Setting Gamertag to a different Country/Region

  • Updated 5 years ago
When creating an Xbox Live Gamertag with the use of a Live Mail account, it seems to take over the contact details from the Live Mail account.
That's fine, because it saves time and all...

But:

When going to "Edit Contact Information" on Xbox.com, the only field that cannot be edited is the Country/Region field.
While you can change the same field in Live Mail, it won't help since the link between the Live Mail contact details and your Gamertag seems to vanish as soon as the Gamertag is created.

I've contacted Xbox support (here in The Netherlands) a while ago to ask for a solution, the answer that the person gave me was to create a new Gamertag, I wouldn't call that a solution if you would ask me.

I guess most people couldn't care less on what region their Gamertag is set, as long as everything works. But here's the catch, some things don't work when it's not set to the region you are in, other things are not what you would expect.

As an example, my account is set to United States, while my Xbox is a PAL machine, and I live in the Netherlands.
The two main problems are:

  • Cannot use Microsoft Points

  • Everything on Xbox Live is for the US, like, I get ads from Netflix etc.

Without a doubt, this restriction is there for a good reason.
But guess what? Some people actually move to different countries, nobody wants to create a new Gamertag and people actually buy Microsoft Points, that don't even work.

It seems that the Internet is plastered with the same question:
Why can't we change the region on our Gamertag?

So this is kinda related to this topic, but not specifically to the whole MS points and DLC problems that everyone seemed to be experiencing and posting about over the past few years. I just moved to Germany from the United States and I kept two of my three long term (since Xbox Live was first launched) GamerTags with me. I have purchased and spent MS points using my US region Tags while in Germany. I have successfully downloaded various DLC, such as videos, trials, and new maps/missions for multiple games with no issues. Going even a step further, I have no problem accessing any of that DLC at all.

My problem comes in when I try to access any online play that involves "searching for a match/session/game". Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War, and others will have me sitting in the pre-game lobby just waiting and waiting and waiting. I actually fell asleep and woke up over an hour later last night and Gears of War 3 was still searching for a match even though there were over 70k players online in my region.

I have already changed my NAT to Open and changed my country to Germany in the Dashboard Settings but I don't know what else to do... All this jazz about only purchasing new GamerTags will work is definately NOT a solution for me and I would rather rub my D in broken glass than do that.

If anyone has experienced and possibly overcome this specific hurdle, could you please reply to this specific thread post? I would be much obliged.

Hopefully this is something retardedly simple that I will feel really dumb about for approximately 30 seconds while I wait for the first round of Horde to finally load on my screen.

Thanks

I got my first xbox here in Canada and Im not sure what happened during the initial sign up process, my gamertag was set to United States. Luckily, I have a sister there, so I just used her address and my phone number. Luckily still, I have a Canada Paypal account that works with my xbox live account. I was able to use to get 3 months 60% off promo and even buy microsoft points.

problems i have so far is kinna un-related..
- microsoft billing double charged me, at first i got the 9.99/month then i switched to 3 months for 19.99. But just now, they charged my paypal with 9.99
- FIFA12 cannot sign in to EA servers, EA is still troubleshooting my account as to why - i have a feeling my gamertag being US has something to do with it... but GoW3, MoH, NBA2K10, Streetfighter IV and other xbox games so far worked for me.

i've also realized that keeping my gamertag as a US gives me more edge in terms of services/videos available in US that are not in canada. ill just have to use paypal for purchases - or as a last resort get my sis in the US to buy xbox points cards for me.

So I take there is no solution to this problem yet? I've been living the UK for the last 18 months and it hasn't bothered me that my dash is still showing all NZ content etc because NZ live service was pretty shit to begin with.

However, since the latest update the UK can get LOVEFILM and 4oD and soon BBC Iplayer and this is something that I would use but because my account was registered to NZ i can't as it shows all NZ Live content.

If I was to make another account, on the same Xbox 360 HDD, and have it registered in the UK, would it then show? Can two different accounts on the same HDD show two different countries content?

If anyone understands what I'm trying to say, help would be appreciated!

You should be able to change the country once a year.

Microsoft is still working on my case. It's been nearly six months now.
They need to reactivate all the DLC I ever bought. Which is a pain since Microsoft isn't responsible for most of that DLC. They need to ask all the developers for permission.

Sadly I get almost zero information and response aside from that reason.

