profire 2626 standalone adat router

Route direct ins to adat outs to RME DigiFace USB (adat to USB).

I need to route 16 analog drum channels to the adat "outs" 48/96k of two ProFire 2626 units as standalone devices. The RME USB is going to a PC / LINUX? Laptop running the latest REAPER DAW. This requires me to use the "Total Mix" RME routing software.

I don't want to use and don't have FireWire connections and want to stay away from any more software. Reaper and Total Mix is plenty to deal with.

Question is ... is this possible? I'm thinking the units will have to be setup via a FireWire Mac with the M- Audio software and that's not an issue as I know someone who's used these interfaces with ProTools. I can have units tweaked to do what I want.

After that's done will I be able to forget about the Mac, ProTools, M-Audio software and just get to work?

If this is not feasible I need to know so I can sell the two units I just bought before thinking this through. :( Obviously didn't think I'd have a problem but now I'm expecting the worst so I'm askink for a yay or nay on this idea.

What say you? Advice to s better route without incurring more debt or as little as possible. I just want it to be set and forget.

Anything I need to watchout for such as cable type and lenghts? Am I going to be running the whole works through inferior Ad/da's ruining an expensive analog setup by using these units as adat routers? Better ideas?

Much appreciated! And Thank you!

  • Hey psycom,

    Thanks for posting!

The ProFire's Control Panel will be necessary to determine the behavior of the optical ports. This setting in the Control Panel software will not toggle the behavior for the interface when it is to be used as a standalone interface. With that in mind, you will need to have an active FireWire connection in order to properly use this function and route audio.

With regard to the next step you should take, it doesn't sound like this interface is going to satisfy your hardware requirements. Going forward, it is a good practice to check compatibility with regard to hardware I/O (how connections are routed - analog or digital?) and connection type (USB, FireWire, etc.) as well as operating system compatibility if the interface uses a driver.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

  • Thank you so much! That fixes that. My fault for not doing the proper homework. Onwards I go to sell off a pair of unnecessary interfaces. Anybody needing them can find em on eBay: psycom-2008 at $100 each.

  • Hello there,

i have a similar question and didnt want to open a new thread about it.:

Is it possible to use the Monitor controller knob and/or the headphone controller of the Profire 2626 while using it in standalone mode connected to the RME Digiface USB?

    Thank you!
