Impossible to recover Xbox LIVE gamertags linked to deleted Windows Live IDs.

When a Windows Live ID is not used for a long period of time, it is deleted. Problem is, an Xbox LIVE gamertag linked to the deleted Windows Live ID still thinks it is linked to a Windows Live ID. Even if a new Windows Live ID is created with the same email address, it is not in return linked back to the Xbox LIVE gamertag. This makes it impossible to recover the gamertag or do anything with the gamertag that would require the Windows Live ID, including switching it to a new Windows Live ID.

For me personally, this problem is bad because I had assets in my Xbox LIVE gamertag that I can't get to now, but they're clearly visible when viewing my account from another account, so it's still there.

I've heard and read all of this. I have dealt with xbox support like 6 times and neither wlid or xbox live (even though it's the same company) Will ever be on the same page. They do 2 different things. It's just a way for us to use there messenger and id and what better way to get people on it then to link it up with an xbox live account. I asked xbox support if wlid could recover my password to my gamertag or even look it up. They said no. I asked them if they could look up info on my wlid. They said No. I then asked them if they would ever be on the same page and the xbox live support guy said no. I asked him if it was silly that you had to have a wlid to have xbox live account if the two aren't connected other than usernames associated with each other and he said yes. I asked him wouldn't it just be easier to use a normal email seeing that they send me stuff to that mail account telling me what I can do on xbox live. He said Yes. I also said seeing that My gamertag is the same name as my email account, can't you send me a temp password to that email account so i can change it to something i will always remember. He said no. I just wish The owner of microsoft had this problem cuz he would have to go through all these problems and see how the way they are doing this for someone who looses their password can be so difficult. This isn't as bad as a y2k problem. It's actually a pretty simple answer. Verify your name, email address and address you set up with the account. Then they send you a temp password there to that email address. ( I don't even care if they redflagged me for a month incase they think i was trying to steal someone elses gamertag) Just do something instead of having meetings about what they could do. Actions speak louder than words. They should secret shop themselves and test this out like we all have gotten screwed so they understand what it is like. I know they'll eventually figure it out but by then I'll have as many points earned by then if not more. Why make something more difficult than it has to be. GUMP it down(forrest gump) make it simple easy and you'll have more money flowing into your company.
Thanks for listening Ray Schultz

Yea me too, I have done everything and can't get my id to work either. We just bought a new xbox console and can't even recover my sons saved information. He says you mise well just take it back then it is pointless and I am not starting all over. This would be xbox #4 for us. Red Ring of Death 2 times and bad DVD drive 3rd time....this is getting really expensive. People forget their passwords all the damn time, I just don't understand...then it lets you make a new password but then still won't let you in. grrrr. very pissed...just spend $400 on new Halo Reach Console because my sons DVD drive just went bad the day the game comes out...go figure.

Braaaavoooo. I concur, Ray. Seems like we are two peas in the same pod of resentment and disappointment. Microsoft has not fixed anything with that new release, BUT...you know what they DID do??? Allow you to BUY MORE things from their marketplace!! Well, that should resolve all of our problems now, huh?!

Microsoft just recently sent me a survey on my customer "satisfaction." Now, they tried to word it in a way that reflected a PARTICULAR call, but i made sure to increase the range a bit. Here's what I said in one of my answers when they asked what can be done to improve the support they give:

"Greatly improve its Tier 1 support. Give them the ability to provide resolutions instead of provided more and more scripts to follow. Microsoft's T1 "support" has shown me nothing but hoops...hoops that a consumer must jump through in order to feel like they are being given the support necessary for customer retention. The process they have put in place is designed to exhaust the consumer, which only fosters resentment towards the product and company. Apparently, there are over 15 supervisors in that call center, and they all pose to be higher than the previous person the customer speaks to. All the while they are establishing a relationship between consumer and company that is built on deceit."

Just a token of my appreciation...but you know what?!... I don't give up that easily.

this is nerve racking....
i just recently had my profile go corrupt on me and then just dissapeared off my HDD so i go to use my original gamertag and password......it says incorrect password or email but its funny how they dont list these kinds of scenarios or allow u to update through xbl so now i lost my account and cant recover.
i jumped through loops for microsoft and xbox live gave every bit of the information i do remember but they insisted my password was wrong....at any rate i think i will be selling my xbox360 and buying a ps3 i spent almost 3 years on ffxi and have tons of shit on it......so much time wasted for me there is no other way for me to get any of that back.
i know its my responsability to remember all my information and did but if its the case where if the id expires why wouldnt they just tell me that? i will never buy anything to do with microsoft ever agin there just a shit ton of money leechers.

