Trigger Finger Pro sequencer not working?

I've just purchased a refurb TFP, and installed the software correctly, and it was working last night, both with Pro Tools via Arsenal and Reason. I changed nothing in the settings, and today the sequencer is not working at all when I press play on the TFP. The MIDI clock is sent to external, and the DAW is sending MIDI beat clock data to the TFP. When I press play on the TFP, the DAW starts playing, but the sequencer doesn't. I am able to program, save and load sequences, just not play them. The pads and faders are all working as expected otherwise. I feel like it must be a setting or something, but I cant get the sequencer to start with any software or no software connected to the TFP. I appreciate any help.

  • I hope you saved the connected DAW's PREFERENCES settings which worked yesterday and that you SAVED the Trigger Finger Pro's settings which worked yesterday also, Alan.

You might go step by step, and make sure you covered all the steps required for MIDI CONTROL and MIDI sync, and save another set of settings under a slightly different name.

You might do well to meticulously write those steps down, in order as you perform them, and SAVE them, so TFP and your DAW can successfully do their dance every time you flower up your system, posting it here, for us. Also, you ought to mention which Computer/Operating System/RAM amount, etc., you're working with.

  • The only prefs profile I changed was PT+Arsenal, to map the faders. I haven't changed MIDI settings on the TFP at all, and for all applications the clock should be set to External, which it is. I have not modified the Arsenal profile or the MIDI profile which is used for Reason.

I'm concerned that the problem is not with my software, but with the unit, as since posting, I have loaded Arsenal in stand-alone mode and have the same symptoms. Pads work, faders and knobs work, sequencer does not.

I'm running Windows 10 with an i5 and 16GB of RAM, all SSD drives. I have the TFP connected via USB, but did not receive a power supply for it. This doesn't appear to be an issue for most users, or for me, as all other functions work.

I'll start from the beginning using the m-audio videos for setup instructions and see if I missed anything.

  • Support suggested changing the MIDI clock to internal and it works in the Arsenal app, but not in External MIDI mode.

  • I've got it working now. Takes a bit of luck to get the settings right. For PT I had the MIDI beat clock going to the wrong device, I think it works now, fingers crossed.

  • Hey Alan,

Happy to hear you've got it working!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

PS - Thanks for your assistance TFP Noob!

  • I’m amused
It seems to work now, as long as each time I load Pro Tools, I set the MBC to the correct device. It's still a little tricky in Reason, but as I'm learning, nothing is simple in the world of MIDI. Good to see m-audio support reply in about an hour.

  • Alan, are we talking past each other?
I've attempted to encourage you to SAVE your settings that manage to work with TFP -- that is SAVE within your DAW, those Preferences/Options for MIDI, (Transport) Control, and Sync that you're using, that work.

That way you shouldn't have to re-set those preferences/options every time you *power up your system.

If I were you, I would still elect to saveprefs/User Default inside Trigger Finger Pro, as well, at least do so for the DAW that you're having those "RESET" issues with.
Treat that User Default as a back-up in case you ever accidentally delete the M-Audio-supplied default settings for ProTools and/or Reason.

    CAUTION
But be sure that if you do elect to save preferences inside TFP, that you save within an empty/USER preferences/defaults slot. Do not over-write those M-Audio default settings, as there is no Factory Default Reset capability on TFP.

Congrats on getting it almost right!
Good to hear from you, Nick D!

  • Disclaimer for Alan:
I own a few seats of ProTools, but have refused to use them, so I am unsure how settings are managed therein -- maybe that MIDI Beat Clock setting you have to keep reapplying can't be saved?

  • Pal, you're not talking past me, I'm hearing you loud and clear. My issue isn't with settings on the TFP, it's with the beat clock setting in Pro Tools not saving, as TFP noob has pointed out. Let me say that again. I don't have an issue with settings on the TFP, but thanks for your concern. If I ever meet someone that does have issues with saving settings on the TFP, I will be sure to send them your way.

Problem solved. I've fixed it, close the ticket, thanks for playing.
