    CH,
Thanks for your message. We are proud to have announced our partnerships with Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light and are working with them on establishing their automated data feeds. We hope to have these available as soon as possible. Until then you may opt to manually input your energy data from your bill.

    Regards,
    Karen

  • I’m disappointed
Why announce the partnerships if the product isn't done yet? I found a link to Hohm on the Seattle City Light homepage. I'd expect the data feed to be in place by then.

I completely agree with Joe. Hold off announcing that we can use Hohm within Seattle until the feeds are working. I'm now sitting here having to refresh over and over again waiting on everything to work correctly.

MidAmerican is also missing from the midwest...

I have entered 2 months worth but find it tedius and time consuming and if it is going to be that it will not get used. People will not use a manual process period.

    Hi,
We appreciate your feedback. The Hohm team is working closely with partners to enable users to view their energy consumption through the Hohm service. Customers of these utilities can receive recommendations and monitor energy usage today by entering their utility data manually. Additionally, the service will also provide recommendations without the utility data. Meanwhile, we are establishing partnerships with additional utilities – if you like to get automated data feeds from your utility let us know and we will inform your provider.

    Regards,
    Travis

  • I’m short on time and pretty annoyed
I'm with Joe and CH -- spent a lot of time entering my home information, and have no desire to spend even more time entering data from my bill. This feels like a premature launch -- even if it is a beta. Some add'l items -- home input isn't condo-sensitive (common walls, other condo characteristics), and some of the drop downs -- like types of window coverings -- weren't anywhere near complete. Would love to use this tool, but please don't waste my time.

    Hello dl, et al,

We completely understand your frustration with the data feed issue. We plan to have this resolved soon and hope that you will revisit your Hohm profile once the automated feeds are in place.

We have noted your feedback on the condos and options in the drop downs. Hohm's initial design is to single family homes as they typically consume the most energy. However, we plan to add specific options for condos and apartments in future iterations. In the meantime, you can leave the question blank and Hohm will leverage the most typical option for your area to calculate your Energy Report.

    Thank you - Nicole

  • I’m bitter for having wasted my time.
i spent 20 minutes answering 200 questions only to get information such as: I can save money by switching to cf bulbs, i can lower the temp on my hot water heater, i can insulate my hot water heater, i can put my computer into hibernation mode when im not using it. what is the value in this site?

i live in 98052 zip (SAME AS MICROSOFT) and you tell me you don't know about Puget Sound Energy. bogus.
    • Karen (Official Rep) July 14, 2009 21:12
Eric, Thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry you feel like you wasted your time.

With your actual (or estimated) energy usage and energy costs (based on locale), the recommendations will give you savings and beneftis information targeted to you. For example, the lower your water heater temp estimates are not the same for everyone - it is specific to what we know about your energy costs and where your current temp is set (130 vs 140).

Would you be willing to share what you were expecting?

With regard to PSE, we are still working with this partner on establsihing the automated data feeds.

    Hi KirkN,

Thanks for your feedback. We are actively pursuing integrating utilities from around the country into Hohm and will announce on our site when their data feeds are active. We appreciate your patience while we get this in place. Please feel free to suggest other utilities that you use in Southern California as well.

    Thank you - Nicole

  • I’m neglected
It'd be nice to get some kind of transparency regarding the SPL and other "announced" partnerships - what's the status? You guys said you were working on this a month ago.

Egid, I'm sorry you feel neglected. :( As soon as we can provide an offiical available date, we will post it here. We are working with our announced partners on their implementations to ensure that customers have a great experience once the data feeds are live. Thanks for your patience...

  • Fred,
Thanks for your question! You may have already done this, but you can enter the name of your energy provider in the Hohm system (and that you would like automated data feeds provided) which allows us to contact utility companies based on the interest from their customers. you can do this on the Energy provider page - select "My provider is not listed" and then you can enter Con Ed in the text box.

We are already speaking with many providers around the US and hopefully we can make announcements as soon as agreements are reached.

    Kind Regards
Karen, Group Program manager, Microsoft Hohm

6 months on, and still no support for PSE right here in Microsoft's back yard.
http://EarthAid.net had PSE support the day they launched and they have neither the resources or reach Microsoft can bring to bear on the problem.
At least http://Google.org/powermeter doesn't directly cover the PSE area, but if you have a TED5000-C/G - http://www.theenergydetective.com/sto... - it reports directly to Google so you don't have to wait for the provider to come on line...

How about providing a list of companies that you do support? Again most companies Electric and Gas are now providing historical bills. What is the hold up here. I would bet the supported energy providers is ZERO!

