Silverlight not working with Netflix on Intel Mac

  • Question

I've installed Silverlight 2.0 so I can use Netflix on my Intel Mac. All I get is a blank page in Safari and Firefox when I click on watch now. Any suggestions?

Have you reported this to Netflix since it is their site? http://www.netflix.com/Help?action=2&...=

Netflix is sending users to http://web.sldrm.video.msn.com/d1/sld... to test if silverlight is working 100%. Per Netflix if the video on the site doesn't display correctly the only recourse is to contact MS tech support and pay $59. What are the steps for an average user to resolve the issue of a black screen when running silverlight? There are a ton of reported problems involving black screens and Silverlight running on multiple browsers on multiple platforms. MS should get this killer scenario working ASAP and improve the troubleshooting process (arguably there isn't a troubleshooting process for end users today, for example no errors in the event log on Vista and no Silverlight log file or error message). I updated my Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 64-bit Vista drivers (WHQL approved video card) with the latest driver version, which solved the problem for 3 days. This isn't a problem on my low end systems running 32-bit Vista.

Steve-o: are you still not able to get it work, have you seen the listed solutions below? Feel free to reach out to me (timheuer@microsoft.com) for some assistance.

No... but I've read on line about other Intel Mac owners that are happily using the service. I tried Netflix's FAQs and didn't find anything. I guess I should try their email support.

Nhoj: I'm not sure what the problem may be for this. Have you tried again? It is running fine for me on my mac (as you noted as well with other users).

I have this same problem. I have a new iMac, running latest version of Leopard, and using Safari. I have tried fiddling with the settings in Safari, but no joy. . . .

Betty, can you do me a favor and visit http://timheuer.com/wpfe/versiontest/ and tell me what you see? I want to make sure at least that Silverlight is installed properly. Feel free to email me at timheuer@microsoft.com as well.

I go to that link and I'm getting No compatible version of Silverlight detected. Please install.

I've already installed Silverlight 3 times..

Tim, when i go to the link, i just see a white screen--when I "play" on the instant watch on Netflix, I just see a black screen. I didn't seem to have any problems on install, and on my computer, the plug-in is in HD/Library/Internet plug-ins.

Betty/Njoy: can you go to http://timheuer.com/wpfe/versiontest/ and tell me what you see? Do you only see a white screen there as well? Can you right-click on the white area (near upper left corner) and see if you get a Silverlight Preferences option?

All I get is white... I right clicked on the white... got the Silverlight preferences and I opened it. Apparently, plug in is installed it's just not working. Is Silverlight a stand alone plugin just like Flash or are their other components required like Quicktime and Filp4Mac?

Nhoj: no other plugins are required, yes it is a stand-alone plugin. I'm doing some research on potential issues some of you are facing.

FYI... I have a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with 2 GB of Ram running OS X 10.5.5

Maybe one of my other internet plugins is interfering with Silverlight... I'll try to reboot with only Silverlight and the basic ones like Java, Quicktime etc.

I found the answer... actually, I should say somebody else did:
http://silverlight.net/forums/p/45845...

It's a font issue. I'm an art director I use a lot of fonts so I manage my system fonts with my font application (which is highly recommended). Silverlight doesn't like that and wants the Arial.ttf font in the HD > Library > Fonts folder. (I restarted after moving the font just to make sure).

Fixed it for me... works fine now. Thank you for your help timheuer... even though you didn't find the problem I still appreciated your help.

Thanks

This was driving me nuts... I would have never guessed it was a font issue. It's particularly strange because the font should be active... apparently, Silverlight doesn't like the Extensis Suitcase version of active. I suppose I should let Extensis know about the issue.

Thanks again!

I can reproduce this problem by removing all of the fonts from /Library/Fonts folder. I am not sure which fonts Silverlight needs.

Arial.ttf is the font Silverlight must have.

Make sure this font is in the Library at the System level not the User. There is a font folder in the: Macintosh HD > Users > (user name) > Library > Fonts ...this is NOT the right place. You want: Macintosh HD > Library > Fonts

It's probably a good idea to restart after that to make sure your Mac knows it's there.

This is interesting. I am a graphic designer also, and I have been experimenting a lot lately with managing fonts in different ways to try and reduce the number of unnecessary fonts on the system. I use Suitcase Fusion, and suitcase acknowledges and provides an extensive overview of font managemnt in a pdf at http://www.extensis.com/en/downloads/...
These issues are mainly for font power users, and wouldn't affect the average home user . . .

Anyway, thanks Tim for all your help, and thanks Nhoj for figuring this out!

My problem is that it tells me that I need to download Silverlight and when i do and it goes to install (i have tried both Safari and Firefox (both up to date)) it says "no mountable file systems"

So, the font stuff is a red herring or at least an unrelated issue to what I've seen. For me I had to remove Silverlight manually (/Library/Internet Plugins/Silverlight + ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight)

Empty trash can and reinstall. (Optionally restart before reinstalling)

I'm getting the following error:

Silverlight Application Storage Error
Error Code: N8007

I removed the fonts, deleted the plug in, and reinstalled Silver light + restart and I still can't access it. Any thoughts? Not sure what I've missed. Thanks!
