I’m frustrated

Code 49 - Mem Dump/ SYSEX doesn't work on Mac

OK newest firmware, 3rd Code 49 I have had almost everything seems to be working right "really sad on M-Audios part" except Mem Dump. At this point it could be me but I have had 3 units so not sure. I run Mac have the SysEx librarian, it takes the dump but it will not send it back.I have tried the one fix on here where you just record the MIDI dump in your DAW but I have Ableton and it don't work.

I really need to get this fixed or I am just taking this POS back to Guitar Center I have 10 days to return it.
Does anybody know who to get this thing to take a dump in the way that it should?

    Hi Joey,

Sorry you are having trouble with that.

Yes, we determined over at this thread that this was an issue with Sysex Librarian in particular. I've already sent the notes over to our team, but I'm not sure if this is anything that can be addressed from our end.

Either the way this is not something that was addressed in the latest firmware update. You can see the complete list of update notes here:

    http://www.m-audio.com/kb/article/2040

I'm not sure if Ableton is capable of sending/receiving Sysex information, but the other user was certainly able to do this with Logic Pro X. I've also had no issues doing this with MIDI Ox on a windows system. So the Code is very capable of sending/receiving sysex dumps.

I've yet to find any other software for Mac that will send/receive sysex dumps, so unfortunately I don't have anything else to recommend here except to use a Windows system to send/receive sysex.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Here you go. Try this out:

    - Download and install MIDI Ox on your windows computer:

    MIDI-OX

    - Once installed, plug in your Code, turn it on and open MIDI Ox
    - Go to Options > MIDI Devices and select the "Code49" in both the MIDI Input and Output boxes
    - Click OK

    - Go to View > Sysex and this will open a new window
    - Select Sysex > Receive Manual Dump... and a "Sysex Recieve" window should appear

    - On the Code, press the EDIT button and press the key labeled "MEM. Dump"
    - Use the arrows to choose the preset you want to send and press the "Enter" key. (I just chose Preset 01 / GNMIDI)
    - You should see the number in the "Sysex Receive" window jump to about 886 bytes to indicate it received the dump.
    - Click Done and you'll see the data fill up the "Display Window"

    - To save this, click on Display Window at the top and select "Save As"

Now to load this back on to the Code, I'm going to assume that we are coming back to this later on and are going to load the file we just saved. Make sure that you change and re-save your preset on the Code so that it will be clear that something changes when we send our Sysex Dump back to the Code. The pad colors are a pretty obvious way to note that the preset did/did not load.

    - Open the Sysex window again (View > Sysex)
    - Select Command Window > Load File... and choose the file we just saved. You should see it populate the Command Window.
    - Select Command Window > Send Sysex
    - You should see a status bar appear. This should be pretty quick.
    - When it's finished, load a different preset on the Code and then go back and select the newly sent sysex preset (in my case Preset 01 / GNMIDI)

This should be back to it's original state from the Sysex dump!

Let me know if this helps! Please keep in mind that I am doing this on my end as I'm writing this and can confirm that it's working properly. So I'm sure if you run into issues, we can figure it out.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Hi Joey,

Any progress on this? Have you had a chance to try this out yet?

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Code don't receive SysEx PLAY - Help.

    Good evening.

I am following the backup procedure and restore presets in the M- Audio CODE 61 .
The procedure of sending the controller = > SysEx works correctly. But in trying to reverse the path that is to send the SysEx Librarian for the controller does not work.
I click the file, select the USB port as MIDI communication port , active PLAY the .sys file, but the expected message should appear on the display [ SYS ] does not appear , so the driver does not receive backups .

    Any idea?

    All -
I can't seem to get mem dump to work at all. I want to upgrade to the latest firmware, but I don't want to lose months of configuration work. I hit Edit -> MEM DUMP -> 01 -> Enter and the display just goes back to "GNMIDI". MIDI OX never receives any SYS EX. It receives normal note on, note off and midi cc messages otherwise, so I am pretty sure everything is configured correctly. I am using MIDI cables and not USB. Should that matter?

      HI Mike,

I recommend to connect via USB. I'm not sure that the Code will send a Sysex dump out the 5-pin MIDI port.

      I hope this helps!
    • I was able to get it working. I did try the USB and it failed initially. I had my Motif XS Rack plugged into another USB port and I removed it. I then upped the buffer size from 256 to 2048 in MIDI OX and it worked. I think the dump size is 1350 bytes. After that I ran the FW update and was able to restore my settings. Pitch wheel still jumps from 64 to 54 :( I confirmed this in MIDI OX. Audible using my bagpipe patch where I want to drone up to the note for AC/DC and Zep covers. Will this be addressed in a future update, or should I return the unit for another?

I had all sorts of dump problems with my Mac - I was using using Sysex Librarian, as it was the only thing out there for OSX.

I eventually gave up, and I'm now dumping Sysex directly into Logic and it works fine. I can even save and export the file to a Hex editor and change the Code's preset names to something that suits me.

    Hi everyone,

I put together an official guide to walk you through backing up your presets with MIDI Ox. You can check it out here:

Code Series - Sending and Receiving Sysex Dumps with MIDI Ox

This should be much easier than following the instructions above.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hi everyone!

Good news! M-Audio has released a new firmware update for the Code that addresses these issues with SysEx Librarian and other Mac software. This will be updater version v1.2.1. After the update you should be able to use the Sysex Librarian to send presets back and forth.

You can find the new update at our Drivers & Updates page. Just select the categories:

    Keyboard Controllers > Code # > Windows 7-10 or Mac OS X 10.9.5 - 10.11

Please make sure that you get the correct update for your Code version and operating system! If you need instructions on how to update, you can follow the guide from the last firmware update here:

Code Series - Updating the Firmware
