Setting Gamertag to a different Country/Region

When creating an Xbox Live Gamertag with the use of a Live Mail account, it seems to take over the contact details from the Live Mail account.
That's fine, because it saves time and all...

But:

When going to "Edit Contact Information" on Xbox.com, the only field that cannot be edited is the Country/Region field.
While you can change the same field in Live Mail, it won't help since the link between the Live Mail contact details and your Gamertag seems to vanish as soon as the Gamertag is created.

I've contacted Xbox support (here in The Netherlands) a while ago to ask for a solution, the answer that the person gave me was to create a new Gamertag, I wouldn't call that a solution if you would ask me.

I guess most people couldn't care less on what region their Gamertag is set, as long as everything works. But here's the catch, some things don't work when it's not set to the region you are in, other things are not what you would expect.

As an example, my account is set to United States, while my Xbox is a PAL machine, and I live in the Netherlands.
The two main problems are:

  • Cannot use Microsoft Points

  • Everything on Xbox Live is for the US, like, I get ads from Netflix etc.

Without a doubt, this restriction is there for a good reason.
But guess what? Some people actually move to different countries, nobody wants to create a new Gamertag and people actually buy Microsoft Points, that don't even work.

It seems that the Internet is plastered with the same question:
Why can't we change the region on our Gamertag?

Of course we've tried that ^^

See also a bit above:

That won't work. Once you assign a Windows Live ID to a Gamertag, the tag is associated with that ID's country, no matter what you do afterwards. There wouldn't be all these complaints if that would work.

It's just..mindboggling that Microsoft can't get into their minds that there are people who emigrate. Just a little bit of service would be such a great thing. I wouldn't even mind paying (not too much of course) for this service, because as it stands now, it's practically useless to me.

Unbelievable,

Ive stumbled onto the same problem myself: from the NL, bought points here, emailsettings in USA.

Ive read all the comments here and I think its just pathetic what microsoft has done. I usually dont like to compare the online xbox experience with the PS3, but really... Xbox starts to get more negative sides each week for me, and its starting to piss me off pretty bad..

I am a XBox supporter since 2002, when the first Xbox console launch, at that time I was study in UK but my email address set to HK. While I setup my Xbox Live ID there is NO WARNING message told me I would not able to change my Xbox Live region at the future and it just told me sign up with my Windows Live ID (Hotmail address).

Then I bought the Xbox 360 it give me 1 month Gold membership and I also didn't realize there will be any problem, it is because I can use that gold membership claim. (+ I didn't play online too much). I bought the elite and now I bought the New xbox 360 slim as well, there because it is a lot DLC currently so I would like to sign up gold membership as well. Then I realise that my Xbox Live account set country is HK instead of UK..

Now I am decided settle down in UK permanently, since Xbox Live ID cannot be change, only method is create a new Xbox Live ID... But I will lost all Xbox achievements (nearly 4 years achievements) and game saved as well.. it is really disappointed.. they thought people will not migrate to other country? They are giant computer industry why there is no solution to solve this ridiculous issue?

Only know how to sell console, never think about the gamer..

(Suggestion: Why they not accept the user change their xbox live ID country if the user have address proved? )

I am really disappointed.

As much as we'd all like to see it happen, this issue will never be fixed. Let's face it - at the end of the day it's Microsoft we're talking about here! If there's one thing they do well, it's that they give you the impression they care what you want. Then once they've got you hooked they back you into a corner and repeatedly hit you with a big stick until you either cave in to their terms, or make the move to Apple/Sony/Nintendo. Oh Billy G, if only just once you'd use your powers for good...

Have been reading this thread and totally feel for you guys; I wonder if you have thought about this. I have a japanese gamertag a canadian gamertag and a uk gamertag, I live in the uk and just use these other tags for free content that is not available in uk;(and some pay for stuff) for example I downloaded Aegis Wing from canada market place (not Available in uk, free game) on my canadian tag, that game i can now play on my uk tag and jap. Now this is because the first xbox you download your game to it will allow all gamertags on that xbox to play. Any further boxes that you redownload to, will only work on the original tag you bought it with. Is it not possible for you to create a new silver account(may need a gold account for some stuff?, get a 2 day trial or something) in your country that you live in now and buy your downloads with your actual countries points and then use your original gamertag to play them? I,ve had a few items off the canadian mp (trialshd) (gripshift) I could n't download cod add ons or anything off zune but everything else i wanted works and i play all the games on my uk gamertag and uk on canadian andjap respectivley. I really hope this is a sort of workaround for you and I apologise in advance if all this is way off base. I just want to try and help.

