease stress to your CPU while causing more latency in your playback.

There is no standardized buffer setting as it depends completely on your system specifications and the size of your projects. From your description, however, it sounds like you may need to decrease the buffer size in your DAW.

The USB C hub may also be causing audio latency. Since you need the adapter I recommend using an Apple certified device and a USB cable with a ferrite bead. This will helps to lessen transmission issues.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thanks Eliza. Would a USB-B to USB-C cable help? That way, I'm not connecting to the hub, I'm connecting directly to the MacBook Pro? What's a ferrite bead?

I don't see anyway to adjust the buffer settings. I'm using GarageBand and QuickTime pro for recording.
