Profire 2626 as Stand Alone Preamp Unit?
This might be crazy, but... Can you use the M-Audio Profire 2626 as a stand alone unit for just the preamps. Meaning that it would not be directly connected to the computer as the interface via firewire, but the audio signal from the preamps would be routed to a different interface/converter (such as the Apollo 16)?

Hi,
Yeah you sure can!
Standalone Mode
ProFire 2626 can be used in Standalone Mode (i e , without a computer) To enter Standalone Mode, power down the interface, disconnect any FireWire cables attached to the FireWire Ports (12), and power on the interface
The parameters in this section of the Control Panel determine how ProFire 2626 will function while operating in Standalone Mode This is a useful feature as it allows you to set the Standalone Mode settings independently from the hosted settings This saves you from having to reconfigure the Control Panel each time before you use the interface in Standalone Mode
The instructions are in the manual page 27.
You'll need to connect the ProFire to a computer system to configure the settings firstly, then you can power down and run standalone with the setup you configured.
Kind regards

That response about Page 27, is as vague and unclear as the day it was printed. Why can't a "M-Audio Tech Support Specialist" ...simple post exact, proven and precise instructions on the subject; but only after actually physically attempting and succeeding to do what page 27 instructs us to do?
I say this because the word on the street is that "M-audio clearly lied when they claimed the unit had the additional "Stand Alone" usability. "Bait & Switch" is not the best thing to be convicted of.
The user that bought the 2626 bought it because of that advertising. Why would M-Audio risk damaging their fame and reputation with false adverting practices?- view 1 more comment

Thank you for the tip on "16bit" when you found it gave a clear answer on my 2626 problem..... I've never heard of "16Bit" other than referring to computers. Where would I be able to read what you're referring too? Thanks in advance for this......

You really are some kind of special...

They don't have any reputation left...
But, the 2626 works perfectly well as a standalone unit. What's the problem? -
-
I know what you mean about the manuals being less than simple to read. The Delta AP2496 took some re-reading to understand most of it. It's OK if you are used to these devices, and know how things work anyway, but for newer users it could all be written a bit more simpler, and logical.
What is your purpose? How do you want it configured? How are you connecting the unit?
There are different ways to configure standalone mode, so if you provide specific requirements, someone may be able to provide a step by step.

Hello, I am 16bit :D
What are you trying to do with the Profire 2626? It seems simple enough to make it run in Standalone mode, but you will need to configure the devie to work how you want it to, to suit the needs that you have. -

i have an apollo twin duo that i'd like to use as the main interface and master clock.I've been trying to connect my 2626 trhu adat and use the preamps but no luck as of yet? can ayone help?

I have the profire 2626. Then I bought a nice new mac. Then I find out the profire has no drivers for OSX dammit..... So I bought a new interface now I wanted to use the 2626 as a preamp 8 octane pre's ya know sweet!...... not so much luck the 2626 just blinks a blue light and transmits no signal. I connect it to my old pc and went into the m-audio control panel and changed a-d to a-d-d-a and output on optical. Still have not found anyone who has used this piece as a stand alone preamp. And since m-audio doesn't make interfaces anymore I'll just sell this crap on ebay to someone running windows 7. Solved. M-audio 2626 does not work in stand alone mode never had never will

User guide page 30 explains this.
"A/D Mode:
In this mode, ProFire 2626 acts only as an analog-to-digital (A/D) and S/PDIF format converter. The interface does not perform any digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion, but instead allows the analog inputs to
be routed to both the analog and optical output ports simultaneously."
So, you needed to keep it in A/D Mode if you wanted to use it as a standard analogue in and out preamp.
I know it's to late for you, but this may help someone else. -

Working fine here in standalone as an ADAT input to my Focusrite 18i20.
Joel-
sorry ... how do you setup that??? its simple??? do you need a pc or mac with a firewire plug to setup the 2626??? i have on 18i20 and a friend who are seeling a 2626 and im under if its not a big choice to buy that insted a ada8200 behringer ... ths

Yes you need to connect it to your computer with the drivers installed to set up the routing that you want (ie. analogue in 1 to ADAT out 1, analogue 2 in to ADAT out 2 etc.). Then after that it will work in standalone mode with that routing.

Never used mine in standalone mode, but I should probably try.

Can anyone confirm the total AD+DA latency of the Profire 2626 in standalone mode?
Preferably in samples, not milliseconds-
Bump!
Anyone got a respectable reply to Matthew's 1 year old question,
"Can anyone confirm the total AD+DA latency of the Profire 2626 [audio interface when] operating in Standalone Mode?" -

FYI - in standalone mode, with the clock source set to spdif (from my motu 828mk3) and the analog channels 1 to 8 mapped to the adat 1 outputs, it will pass the signal via adat 1, but the preamps (turning the knobs) have no effect on the signal level. I haven't tried using the analog outs yet (as the whole point was to utilize 8 extra channels with preamps) but the A to D mode of standalone is pretty useless

make sure you are using XLR connectors on preamps ..... the front gain knobs will only effect the level if connected xlr

Just tried the analog outs, same deal. Preamp pots have no effect on the (very low)signal level that is sent over ADAT or via analog outs.
-
-
I wonder if the control software needs to be utilizes to increase the hardware gain controls internally, *before* running our M-Audio 2626 extinct dinosaurs in standalone mode.
Beyond that speculative guess, anybody got a solid solution for Colin Roy? -