It is a good method.
However, people (including me) want to have everything on one account, especially in regards to gamerscore, friendslist etc.

Right now I'm just buying MS points for USA through eBay or any other shop that emails my code.
There's still some restrictions going on it seems. Like, I added MS points last month to buy Doom from Arcade, but it said that it's not available for my region (I have a US account and live in The Netherlands).

You would n't have to worry about gamerscore and friends list as you would just use the new gamertag set to your contries region to buy your downloads then play them with your original us gamertag. The only drawback I can really see is that you would not be able play the games on a different xbox with your us gamertag only the xbox you originally downloaded it onto. I use my other tags like this if i come across some cheap us points or free content not available in uk and then sign straight back into my uk account and play what ive just downloaded, so allways putting gamerscore on my uk account.

Not being able to buy Arcade games because of regional incompatibility is annoying (US Tag + PAL console + living in a country where Live isn't available). What if someone from the US bought the games I can't buy here using my account? Would I be able to download them, or I'd get the same error?

You would get the same error. Even if you already own the game you would still have to redownload it on your hard drive in your country. As far as I understand the region check is done at the beginning of the download therefore even though you own it, it still would n't download. If you sent your hard drive to someone you know in the us, they could download for you. Once you get it back all games would work as the region check is on the download not the actual game, That could be a costly business though.

It might be worth creating a few different silver gamertags for countries near you that are supported and see whether the restrictions are the same as your us tag and then use the method I spoke of above for downloading and playing games. (dont forget it does n't matter what tag downloaded it all tags on your xbox can play it) Also recently I realised that you can play them on a 2nd xbox with all gamertags, just simply load game up to menu screen with the tag you downloaded on then sign out and sign your original tag in. Game will play perfectly until you exit, it will then revert back to a trial game. (probably obvious this one?)

I really hope my ramblings have helped at least a few of you as I love xboxlive and could n't contemplait not being able to download what I want.

Hundreds of people have the same problem every month, and all the possible reasons why the country can't be changed are simply ridiculous excuses not to put in any work and actually show they give a f@ck about all the people who pay for xbox live.

People move around (four countries on three continents within the last five years for myself) and I sure as hell won't make new accounts for every place I live and start from scratch with my gamertag.

I got by with buying online points for my US account for a while, but it's getting to a point where I just don't care anymore.

You, microsoft, pissed in my face for the last time.
In a few minutes some poor schmuck is coming over to buy my xbox and games and once it's out of the door I won't ever buy another xbox again.

PS3 all the way from now on.
Fuck you microsoft.

Add me to this sorry list...

I am coming up to the end of a 1 year Gold membership, but I have lived in the UK for almost 2 years.

The main issue here is MS's contempt for their customers as well as the fact there is NO CLEAR WARNING upon initial sign up to Xbox Live as to how much your region set on your Windows Live account will forever more effect your decisions and choices when using Xbox Live.

Bullshit.

On another note I like heydude's idea of setting up dummy accounts to at least gain access to region specific content. It's a small way to say "eff you" to MS and this ridiculous set up of theirs.

Looking at Games On Demand it displays the original Halo being available to download, but lo and behold upon investigating further it's not available in my region. Since my region is locked to Australia then why the hell does it show downloadable products that I can't even download?! Is this only because I am viewing them from the UK and only UK users can download this game? If this is the case then what truly is the reason for locking users regions if all they're going to do is dangle proverbial carrots in front of their avatar's faces?!

$%#@!

Having a some what similar "region" problem. My account region is Canada, but I moved to Saudi Arabia. I bought 4000 Microsoft points at a local game store and tried to redeem it. Obviously you guys know what happend...it didn't work.

"Please enter a valid code", it said.

So I call Xbox, in the US ($1/min), stayed a half an hour on the phone with about 4 agents, each one of them having higher authority than the other. When I got to the last guy he's like he has to present this issue with his superiors, BUT, what they will do as a solution is email me within 48hrs with a new redemtion code which correspondes to my account region.

I asked him if I should just make a new gamer tag for this region, which he replied "No".

Well, I'm still waiting...24hrs gone so far. That's my story thus far.

By the way, he said, "I assure you sir, this is an extremely rare problem. I understand how you feel". Yeah right.

They just called me and said, "Sir, we would just like to update you that we are looking at your problem and if you like I can call you back again to inform you of further updates in the next 48hrs".

I was like, "Huh?! You guys said you'll email me with a new code. Now I have to wait for you to call in another 48hrs?!"

