I’m Confused...

Trouble getting win 7 (64 bit Sp1) to recognise Midisport 4x4

I've just upgraded to a newPC system (Win 7 64bit Sp1) and I'm having trouble getting some programmes to recognise my MidiSport 4x4 anniversary edition. It seems that any 64 bit programme e.g Reaper, Play, BFD2 isn't listing the midisport as either an input or output device. Windows however does list the device and a 32 bit of Ableton that I'm using also recognises it.

Windows update says I have the most up to date version but when I tried to run the drivers :Install M-Audio MIDISPORT 6_1_2 I got a runtime error. Any advice would be gratefully received! The device worked perfectly beforehand...

Cheers,

Brett

  • Hi Brett,

Thank you for contacting M-Audio. Try to install as an administrator:
Right-click on the driver icon on your desktop.
    Choose Properties.
    Click on the Compatibility tab.
Check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator."
    Click Apply and then OK.

If this doesn't help try to disable UAC:
Open the Start menu and then click on 'Control Panel'.
In Large icon View, click User Accounts.
Click on 'Change User Account Control Settings'.
    Set it to 'Never notify'.
    Click OK.
    Restart the computer.

Let me know if this helps.

Unfortunately I'm still experiencing the same problem after trying the things you mentioned.

I tried to post a screen shot here but it didn't seem to work - here is the exact message I receive:

    "Runtime error!

    You help is much appreciated!

  • Hi,

Another update after some further attempts with this...
I completely uninstalled the existing drivers using an Avid installer I found here on my hard drive:

    C:\ProgramData\AVID\Installers\MIDISPORT\AvidInstaller.msi

This allowed me to the install the M-Audio MIDISPORT 6_1_2 I with the method you suggested in compatibility mode. Windows 7 recognises the driver now but...

Most of my 64 bit programs still don't recognise the midisport 4x4.

The only program that does recognise it is Steinberg the grand 3 piano (64 bit)

The following DO NOT list it under midi devices:

    Reaper 64 bit
    Play (EWQL sample engine)
    BFD 2 64 bit.

Is this a known issue? Seems strange to be so hit and miss. I've never had a problem like this before with any other midi or audio device (Including my MAudio FW1814 firewire soundcard)

Any further help would be great - I can't find anything on other forums about this issue and this device must have seen widespread use with these sorts of programs...

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks,

    Brett

  • Hi - Further update - updated Ableton to 64 bit tonight and now that doesn't recognise the midisport either. Currently I am unable to use this device with nearly all my installed software...

    Thanks,

  • Hi - Thanks for your continued help.
This has to be related to an installation issue, I'm sure you're right. Some conflicting findings here...

The 4x4 DOES show up in the following:

-Device Manager - no error messages
-Sound, Video, and Game Controllers - no error messages
-Steinberg The Grand 3 (The ONLY software that recognises it!)

However, it FAILS to show up in:

    -Midi-Ox
    -Reaper
    -Play VST (Standalone)
-Ableton Live 9 (Although it did show up on ver 8 before I upgraded to 9)
    -BFD 2

Really stuck on how windows can recognise this but the majority of programs don't
Your help is very much appreciated!!!

    Cheers,

    Brett
    • Hi Brett,

Try to manually update the driver:
      Go to the Device Manager>
      Sound, Video, and Game Controllers>
      Right click on the 4x4>
      Update Driver Software>
Browse my computer for driver software>
Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer>
      Double click the available driver.

Now see if the 4x4 is showing up in MIDI-Ox.

  • Hi,

Thanks again. Tried this as advised but to no avail - same situation as before unfortunately. Still not showing up in Midi Ox.

The driver ver under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers is listed as: 5.10.0.5141

    Is this the correct version?

    Cheers.

I took a screen shot of the drivers listed under driver file details in the properties of the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers:

  • Hi Brett, disconnect the 4x4 and uninstall its driver. Once the driver uninstall is complete, connect the 4x4 without a driver to see if it connects to your software
    without a driver.
Make sure the 4x4 stays disconnected when uninstalling or installing it's driver.

  • Hi - is there a way I can be sure that I have completely uninstalled all the drivers for the 4x4?

Also, going back to your original advice regarding the setting on the Compatibility tab for the 64 bit drivers, unless I set the option from the drop down box as run in Windows 7 I get the error messages I originally reported. Not sure if this is a variable...

