Setting Gamertag to a different Country/Region

When creating an Xbox Live Gamertag with the use of a Live Mail account, it seems to take over the contact details from the Live Mail account.
That's fine, because it saves time and all...

But:

When going to "Edit Contact Information" on Xbox.com, the only field that cannot be edited is the Country/Region field.
While you can change the same field in Live Mail, it won't help since the link between the Live Mail contact details and your Gamertag seems to vanish as soon as the Gamertag is created.

I've contacted Xbox support (here in The Netherlands) a while ago to ask for a solution, the answer that the person gave me was to create a new Gamertag, I wouldn't call that a solution if you would ask me.

I guess most people couldn't care less on what region their Gamertag is set, as long as everything works. But here's the catch, some things don't work when it's not set to the region you are in, other things are not what you would expect.

As an example, my account is set to United States, while my Xbox is a PAL machine, and I live in the Netherlands.
The two main problems are:

  • Cannot use Microsoft Points

  • Everything on Xbox Live is for the US, like, I get ads from Netflix etc.

Without a doubt, this restriction is there for a good reason.
But guess what? Some people actually move to different countries, nobody wants to create a new Gamertag and people actually buy Microsoft Points, that don't even work.

It seems that the Internet is plastered with the same question:
Why can't we change the region on our Gamertag?

I have a question here; it has been a couple of days since I made the request and I got notified by XBOX of my subscription being cancelled and moved to sliver is this normal process of migration (since my Gold Sub still has 8 months before ending and I have auto renew ON)? My COD Elite is the same being cancelled (although it should have been finished but the people at COD decided to extend it till March 2013?

I just got that email too... the support person never told me about that, but I assume it will be reinstated when the account gets transferred. It had better! Reading through Wouter's transcript above, they do say that Gold subscription features can not be accessed during the switchover process.

Yeah, sorry for not expanding on the process earlier, was kinda busy >.>
Anyways, as most people above wrote, I went to the (US) Microsoft page, and then requested support through chat. After having been told all the consequences as listed by Wouter above, I agreed, then he told me it could take up to 6 weeks.

However, today, 4 days later, I received an email that the migration process is complete.

Somehow I couldn't complete the process through Firefox though, gave me an error, so I had to switch to explorer, and get back in the queue (another 45 minutes, yay XD), only then the problem was that, I think because I live in the Netherlands, it wouldn't let me click on support -> chat. So my only option was to call or e-mail. But this was fixed by going through the https://commerce.microsoft.com/ website, not entirely sure how it works but I ended up being able to chat with a US support guy. So if you have any troubles of this kind, try this, it worked for me.

Also, if you go to that site Microsoft will attempt to send you a code by phone, but somehow they picked my landline to send a message to, even though I haven't registered that phone number in my hotmail account, but if you click "I haven't received a code" you'll get the option of receiving a code by voice message, that worked for me at least.

E-mail:

Dear Zekk Distor

This mail is confirmation that you successfully switched your XBOX Live account from United States to Netherlands .

Thank you for using Microsoft Online Services.

Xbox LIVE Team

As for the Gold memberships, they told me that everything would be cancelled, and for subscriptions with (I think) more than a month of time left they'd give you a new one for that duration. So if you had 6 months left they'd give you another 6 months.

Do they automatically renew the Gold subscription? Because mine got cancelled the day after my call, then two days after that I've got the email saying my account region has successfully been switched. But my Gold Subscription hasn't been re-instated yet... :(

It took me a total of five calls I think. First time I didnt know I needed a console ID, then I gave them that, but the idiot (Curtis) tried to migrate it to the US instead of Canada. They didnt since the console is Canadian! Thats another important fact, console needs to be from the right region to be migrated to it. If so, use the windows phone excuse I guess. Then I thought I could just update the request, nope new, so I had to call again once home near xbox. Then I called to get the month back that I was given for having called them every month for a year. One month gold. pfffft. Then they took it away again and sent me another code after. No one actually told me any of this :/ Few days later, it was migrated. I still have the British account listed on my billing.ms.com page, so I will call them about that to see if it cannot be removed.

hey, i leave in country that doesnt have xbox live service, so i registered my account on microsoft live using russia as my country. now, i can see that much content couldnt be bought from store due to region restrictions. trying to transfer gamertag to a us account and got error message, again, about region.

well, i could say that microsoft, or game editors are just refusing to take my money for their product and supporting piracy =______=

anyway, my question is does it make sense to contact microsoft support and ask them to change my region, so i can spend more money on them, or not?

sorry for typos, writing at night, wanting to sleep badly, on my tablet.

Now after 4 weeks of making my request to migrate I received an email from MS telling me to click on a link in the lower right corner of www.xbox.com/accounts after signing in. Anyone have any idea what that link is cause I tried every link on the page but it got me no where?! :(

I reckon it's because of the new Windows Phone, they finally had to allow region changes. But of course they didn't care when it was a just a bunch of gamers with a problem lol!

Maybe because its too complicated for them to understand. Its ok for them to create new accounts but for me, nope. I wanted to maintain the same account wherever i go because i bought so many stuff already, i don't wanna lose the points, history, existing Xbox friends and of course we wanted to get most out of our Xbox Live on the region that we are at.