I too am having this issue... WLID support referred me to XBL support, who referred me back to WLID support. Pretty much they told me my account is corrupted and there is nothing they can do about it. I was about to buy a Zune Pass ($15 a month), give them money... but appearantly they don't want my business.

my Xbox Live account was working fine and then all of the sudden, it said i had zero achievements and my avatar was gone.
i looked into my memory files and to most of the files were corrupted and i deleted only the corrupted files.
I have not used my Xbox live account in a long time (7 months) due to lack of internet.
and when i go to log back in to that account it show all the achievements i had and my avatar.
and when i log back in to makes me start making my avatar over as if i don't have one.

Do i have to buy i new hard drive or do i have to make another Xbox Live account?

You shouldnt get the expired problem anymore, i don't know whats happened with your account. It should just ask you for a new email address, as for canceling, and resigning up, not sure about that as i've never needed to try, you should phone microsoft now and see what they say :(

Something happened to my Xbox unit and the HD got wiped and now I'm trying to recover my gamertag since you can only play Final Fantasy 11 with a single gamertag per account. However, i can't recover my gamertag because I don't remember the Windows Live ID and password I used to make the gamertag 5+ years ago. Anyone know a solution to this problem or know if they changed it so you can use a different gamertag to play FF11?

Signed up with my free month loved it bought a year.problem is when i signed up MS simply forgot to mention that if i use a sprintpcs email address (who isnt my carrier anymore) i would be screwed. im over 60,000 gamerscore. Countless hours gone down the drain. So i modded my xbox burn the games and play them offline.Screw you MS. Oh yeah better step it up Sony is coming for you!

What to you do if you haven't even been able to play the new xbox 360 because we have been trying to figure out the id and password we used...can we just enter his gamertage now when he tries to use the nw console and it will ask for a new one? he has been playing this whole time up till yesterday and then his xbox took a crap. He has been waiting for Halo Reach to come out and the day it does he can't do anything. ????/

Some people aren't understanding the real problem. This isn't an issue with changing the Windows Live ID linked to an Xbox live account when that Windows Live ID is active. It's very easy to change from one Windows Live ID to another if the old one is still active. You just type your old information in and pick a new one. The problem represented on this issue is when you're currently assigned ID has become inactive. For example, I have my Xbox Live account linked to an old hotmail email. I can't access this e-mail anymore because I started using a different live account as my primary e-mail. It became inactive and now I can't change any settings on my account at all because I can't log in. Old credentials don't work and therefore I can't switch to a new one. This is really frustrating, especially since there was no indication that by using my xbox account that I wasn't technically logging in with those credentials and also no warning. Why can't an associated xbox account get sent a message saying that their windows live ID is about to expire. That's one big and easy way to solve this. Give the person a couple weeks notice, or more, that their account is going to be deactivated. Make sure it's done through e-mail and xbox messages.

That problem should've of been sorted awhile ago josh but obviously its not with everyone. My hotmail id expired as i was using another one and couldnt change any settings at all nor could i sign in with my old email as it was linked to xbox live, but one day when i tried to sign in i get a message saying my email id has expired and it let me put in the email address im using now and everything seems fine now.

This might of been posted before but this is what Microsoft said to do.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972159

They say if it's expired and not recovered you have to call support. If they are clueless make them go to that link and then go to the bottom of the page where it says more info and read what it says directly.

If they say call back tell them it's been a year and you demand something done because that article was made a year ago.

i simply cannot recover my account because i do not know what the associated email is. i'm sure if i knew the email, i would know the password, but i have no way to find out what the email is, or change it. i have been using the same hotmail email for years, and recovered it many times, but it now says the windows live ID isn't associated with the gamertag. Since I am not receiving the error message saying the windows live ID is inactive, those troubleshooting steps do not help me. I think i need some way to change what email is associated with my gamertag.

You might review the posts available at http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us... gamer tag. In short, you'll need to know the correct Windows Live ID credentials for teh account (the email address and password that you use to sign in to Windows Live).
