What happened to the Mayor Program?

  • Question
  • Updated 2 days ago
MerchantCircle has been working on some big changes for our large network of merchants and consumers. These changes will improve online visibility for merchants while optimizing usability for a better customer experience.

Throughout the past year, our team of seasoned engineers and developers have been looking closely at MerchantCIrcle to determine which features should be replaced, moved or improved in order to make this big change successful.

The Mayor Program, a fantastic networking feature, has been moved to the inside of all merchant dashboards. We value the positive impact this program has had on connecting more merchants so we are keeping the program alive in the dashboard--in every merchants' homepage!

The Mayor program will no longer be visible on listing pages. In its place, we have pushed out a couple of exciting new features, including service requests - designed to bring MORE customers to your page and new layout and functionality designed to KEEP them there! After all, what good is any program if customers don't hang around long enough to notice it?

We certainly apologize if this change caught you off guard, but we assure you it is 100% for your benefit and the benefit of the entire network! Remember, our primary goal is to help merchants and customers using MerchantCircle CONNECT!

What a freaking joke you guys TOTALLY f$cked over EVERY mayor in every city. Site is totally a waste of time now. No what you greedy bastards did as usual is treat your members like crap and wanted more ad space so you kicked off the mayors listings. Traffic for this site has went down according to Alexa by 50% the last year or so because you treat members worse than the Nazi's treated the Jews. Another year or so you'll be the MySpace of local directories.

This is a complete outrage! Merchant Circle's greed has cost us thousands of dollars, thousands of hours and they have deleted all of our efforts overnight replacing them with Google Ads!

For those of you who don't understand how it works, let me explain: Merchant Circle gets paid by Google for every time their Ads are shown or clicked on, Merchant Circle removed major components on our page, such as the "Mayor" status and replaced them with Ads only they can cash in on. Of course they offer a "paid" service to remove the Ads (WITH THEIR LATEST UPGRADE BEING A CLEAR EFFORT TO FORCE US TO PAY), but there is no point, as even if the ads are removed, all of our efforts were removed also and we cannot get back our "Mayor" status.

$3,600 DOLLARS LOST BECAUSE OF MERCHANT CIRCLE'S GREED
We paid $200/month x 18 months = $3,600 to our developer to send invitations out every morning

Over 1,000 Hours Wasted BECAUSE OF MERCHANT CIRCLE'S GREED
3 Hours a day x 365 Days = 1,095 Hours Completely Wasted

Our Merchant Circle Mayor Status Lost BECAUSE OF MERCHANT CIRCLE'S GREED
It took us 18 months of daily effort and a lot of money invested to reach Merchant Circle Mayor Status

Search Engine Placement Lost BECAUSE OF MERCHANT CIRCLE'S GREED:
After 18 months of Search Engine Optimization, our Merchant Circle page no longer appears on the 1st page of Google; it doesn't appear at all on the first 10 pages!

FREE Quote Button Now Benefits Our Competitors BECAUSE OF MERCHANT CIRCLE'S GREED:
After 18 months of money and effort invested, we had finally received a quote request via the button. Now the button takes you to our competitors... Isn't it just great that Merchant Circle would use our effort and our money to get our page to the 1st page of Google only to remove everything we had worked for and hand the quotes to our competitors? As if it wasn't enough, let's remove all positive results we had achieved through blood, sweat and tears and replace them with Google Ads that only Merchant Circle benefits from.

I agree with the all the "real" comments on this page (there are a lot of fake ones trying to promote positive feedback)... PUT IT BACK, PUT IT BACK, PUT IT BACK!!!

Once is enough Luigi..gezzz. but probably feel the same way loosing thousands. Your mistake is putting all your apples in someone elses' shopping cart. Huge mistake optimizing MC page as your only source being found on the net. You or I do not "Own" this site, having FTP or DNS. Once you do, you can promote, change, update the site ever which way you feel, just like the owners here did, not that I agree with this Micky Mouse look and feel, only trying to get clicks to Their Adsense ads.

Suggest anyone like Luigi, having only MC, Stop, and seek building a website/blog for goodness gracious, being 10 times better than your MC page, like Denver house painting very proud of, providing our services to local Denver residents and businesses, through our own efforts, and no one else. Matter of Fact, site is in Direct Competition with MC, Super Media, YellowBook, Yelp, Service Magic, and all the rest of free directories on the organic web, therefore having preference, always looking to improve my Own site, not near as much as others, linking to me. :) It's time for everyone to pull heads out of the sand, and start smelling the roses.

