Zone Presets - Can I Turn Them Off?

Hi,

Sorry for the long whiny post, but I'm on the verge of selling my Code 49 if I can't solve this issue, hoping someone can steer me in the right direction....

In the Code series (at least in the Code 49 which I have), Zone Presets send out program change messages when you select a preset. At first take that sounds good - very flexible, you can have it set your external synths' presets just by selecting the Code's preset. There's only one problem - I don't want it to, and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn this off. The reason I don't want it to send program change messages for zones? Because I can't use the Code 49 to hold my 'master' presets like that. Why? I'd like to, but the reason is simple:

*** The Code 49 only has 12 presets ****

Now, why, in this day and age, anyone would think that 12 memory locations for *anything* would be enough, I have no idea. That's barely enough for one live set of songs. And please don't say "you can save/load presets to your computer" - I don't use a computer live. And if I was using a laptop live, I most likely wouldn't be using the Code 49 for my master presets for my setlists. And even if I did use one, it's ridiculous to think using a 3rd-party sysex utility for loading/saving sets of 12 presets is a reasonable approach for a live situation, it just isn't. I can't set up 12 songs at a time before each set I perform, they just change too frequently, it's not practical at all.

Sorry for whining, but I'm frustrated because right now I can't use this controller because of this. I'm sure M-Audio engineers are smart, so maybe i'm just missing something. And if so I'll be the first to admit it and eat my words, please let me know if so.

I like the keyboard for everything else, so I figured I flip it around, and have the Code 49 be the 'slave' and have its presets be selected by my master keyboard. My master keyboard can hold all my songs and issue program change messages to the Code 49 (and my other external sound modules). In my case all I need are just 3 presets for the C49 - either 0, 1 or 2 zones, depending on the song. So I figured I'd set up 3 presets in the C49 and have my master select the one that I need for that song. The problem is, the C49 sends out a program change each time I do that - and I don't want it to. I have my master keyboard holding the program changes for the devices for the zones, I don't want the C49 sending any. But I don't see any way to turn that off - it just has settings of 0-127 for each zone, no 'off' setting. It totally wrecks my setup because of this, because it overwrites whatever sound preset I have set via my master keyboard.

So, I'm in a catch-22: I can't use the Code 49 to hold all my master presets because of the 12 preset limitation, and I can't use it as a 'slave' to my master keyboard because the zones overwrite the presets in the external sound source(s).

If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Buzz

  • Hey Buzz,

    Thanks for posting!

There is nothing that you are missing or overlooking in this instance. Even when zones 1-4 are not selected and Zone itself is not enabled, the Code series will send a program change message. This cannot be disabled. I am sorry that this does not fit your workflow as it is overwriting the program you are using but that is the nature of scrolling through presets. I understand how this is hindering your usage of the Code 49 so I will submit this to development team for consideration to be addressed in a future update for the Code series.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hi again,

"Bank Select MSB / Bank Select LSB / Program Change" MIDI events sends when you enable zone(s) isn't a good idea (IMHO) if you can't disable them.

It will be better to control them by ourself these MIDI events (to relevant MIDI channels). It's more easy to add them, instead of filtering them... For live performance (using set list from Cantabile), automatic "Program Changes" polluate our life!

Like Buzzripper, I don't like this "automatic" Program Change feature, too! M-Audio devs, TIA to remove this, PLEASE!!!!! ;)

    Dominique.

P.S. please consider I'm not "a troll" (or similar) - I mean this because I've sent many messages on forum this day, as new topics or replies. My idea/goal is to walk ahead, without regression, it's simple "comme bonjour".

@Buzzripper: having 12 presets on modern hardware is (IMO) due to M-Audio development schemes for their keyboards: other M-Audio (older) hardwares have 12 presets, too, like Oxygen keyboards for example. But, in live performance circumstances, it can be a serious limitation. However, In my case, for now I'm using only two presets: Preset 12 for Melodics (named "MELODI") and a general purpose "MIDI-C" (Preset 01) as custom MIDI settings. I've bought Code 61 beginning of March, using it since 15 days only...

  • Is there a plan to deactivate auto program changing in zones on the Code 61? Currently in order to use the Zone functionality I have to deactivate PC on my external synths so they don't change sounds as I engage zones. However, then I can't use the program change functionality that the Code 61 implements so well. Please consider this request.

  • I am using the Preset Editor and most things are working fine. I want to use Zones, but I don't want the Code49 to send any program changes to my synth. Each time I go to a different preset, it always wants to send a Program Change (0 by default), which messes up what I have set up on my synth already. I just want to use the Zone to control the key range and MIDI Channel that I play from the keyed; I don't want it to send a program change. How can I "tell" it to not send any program changes when I load a Preset that uses a Zone? Thanks!