  • Hi. When I uninstalled the driver and then reconnected windows automatically identified it but with a error icon next to it in device manager. It was put under 'other devices'. There was no change to midi ox or other programs. I rebooted before connecting.

I've then tried reinstalling the 64 bit drivers and windows informs me that the device has successfully installed. But there's no change to the situation. Still not recognised under Midi Ox. I can usually sort these things out but this is proving stubborn...

Thanks for the continued help and effort!

    • Hi Brett, but does it show up in Sound, Video, and Game Controllers too?
Did you try it in MIDI-Ox anyway?
    • Without the driver windows puts in under 'other devices' and puts an error icon next to it. That's the only place it appears. Midi ox doesn't recognise it under this setup either.
I'm wondering about my earlier comment about having to set the compatibility to Windows 7 to avoid getting an error running the driver...

      Cheers.

  • Hi - a week or so on and I'm still nowhere with this. Tried all your suggestions to no avail unfortunately. Any further ideas to get this working on Win 7 64 bit? I'm looking to buy a few more midi devices and I was originally going to go with M-Audio as I'm a long time customer. Now a little concerned that the drivers aren't going to be compatible...

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Brett

  • Hi Bob,

Yep this has been frustrating to say the least. Just cannot get the drivers to work on win 7 64 bit no matter what I do. Have been looking at the Motu micro lite as a replacement but its around £120 for a device I essentially already own...

Have you tried the midi ox program? The fact it doesn't list the device is pretty damning for me. Can't see this working or them working out what's wrong but I bet there a lot of people out there with the same problem...

  • Found this topic, having the same problem. My Midisport 4x4 plays dead. That is pluging it does not even light the usb led on. One day though it did turn on and showed other midi traffic from my synths but now it is dead when I need it. tried reinstalling driver, no change. Something is fishy with win7 64bit and USB in general, my computer fails even at copying larger files to usb sticks (reserching it lead to this win7 64bit USB problem many people have) and I feel this is somehow connected.

  • Hi Folks... had to rub my eyes to be sure but I appear to have this working now!!!
Over the last week I've made a number of changes to my system - this is what I changed:

    - I uninstalled my exisiting M Audio 1814FW device as I've changed interfaces. All trace of this has gone.
    - I disabled the midisport audio device monitor under windows 7 services (msconfig)
    - I rolled my firewire driver back to legacy (probably not related...)
    - I've also updated my system bios and display drivers.

At present the midisport is showing up as a device in ALL my programs.
I'll wait a few days to see if this becomes a stable fix. I hope one of these changes proves useful to someone else - but it could just as well be any number of other things!

Let me know how you get on,

    Cheers,

    Brett

  • I’m frustrated
Hi everyone, I had the same problem some months ago: Pro tools 8 only sees the outputs of the 4x4, and no other software can see it, neither midiox. I have a steinberg midi 2x2 installed too (actually a midisport 2x2, since the internal board is a midiman) and I have no problems at all with that one.
I put in practice all the advise I found here, but nothing solved! I connected the devices to different usb ports too.
BUT I tell you this: I disconnected the 4x4 and 2x2 cards. I disinstalled their driver. I boot the system again letting windows to find for a driver on line. Windows found one working for the 4x4 but not for the 2x2. I reboot again having disconnected the midi interfaces. I installed the last maudio midi driver. and now the 2x2 works perfectly but no signs from the 4x4! I'm going crazy! and I have no choice than to buy a motu device, if someone can't solve this in short time!

  • Hi Brett,

Actually if this is possible I would like to get the latest Win7 64bit eproms, meanwhile, I would most apreciate anyone who can help me getting the eproms needed to work at least with XP32 SP3!
My midisport 8x8 is also from the first editions blue & green and the original eproms only work along with the drivers for win 2K. which I definately no longer use!

    Some Help would be apreciateted,
    Regards!

  • On 32bit Vista Ultimate, my Millenium Midisport 4x4 is detected by Midi-OX, and the receive light flashes in accordance with the keys being depressed. I activate Midi In for my 32bit REAPER, which then states not possible to open Midi Input.

I have standalone versions (via a miniport) of Image-Line's Morphine and Harmor. Again they both see the A,B,C,D Inputs and Outputs. Selecting Input/Output A goes undetected by the miniport; yet again Midi-OX sees the incoming signals clearly

    The driver is 6.1.2