I am very upset at Merchant Circle for it's decision to bury the Mayor program.
My marketing director worked for over a year to achieve Mayor status in San Bernardino, only to see it hidden from view. This is an insult to his efforts and to my company, KCAA Radio.

In my experience, such bad decisions are made by an enemy from within. No logical business builder would made such a decision unless it was intended to destroy incentives and lower the company value for an insider buyout.

If MC thought for a second that the dashboard was a good place for advertising there would be paid advertising there. Putting the mayor in this positing is not worth the time spent to reach the top in a big city and does nothing to advertise to clients outside the city as they would have their own mayor's info there. MC rolled out that program and lots of us invested time into it for the advertising it offered - now to take it away with no warning after months and months of working to get to the top of the list is CRAP!!!!

I am very upset that the Mayor program has been basically stuck in the closet. It means absolutely nothing now that potential customers can't see it and therefore there is no incentive to connect with other merchants anymore. The businesses that acheived Mayor status will tell you that in most cases this was not a small feat...it took a great deal of time (and time is money) to acheive this status and keep it. Now it looks like all this work and networking was for nothing. I have always thought MC was one of the best place for business networking and social media marketing up til now...but between this Mayorship highjacking and the fact that you can never reach support live for anything unless you pay for it...I'm going to focus on other social media sights. THe mayor program was very important to the businesses who were the most committed to MC success and now I feel like you just stabbed your best supporters in the back. Very sad!

Hey everybody,

We're sorry to surprise you like this. MerchantCircle did send out some emails talking about these recent changes, but we know how busy people can get and emails often go unnoticed.

I want to assure you that the recent changes are for the awesome benefit of merchants and customers using the MerchantCircle network.

Here's an article explaining a little more. . .

Hope everyone is having a fabulous day.

Cheers,

BULLSHIT to the 10th Power!!! You removed everything that meant something to us. You removed everything we have worked hundreds of hours on. You removed information that has cost us thousands of dollars to obtain (like the Mayor Status). This "benefits" were only for Merchant Circle's pocketbook at the expense of it's merchants. We are deeply disappointed and will be taking our business and our client's business (yes, we were the company setting up Merchant Circle accounts for local vendors) and will be setting up accounts for them elsewhere.

I think they used to say that back in the middle ages when they bled people to remove the evil spirits that were making them sick. "This is all for your benefit" . They usually bled to death but at least it was for their own good. There's comfort in that isn't there?

People MerchantCircle is nothing more than a company (hundreds out there doing this) that took every business listing off the Yellow Page and put them online. 95% of the listings on MC are dead or unclaimed listings with no value.

The people that built MC and gave it any value are the local business owners that generate 100% OF ALL CONTENT FOR FREE for MC to profit from. We write the blog and forum posts, we fill out our profiles in detail, we upload the pictures and videos, we leave the hundreds of thousands of comments on each other's profiles and blog/forum posts.

WE ARE MERCHANTCIRCLE, sadly MC is oblivious to this point.

This is what we ALL must do, stop ALL payments to MC right away that your paying.Second do not login into your account, don't generate any content anymore, don't do anything!

In 3 months MC will lose another 50% or more of there traffic and fall to 2000-2500 or lower on Alexa.

They have already lost HALF of there traffic the last year or so, meaning they have lost HALF of there GOOGLE ADSENSE revenues, meaning they have lost HALF there company revenues. This is why there making our profiles looks like crap adsense farms that Google has stated publicly they hate.

This is why they got rid of that huge mayor of MC banner on every page, by getting rid of that it allows them to add 3-4 Google Adsense banners and that was probably also one of the first thing people clicked before on every page and they don't want that.

They want people to click there ad sense ads, NOT call or email us. They make no money helping us. MC makes I'd say 80-90% or more of there money from Adsense since there customer service is so awful and products suck.

The page load crap answer for why they got rid of the most valuable thing (Mayor program) in MC, is the most BS lie there is. I have been a online marketer for 12+ years, built this little business (one of many I own) from $0 to 6-figures on $16.95 a month in 7 months (a few years back) because I'm a $200 per hour SEO consultant and use SEO/social media for myself and clients nationwide.

They are insulting your intelligence when they say they got rid of the Mayor program for page load reasons, page loading time is 1 of like 100+ factors in Google's formula any knowledgeable SEO person knows that. But that is the answer the higher ups and have told Trisha to spin it as.

MC = Netflix diaster in 2011 or SOPA in 2012!!!