I have the same problem - just moved to a different country and I can't update my gamer region. This is quite frustrating and I hope MS will come up with a solution some time soon

I have had the same issue since forever (registered my Live on the original Xbox in Sweden and then moved to Finland) and I'm saddened to see there is no solution out there. MSFT sucks ass in this case and I'm pretty sure this is illegal in the EU...people should have the right to change their personal information MSFT has stored.

My main aggravation now is that I can't link my new Windows Phone to my Xbox account as I can't even move my Xbox account to be linked to my new Finnish Live account that I'm using with my phone. This is total BS and should be fixed asap.

Microsoft is simply snubbing EU regulations. And they will keep doing until people like us stop complaining with Microsoft and go straight to our Data Protection authorities in our respective countries. Check out www.itisourdata.com

My Xbox account is linked to the UK but I moved to Ireland about 8 months ago and I have problems using Zune and other services I wish to pay for. I do not find creating a new account just for the purpose of this an acceptable solution.

Why not just recognise which region the Xbox is currently in by IP address or a similar method? Other platforms already do this.

If you live in the EU, then I think there is a case to be made that Microsoft is in contravention of EU Law on this issue of not being able to change the country in your account.

There's a petition set up here: https://www.change.org/petitions/micr...

And more information on the issue is to be found here: http://itisourdata.com

You're welcome! But again, Microsoft will never listen to us, until they receive a call from the EU comission. Everybody need to write to their Data Protection agency in their country of residence in order to file a complain against Microsoft. More information at www.itisourdata.com

I've read lots of comments here but I'm still unsure of the answer...
I'm in the Philippines, with a US XBox 360. I already signed in with a french hotmail account. If I just create a new XBox Live account, this time saying I'm in the USA, will I be able to redeen US MS points? As well a use DLC code bought on ebay from the USA?
I've read a comment saying that there might be some checks on the IP address, which would show I'm in the Philippines, not in the USA...

I am having the same problem, I'm from the Philippines too and purchased XBOX 360 bundled with Kinect from USA (that has 2 Free games, Carnival and Kinect Adventures).

However, the Carnival game should be downloaded via Xbox Marketplace, whenever I enter the game code and hit download it says "This item is not currently not available in your location". Is there other way to download this game completely without receiving this error message? I see that the migrate Xbox account is already unavailable, is there other workaround in order for me to be able to download and play this game? I paid for it anyway. This is so frustrating. Please HELP!!!

Did you say you're from the Philippines in your XBox live account? If yes you can try to create a new account and this time say you're from the US. If you're account is already from the US, then there's probably some checks on your IP address, and there's probably not much to do, unless you manage to make your XBox go through a proxy. Actually it shouldn't be hard to do, you just need to find a working US proxy...

Folks,

Bear in mind that this limitation also affects Windows Phones, since they share the same backend for their respective e-commerce platforms (XBOX Live, Zune/Windows Phone marketplace). That means that if you ever decided to get a Windows Phone and you use your Windows Live ID with it, you will find that your phone will be "tethered" to the country you specified at the time you signed up for XBOX Live!

So if you are having this issue with XBOX Live at this stage, then I strongly suggest you to stay way from Windows Phone devices as well. www.itisourdata.com

Folks, Kids .. it doesn't matter. If you live in the United States then XBOX is very cool. If you live ANYWHERE else it sucks. That is the result of the stupid shenanigans people have to go through with XBOXLive and points. Nevermind Microsoft. You don't need 3 billion more potential customers. You will do just fine missing the boat on millions of the most avid gamers in the world and you really shouldn't care that you are also missing the boat on mobile computing, smartphones, tablets and international gaming. You are making enough millions that you can afford to let billions of dollars slip through your fingers. You can survive on the American market, there is plenty there. When you look at other companies soaking up all the glory of that huge market you are missing out on, you can comfort yourself with that. Well until you lose that too.

I am completely disjointed in the company that virtually invented pc gaming and tablets, yet can't seem to get any traction at all in the fields that they should dominate. Yet another American company to miss their new defining moment.

I feel the same way about MS. Apple iTunes has no problem changing locations for you, MS should take a leaf out of their book.

We are happy to inform that two Windows Phone / XBOX Live users have successfuly migrated their accounts from one country to another by following the instructions contained in www.itisourdata.com website. If Microsoft refuses to migrate your account, you must raise the issue with your local data protection agency/office and complain that Microsoft is refusing to update your personal information. Oh my god, can't believe they don't let you change the country/region. Such a simple thing, it's not asking much. My original Hotmail account was created in the 90s, I never selected a region and it automatically defaulted to USA even though I was in the UK. When I created my Xbox live account I didn't know it would take the region from the Hotmail settings.

