Does Windows operating system now come with a free anti-virus and anti-spam and if so how well does it compare to McAfee?

Check out the Microsoft Security Essentials, a free Software for your Windows PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/def...

Key features are:
Comprehensive malware protection
Simple, free download*
Automatic updates
Easy to use

I am using it for my home computers and so far I had not problems (*knock on wood*)

Thanks Gunther ! I will give this a try - from the write up it looks fine..... does it work with Outlook and scan incoming emails? What if I use the browser version of Outlook, will it still scan and check emails? Thanks again for your help on this. Bruce

Microsoft Security Essentials does not scan emails.
Instead Outlook and Hotmail use SmartScreen anti-spam and anti-phishing filtering technology.
Microsoft Security Essentials should, though, catch a virus that is launched from interacting with an email.

Check with your email provider to see what filtering they offer or use.

Cheers