I convinced my general manager that Merchant Circle might become the Facebook for small businesses/merchants and have spent many hundreds of hours building a network and staying involved with MC. The other day when I logged in I thought you had been hacked. To find out that the destruction of your site was an intentional inside job is shocking. Someone said you will be the MySpace of small business. I think it will be more like the AOL ...

The Mayor program change is just one slap in the face. The new design is horrible and I haven't yet figured out how to even connect with another merchant. All those buttons have disappeared. Doesn't matter. You have just shaken the community's confidence in you and MC to the core and I for one will no longer spend any more time on this site. I will also recommend that we cancel all premium services.

I'm, moving on and looking for a new community that calues it's members. Anyone have any good suggestions?

P.S. I can't believe that in order to post this I can't even use my MC login. I have to use Facebook, Google, or some other login that MC must have affiliate deals with.

Fred, you need to get serious. Not much of a lawyer, You have to be kidding, not knowing anything about the web. As unfortunate as it may be for many, probably feeling the same way loosing thousands. Your mistake is putting all your apples in someone elses' shopping cart. Huge mistake optimizing MC page as your only source being found on the net. You or I do not "Own" this site, having FTP or DNS. Suggest anyone like Luigi, having only MC page, Stop! And seek building a website/blog for goodness gracious, having everything like your your MC page, and then some! like Denver house painting , providing painting services to local Denver residents and businesses, through our own online efforts, and no one else. No one else can change, update, modify my website, without MY prior approval. comprende`?

Matter of Fact, site is in Direct Competition with MC, Super Media, YellowBook, Yelp, Service Magic, and all the rest of free directories on the organic web, therefore having preference, always looking to improve my Own site, not near as much as others, linking to me. :) It's time for everyone to pull heads out of the sand, and start smelling the roses, concentrating on your own site, while linking to these mentioned. Having a title page since MC inception back in 2008, I can honestly say I cannot attribute 1 job directly from my page here, although, nice link back to my site, I refuse to pay for online marketing/advertising.

Always being Very Careful with Online Marketing Programs and PPC. Nothing against MC, I have been burned twice with the second largest online reseller of PPC, Super Media. Just google Super Media Lies #1 on Google, explaining my unfortunate experience, nearly filing a complaint with the Attorney General of the State of CO. Unfortunately, not here, as long as MC is following through with the clicks to Their page, where You are listed. hahaha, That's like beating a dead horse with stupidity, I'm afraid.

Leaving you with all these threatening comments, shows your lack of knowledge of the web, and websites in general, I'm sorry to say.
The entire new format of the Merchants home pages is a disaster. And to do away with the Mayor listing on the merchants site is a hugh insult, so many merchants work extremely hard at achieving and maintaining the Mayor status.
It always amazes me when compaines hire someone to evaluate what changes need to be made to "improve" things. Instead of asking the people who use them daily and know what works and directs more business to their sites.
Since these changes the amount of hits on my site has dropped dramatically, and my returning customers have done nothing but complain about how "Horrible" my new home page is, the are totally confused when visiting, and want the original layout and format back.
I'm all for change, though change for the BETTER and not for the WORSE.
M.C. use your head and don't forget what put you on top, when you make changes, and they are hurting the Merchants which is why we are all here. It's time to own up to it being a mistake and go back to what has worked for years, before it's too late and more damage is done.

I spent a lot of time and energy to become mayor in my town, now has that been tucked away.

What even more annoying is when you search my city my store doesn't even come up, instead it gives a list of people who haven't even bothered to register with MC.

What's up with that!?!?!?

I really think MC failed to realize the value of the Mayor Program. I not only spent a lot of time just to get in the top 10 which I finially did today. But because the Chicago Metro area is made up of over 100 subburbs I looked at the mayors in some key subburbs to find good connections to invite. Now I can't do that. I can only do that for the City I live in now.

The Mayor program not only gave the mayor extra recognition but it also allowed us to find more connections in our own market. Yeah you say you can invite connections via the Network tab but that feature doesn't work well and sometimes doesn't even find a business that is in MC.

Without the mayor program restored it makes is harder for me to find connections in the metro area. MC should really consider bring this back to same MC.

There are many issues with this new format that really devalue the use of MC. It just doesn't look like it was really thought out well.

We have three accounts with Merchant Circle... Now Useless

Yes please! we are in!!! this change has caused us thousands of dollars!!!

This is exactly why we didnt put any money into Merchant Circles landing page for P.C.C.S. Anytime you put blood sweat and tears into projects that you do not have full control over youll get an Arse kicking everytime. Live and learn. Lets see if they will reimburse you? LOL ..... U think.?