He replies, "Sorry sir. If you're not satisfied you can call 1 800 4MY XBOX. Thank you for being patient, and thank you for calling Xbox...goodbye.

Click!

So...I'm just going to try making another ID set for the US, because I think they're selling US Microsoft Points in Saudi Arabia. Reason I think that is I don't see anything written on it about its region being Asia, Europe, etc. Rather, it just says "Made in the USA".

Anyways, I'll keep you guys posted.

Well, I did what I said I would do...about a month ago, lol. Anyways, got screwed. Saudi does sell US Mircosoft Points. End of story, I can not access any Movies. Everything else works. Called Xbox and they said, "Sorry sir, we cannot do anything to solve your problem". So, too bad for me. 4000 points down the drain.

EVERYONE WHO HAS THIS PROBLEM;

I don't know whether to believe what I am seeing, reading or hearing BUT I think they've finally solved our problem!

I was just browsing through the Inside Xbox section on Xbox Live and came across something incredibly interesting by chance, a feature on there called, wait for this...

MOVED COUNTRIES? HOW TO MIGRATE YOUR XBOX LIVE ACCOUNT

I can't friggin' believe this, there's a whole video there explaining how it will go down and that you won't lose anything associated with your account! Everybody check it out! It's supposed to be available in November, but they didn't give a specific date!

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE NEWS!

Thanks for posting Blake Swedishlastname, looks promising!
This sounds like a nightmare however:

Q: Will I be able to re-download purchased content after migration?
A: Our goal is to allow members to re-download all of their purchased content after migrating accounts, and we're actively working to address this. However, at this point in time, once you migrate you will no longer be able to re-download content. Members should re-download purchased content to their hard drive or USB flash drive prior to migrating.

That reminds me....
I hope they fix the Purchase history page to display only purchased stuff, without the free demos/video cluttering the page.

^ Hmmmm, that's definitely a grey area.

I am not exactly sure how you would save for instance an avatar's costume to your hard drive besides the way it's done automatically when you leave the customization page and I definitely have no idea how to save to a USB.

I think I will definitely be waiting for a few "guinea pigs" to try the migration before I do so I can guage what I stand at losing.

The gamer score is the main thing though!

Q: Which countries are eligible for migration?
A: Effective Nov 10th, we will enable migration from any country to the following new LIVE countries: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Russia and South Africa.

Does this mean you can only change your egion to one of those new countries? :( If so that's still no solution for most of us... *sighs*

Microsoft provided this solution for a limited time so people that created XBOX Live accounts outside of their domestic markets could now migrate to their new domestic markets. You couldn't migrate your account from an original XBOX Live market to another original XBOX Live market (e.g.: move from France to Spain).

Anyway, this option is no longer available.

Starting to think microsoft takes pleasure in seeing us suffer while we just never really stop using our Xboxes...

The only way we're ever gonna get a positive response from microsoft is if we all stop using xbox live at the same time. Like hundreds of thousands of people... which I'm sure matches the amount of people having this problem.

But yea... never gonna happen -_-

The plague of the digital age is digital rights management. Unfortunately, the way digital content is handled, consumers have little to no rights. The only way to rise against "the system" is through boycotts and complains.

Yep, I've got this problem too, I'm a resident of the UK.

When I made my Hotmail email account 13 years ago, I hadn't bothered to specify a region. I was only 16, gimme a break! So, surprise surprise, when I made my XBox Live account with that email address, it ASSUMED(!!) I was from the USA! Because everyone loves America and therefore would want to be from there if they hadn't specified a region!

Of course, I didn't notice anything was wrong until my one month free Gold membership had ran out, and then it wouldn't let me enter credit card details to buy a new one. But of course by then I had racked up a considerable gamerscore, had save games etc. and I didn't want start all over again. I found out about the assumption of USA residence from another forum, which I will dig up a link for and post here when I get a chance.

It really boggles the mind how an international megacompany giant like Microsoft can not have a department in their help centres that will deal with people changing their country by allowing peope to send proof of address, i.e. bank statement, credit card bill etc. I would even be willing to send a copy of my passport or drivers licence!

And get this - anyone out there use iTunes? Check out the iTunes Store page. Right at the bottom under "Manage" there is something interesting to press. It says "Change Country". Seems that Apple is on the ball with looking after their customers. And iTunes is very much involved with the downloading of songs, films, etc. by using money. Why are Microsoft being so useless about it?

It's a fact that MS just likes to screw people over, that's why they're being so useless about it -_-
