Lead field fails to map upon conversion

I configured one field to map from Leads to Address Book.  (No. of Employees  to  EE count).

Upon converting a lead to a new company contact initially I did not have this mapped.  I set up the mapping and converted a new lead to that same company as a contact.  In this 2nd pass I did have the mapping setup but the EE Count UDF remains blank.  It does not map.  This may be by design so the first value is not overwritten but I would think populating an empty field would be worthwhile.  I would even argue that the last value may be more accurate.

This behavior is by design. We think that the data in an Address Book entry should be more accurate than a lead. However, it is a validate use case that when you work with a lead, you start to get the updated information. You may need to update the contact information of the AB entry. We will look into a design to deal with this situation. For example, we can provide options to update if AB entry field is blank or replace the value in AB entry.