No matter How bad you feel, This is Someone eles' site, not owing you a plug nickel. Best starting your own site if everything does not meet your standards, just like Twitter, FaceBook, City Search, Google +, Yelp changing individual pages, not that I agree with, but everyone talking legal action, needs heads examined, trying to save your money, you have no basis, as someone Else owns MC, and Not You.

One thing that strikes me is there appears to be a lot of people putting a lot on time on the thier pages in Merchant circle. It is a great tool ( I should say it was a great tool)

You should be investing in your own website. You can control your own website you can't control MC. All we can do is suggest what we would like and hope they listen. If after a resonable time to work through the issues I am still not satisfied I will make the call to either just leave it alone or cancel it completely.

There a lot of members that do not have a website thinking social media is all they need. This change with MC is a perfect example of why you need your own website.

I look at Social Media as a way to build connnections and help drive more traffic to my real website. But the Social Media site should display the information properly and in a prominant place or it isn't worth it. Again If I looked at MC today I would not have joined.

I spent most of my time building connections and the mayor program. Put the mayor program aside and I am still frustrated that MC thinks our information on our own page is less important that ads and who else has been to the page. That really has to be addressed and I have not seen any response from MC indicating they are at least looking at that. Where does MC stand on this?

Hello again everybody!

Here is the latest discussion our team has had regarding features that are being heavily considered for changes per the merchant community (thank you again for all your feedback).....

Invite button is broken--and will (hopefully) be fixed by Tuesday, January 24.

Pictures--Photos are going to be moved up HIGHER on your listing page.

Business Description--Is being moved just below photos, which is being placed higher on the page.

"People who viewed this also viewed...."--this feature is being moved BELOW Photos and Business Description for all claimed listings.

Mayor Program--has been discontinued on the public facing side (moved to the dashboards of merchant accounts) to speed up page load times and clean up the presentation of merchant listings.

The concerns surrounding the discontinuance have recently been expressed to Product and Development and the Community Team is awaiting a response. As soon as we know anything we will let you in on it.

Request a Quote has been temporarily removed from claimed listings-it will likely not be back until better placement and clarity on the feature can be expressed.

Remember, Request a Quote it is still on UNCLAIMED listings--this means, if a browsing customer requests a quote from an unclaimed merchant listing, the request will be sent out to CLAIMED merchants--this is why the feature is still visible behind your dashboard, in your "Customers" tab;.

Reviews and Ratings---Reviews and Ratings may no longer be left anonymously. Customers must register with a valid email to leave a review or rating.

Listing Traffic--the traffic icon on the listing page itself has been removed, you may still monitor your traffic from inside your listing, under Performance. Traffic

My Story has been removed as it was deemed too similar to "Business Information." Content duplication only hurts listings online. We recommend using "Business Information" to tell your story, then use "Products and Services" to list your service details.

Community Bulletins were removed to "clean up" listings for browsing customers and prevent link farming, which hurts the network as a whole.

WE ARE ALREADY SEEING AN INCREASE IN VISITOR TRAFFIC TO THE SITE!!! WE"LL HAVE SOME STATS FOR YOU VERY SOON. THIS IS EXTREMELY EXCITING AND WE ONLY ANTICIPATE THINGS WILL CONTINUE TO GROW!

I just read your employee reply which contained promises to fix a few of the things that are out of place or broken on the site.

After reading it, there is no doubt that you guys have lost your way. The MC merchants who spent the most time promoting your site are the people who were running for Mayor status. To say that you are moving the recognition of this accomplishment to a hidden place on the site so a page will load faster is mental garbage.

Do you actually think we are that stupid? Let me put it another way.The employees who came up with that rationalization lack common sense. Bluntly stated, you are proving to be unworthy of our time.

Anyone who has an entry level knowledge of simple html will bust a rib laughing at such nonsense. So, do the right thing! Put our status back where it belongs for all to see at first glance.

When I go to the Products page the GET A QUOTE is there. You stated it was been removed but it is still on the product pages? Is MC going to remove it from the products page?

Are you sure the increase in traffic isn't us checking and reviewing our pages because of this change? Seems pretty soon after a major change to be able to say the change is helping increase traffic.

Just saying in order to know if this is a trend it take more than a few days of analysis to determine if your changes are increasing traffic.

Its their software, they can make changes as deemed without notification whatsoever. I know it FREAKING SUCKS but no merit for class action. Its a software program on the internet available to everyone, even the " forced to pay to remove the ad's" version falls under the end user guidelines, YOU HAVE NONE...
