Midisport 4X4 not recognized in my DAW (Reaper)

I've scoured the internet and tried every fix I could find. I have a brand new desktop devoted only to music and run Reaper as my DAW. Neither the Midiman 4X4, nor associated keyboards are recognized in Reaper. However, if I use an earlier generic USB-Midi cable (one keyboard only) I do see it in Reaper and it does work.

If I do not instal the drivers, Win7 32 bit does not recognize the 4X4. In the driver list it's "Unrecognized device". If I install the drivers, then the device list does show the 4X4 correctly. However, it still doesn't show up in my DAW, nor does it show in any application that uses midi..although the generic midi to USB cable does work.

I have:

- Gone through the USB hubs and turned off power saving on each
- Installed it with and without Administrator privileges. (Removing it before each installation)
- Tried it with and without a USB hub
- I have installed it in various USB sockets in case there are conflicts
- I have also installed my keyboard's drivers just to make sure.

Nothing. Any ideas? I'm ripping my hair out.

  • Hello John,

    Thanks for posting!

There are a few different generations/variants of the Midisport 4x4. Do you have one that actually says MIDIMAN on it, with blue/yellow/white coloring?

Or, if it says M-AUDIO, is it mostly silver or mostly black (Anniversary edition)?

The mostly black unit is class-compliant, which would not require drivers. This would indicate that your Windows install may simply be missing its stock MIDI/USB drivers.

If not, have you removed any other USB devices and hubs/adapters? Tested another USB cable?

If possible, would you have another computer to test with (Mac or PC)? This would help us best isolate a potential hardware issue.

Let me know and I'd be happy to help!

  • I have this same problem, only I have a MIDIsport 2x4 and I even installed the driver using the associated CD-ROM. Also, I am running Win7 x64 instead of 32-bit.
All of my other USB-connected hardware units work (FOCUSRITE 18i8, Novation Impulse 49, Novation Circuit, QWERT Keyboard, and mouse). I used to use the MIDIsport 2x4 with all the same gear on my ASUS x551m which ran Windows 8.1 x64. I know that the 2x4 still has some functionality because in addition to powering on, it transfers MIDI from my Circuit to two of my other synths. It just won't be recognized by any DAW that I try to use (mainly Cubase & REAPER).
I used to have problems with the 2x4 not working properly, but after installing the right driver appropriately from the internet (btw I don't have Internet access on this new PC I am using) it worked fine - however these problems I just mentioned were only of MIDI not being transferred. The device would still show up in any/all of my DAWs.

    Please help?

    Best,
    Stephan

  • I have the Anniversary 4X4, too. It shows up in the device manager in Windows 10, 32-bit edition, but not in any of the five MIDI programs I regularly use. The power light dims and brightens in a regular "rhythm", by the way.

My MIDI Programs are Finale, jOrgan, Polyphone, and Toby Bear VST mini-host, and Garritan's Aria Player.

    MIDI-OX doesn't recognize it, either.

Any help you can offer is *very* much appreciated.

  • PS. I have updated to the latest drivers even though they shouldn't be needed: 6_1_3 Driver 5_10_0_5141. I also use Sound Font Librarian on occasion and Viena (one "N") sound font editor. None of them recognize it, either.

  • M-audio is a shitty company. First, I got a profire 2626 that took forever to update its drivers to the new OSX. Now this. At least in the former case, it was clear what the problem was. Since the midisport doesn't require any drivers, I haven't a clue why it just stopped working in Logic one day without me changing anything in the prefs or my OS. I've since installed a few more DAWs (including Reaper) on different computers to see if it would work with them and it doesn't. Knowing it was m-audio, I wouldn't have spent $50 on it if it weren't the only one the stores in my area carried.
