Phil,

Are you talking about disk space?
How are you determining that anything has changed by 7GB?

Cheers

OK, you are talking about disk space on your hard drive.

Windows will use disk space for a range of perfectly safe reasons without informing you. It is not easy to explain why 7GB has been used since you last checked the space on the drive without a detailed understanding of what you have been doing on the machine (web sites visited, applications run, CDs ripped, etc.)
If you continue to see a week-on-week reduction in free space then, yes, there may be something wrong but at the moment I do not see this as any cause for concern, especially as you have 193GB free.

Hi

You could try some of the utilities listed here:

I've not tried them myself so no idea how good they are.

Cheers

I tried this but it didn't help and now my memory is dropping every day by like 3 or 2 gb! One thing I have to know is how do you stop vista from backing up my files every 9 hours or so unless I want it to... Please reply.

is windows set to make a back up of your documents every 24 hours or anything ?
if you download 1 gig of music & the pc backs up that 1 gig
then that 1 gig download = 2 gig
exponential the more you download
and if the back up method uses compression, 1 gig of (pre compressed mp3) would be bigger as its already been compressed as mp3

example
bitmap photo BMP = 3mb, compress/convert to jpg, it becomes 1mb
jpeg photo JPG = 1mb, compress/convert to archive, it becomes 1.5mb
chances are one of your apps is performing a back up at some stage
MP3 is a compressed WAV, archiving an mp3 just makes it bigger, are you using compressed folders in windows to? because that would make the back up even bigger again, automated back-ups happen at a specific time, when ever your drive starts to chug along, bring up task manager & take a screen shot, then open it when the pc runs ok & take another screen shot, then google the names from the screen shot when its chuggin away, to see if any point to back up software (or virus information)

I don't know if it's set to make a back up or not. How do I find this? And if I do how do I stop it?

im not to sure, depends what software you have installed, and what version of windows you use,if its windows vista or windows 7, chances are its a back up thats taking place at a certain time
normaly when it takes place your hard disk will be moreactive & noisy, at that point if you hold CTRL then hold shift, and while your then holding them 2, press Esc (escape) it'll open task manager, then ide hit google and search the names, i think norton also has a back up schedule if thas installed (not sure about macfee)