  • My utility BGE (Baltimore Gas Electric) has smart programmable energy thermostat and also turn off A/C PeakRewards program. These featurs could be integrated into your application. If HOHM is to become a centralized account system you'll want to offer the energy control function that I receive logged into BGE.

You also have not partnered with BGE for a data feed at present.

    Hello mcaslan,

With regards to the BGE rewards program; this is good to know and thanks for your insight into possible new features for Hohm--we love to hear things like this.

Also, we are working to expand our partnerships to new energy partners so stay tuned! :)

The first posts on this thread are from 11 months ago about Puget Sound Energy not being available as an energy supplier for 98052. This is still the case today, despite posts/assurances to the contrary. Really disappointing. Also my street address which works perfectly fine on Bing maps and Google maps is rejected as unrecognized/invalid by Hohm.

Hi Rahul--thanks for taking the time to comment, and for trying out Hohm. I feel your disappointment about PSE and while there isn't a date to give you, we're really eager for the integration, too. Regarding your street address, it's possible that we don't have data for your home. If you live in an apartment or condo, we don't have data for your home yet but will look to add more homes in the near future. However, you can still fill out your home profile, see your energy breakdown, and get energy-saving recommendations. The application doesn't fully support multi-family residences yet, but stay tuned!

    Thanks,
    Holly

is this a place to list other providers, or is the title just misleading?

  • well after finding Google Power Meter, I see why SDG&E is missing- they seem to be partnered up together. i wonder how much money changes hands through contracts for "my data"? should be that i can have my data sent to who ever i want; Google, MS, whoever.

Kinda cool though how I can see the hourly avg. power usage on Googles PM; is that how it would look on Hohm if I had chart options other than YEAR available? Why are these options grayed out anyhow? So is it correct that I could bypass this SDG&E:Google partnership by using the BlueLine WiFi unit? The Google version doesn't provide nearly as much info as Hohm right now.

  • I’m a person with a questioning attitude
so maybe you should reiterate that if somebody's power co. doesn't support Hohm, but they really want their data, then just get the Blue Line unit for ~$150 at Newegg, Fry's, etc.... that seems to be everyones gripe here.

btw I recognize that eventually such a unit will instantly become money wasted once agreements between Hohm & co's are finally made...

however, nothing happens around these western parts w/o money being made off of it, so I see Blue Line (the only unit advertised on Hohm) profits and a BlueLIne/MS partnership as being part of the reasons power co's aren't being setup. It could quite possibly be that Hohm is a marketing creation of BlueLine. I suppose MS Hohm could prove this wrong by simply providing some "transparency" and giving us a full description of their finances/funding/investors/etc.

  • I’m cautiously optimistic.
There was an interesting article on how PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric), a California utility, is refraining from interfacing either with Microsoft Hohm or Google PowerMeter and is instead waiting for the industry to adopt one standard that Microsoft and Google will (have to) support. I think that's a wise decision (utilities letting software companies chase the ball, instead of chasing the software industry ball). However, with the availability of devices that supplant the need for utility support, I have to wonder how quickly the utilities will move... and if Google and/or especially Microsoft still has an incentive to push the utilities to either create a standard or code to Msft's standard.

It all comes down to monetization ('who will pay for this?'). Google doesn't seem to care enough to sink more money into PowerMeter, and Microsoft's original plan of making utilities and advertisers pay doesn't seem feasible in the short term. I think the eventual successful model will be to have the site paid for by advertisers or service providers... and maybe device manufacturers, too (by charging a license fee for every device that can interface to the Hohm partner web service). In order for the advertiser- and partner-supported model to work, Microsoft has to drive a lot of users... millions of hits per day. And, in order to do that they need to quickly add more functionality. I hope that is the plan.

  • ya, I think Hohm, Powermeter, etc are great ideas for consolidating, comparing, etc peoples energy usage, but really, your utility already has all the data (and probably already makes it available to you- just not in a nice usable format). SDG&E recently started adding those little bar graphs to their bills (FINALLY- Puget Sound Energy was doing this 10 years ago when I lived up there!) that show past months usage for a visual; now they just need to expand on that. Utilities can already easily do what Hohm & Powermeter do... although it would be a different story if Hohm & PM provided additional info/services relating to anything/everything else like water usage.

One big benefit I do see with Hohm is that they can maintain a detailed database of the status of every home that has had a "report" completed. Valuable info to govt., real estate weenies, marketing weenies, etc.

My current power provider AmerenCIPS offers me two plans. Tiered flat rate plan and a real time hourly rate plan. I am trying to figure out if I should switch, any way you can get the data for both? Hourly would be better for me and can be found here.