Now I can't download content. Even with Windows 8, to download games requires an Xbox live account, but when I sign in it tells me I am in the wrong region. But I can't change it. What the flip?

You can keep everything, your apps, high scores etc etc ! Just go to the support page of xbox live (chat or phone) and explain the situation !

So I got curious and went to check my account...

my billing.microsoft.com now have 3 dropdowns to choose

CA - Personal Account
--- which, when selected my Microsoft points are there and my current address now, which is in Canada with my primary e-mail address. When I try to edit it, i cannot change the country, but everything else is correct.

CA - Business Account
--- which has my name on it, my yahoo email address and nothing else. There's a "delegate" button but im not sure what that is for

US - Personal Account
--- which is what was set before, the last time I've logged in to billing this is the only account information and this is using my sister's address in Maryland.

However, when I logged into xbox.com, my Billing Information is still the US account. I've booted my Xbox console and it still shows the US account.

The last thing I did was to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8, and during WIndows 8 upgrade it asked me for my address and I was able to input my current address which is in Canada.

Maybe I'll make that call as suggested here.

Here is the transcript of the conversation I had with a support employee of Xbox Life..... This was the solution...

You are now chatting with 'Sandra'.
Sandra: Thank you for contacting Xbox Chat Support. My name is Sandra and I will be assisting you today. Please give me a minute to check your issue.
Wouter: ok
Sandra: Hi, Wouter. I apologize about your issue today. I will definitely be glad to help you with this.
Sandra: You want to migrate/change your account to a different region or country, is that right WOuter?
Wouter: Yes, that's right
Wouter: WHen I check billing.microsoft.com, my region is US, but I life in The Netherlands... So I can't add an creditcard to my ID...
Wouter: which means I can't buy apps for my windows phone
Sandra: And I understand that. Payment options have regional restrictions.
Sandra: And I can see that the account was indeed registered in the US.
Sandra: Shall we get started with the account migration now?
Wouter: Yes please, are there any consequences ?
Sandra: Hmmm. Let me explain.
Sandra: For the migration to complete, it will take 5-6 weeks for us to do it. And while the process is on the go, Gold subscription can not be accessed so you can not play online or stream movies/videos,etc.
Sandra: But account can still be accessed though.
Wouter: oke, that's no problem
Sandra: Excellent. I just need you to complete your account info, Dennis please.
Sandra: Sign in to your account on www.xbox.com and please click My Account
Sandra: And at the lower left, please click COntact Billing Information and complete the fields there.
Sandra: You might need to enter any US address if you have none.
Wouter: Well, I have non, do I need to make one up ?
Sandra: Yes please. You can just google any address, Wouter.
Wouter: done
Sandra: Thank you.
Sandra: Great. I see a New York address now.
Sandra: What will happen for this, Wouter is once the request I am created will be submitted, the migration team will contact you personally about the update for the process thru e-mail.
Sandra: And what will be the best e-mail address you want them to contact you please?
Wouter: w**********k@gmail.com
Sandra: Thanks I will need your console ID too.
Sandra: Please go to Settings>System>COnsole Settings>System Info
Wouter: Do you mean from an xbox ?
Sandra: Yes please.
Wouter: I don't have one....
Sandra: Is this for Games For Windows Live?
Wouter: ? I do have windows live games on my windows phone...
Sandra: I see. That is fine. I can indicate that the account migration request is not for xbox.
Wouter: oke
Sandra: And request submitted for you, Wouter. Expect an e-mail from ye team that handles the migration within the next few days.
Sandra: Would you want a reference number for the request?
Wouter: oke, yes please, that would be great
Sandra: Sure Wouter, It is 1*********3.
Sandra: And anything else for today?
Wouter: oke, no thanks, I'll be waiting for the mail for the tranfser team :P
Sandra: The pleasure to help is mine, Wouter. I've a little favor to ask though. :)
Sandra: Please end the chat properly for me by clicking the black x mark beside the envelope icon.
Sandra: That will be greatly appreciated, Wouter.
Sandra: Have a great day/night.
Sandra: Thanks for contacting Xbox Customer Support and have a great day!

I've just finished the online chat with a Microsoft agent, and my account is now in the process of being changed! I'm so excited! Yay! After all this time...

The simplest way is to go to the Microsoft support page and chat online with an agent, saves you sitting there with your ear to the phone waiting on hold. I was 21st in the queue when I joined but just looked at stuff online til I got connected!
