Need Help Connecting M-Audio Studiofile BX8a to Mac

I have a set of M-Audio Studiofile BX8a speakers. I need to connect them to my mac desktop computer. How do I do this? Will I need a certain cable?

Also, how should I set the speakers up? Which cords go into what holes?

Thanks!!

    Thanks for posting!

The best way to do this is to get a USB audio interface, like the M-Track II, if you don't already have one. Otherwise you'll be using the output for the soundcard built into your computer and some split cables and adapters which just isn't ideal.

With an audio interface you can use the 1/4" outputs on the back (pretty common for most interfaces, like a big headphone jack) and connect a 1/4" cable to the 1/4" inputs on the back of the Bx8 speakers. You'll want to use TRS cable for this, which is a balanced cable, meaning it's wired to prevent picking up any noise or interference from its surroundings. You can tell its TRS because it will have two rings on the end, like this:

If you don't want to go with an audio interface, you can certainly get by with using the headphone output on your computer, though you won't be getting the most out of the speakers. you can use a cable that is stereo 1/8" (two rings around it like the TRS, like a headphone cord) on one end and a split 1/4" TS cable on the other end (one ring around each connection). Would look something like this:

This should work but the connection will be unbalanced, so try not to have a very long cable, otherwise you may get some static or distortion.

I hope some of this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

  • What is the bets way to connect Studiophile AV 40 speakers to a Macbook Pro for optimal sound quality; having trouble connecting via the headphone port on the Mac and AV 40.

    Thanks,
